Image Reconstruction from Bag-of-Visual-Words
The objective of this work is to reconstruct an original image from
Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW). Image reconstruction from features can be a means
of identifying the characteristics of features. Additionally, it enables us to
generate novel images via features. Although BoVW is the de facto standard
feature for image recognition and retrieval, successful image reconstruction
from BoVW has not been reported yet. What complicates this task is that BoVW
lacks the spatial information for including visual words. As described in this
paper, to estimate an original arrangement, we propose an evaluation function
that incorporates the naturalness of local adjacency and the global position,
with a method to obtain related parameters using an external image database. To
evaluate the performance of our method, we reconstruct images of objects of 101
kinds. Additionally, we apply our method to analyze object classifiers and to
generate novel images via BoVW
Semantic Visual Localization
Robust visual localization under a wide range of viewing conditions is a
fundamental problem in computer vision. Handling the difficult cases of this
problem is not only very challenging but also of high practical relevance,
e.g., in the context of life-long localization for augmented reality or
autonomous robots. In this paper, we propose a novel approach based on a joint
3D geometric and semantic understanding of the world, enabling it to succeed
under conditions where previous approaches failed. Our method leverages a novel
generative model for descriptor learning, trained on semantic scene completion
as an auxiliary task. The resulting 3D descriptors are robust to missing
observations by encoding high-level 3D geometric and semantic information.
Experiments on several challenging large-scale localization datasets
demonstrate reliable localization under extreme viewpoint, illumination, and
geometry changes
Data-Driven Shape Analysis and Processing
Data-driven methods play an increasingly important role in discovering
geometric, structural, and semantic relationships between 3D shapes in
collections, and applying this analysis to support intelligent modeling,
editing, and visualization of geometric data. In contrast to traditional
approaches, a key feature of data-driven approaches is that they aggregate
information from a collection of shapes to improve the analysis and processing
of individual shapes. In addition, they are able to learn models that reason
about properties and relationships of shapes without relying on hard-coded
rules or explicitly programmed instructions. We provide an overview of the main
concepts and components of these techniques, and discuss their application to
shape classification, segmentation, matching, reconstruction, modeling and
exploration, as well as scene analysis and synthesis, through reviewing the
literature and relating the existing works with both qualitative and numerical
comparisons. We conclude our report with ideas that can inspire future research
in data-driven shape analysis and processing.Comment: 10 pages, 19 figure
Inner Space Preserving Generative Pose Machine
Image-based generative methods, such as generative adversarial networks
(GANs) have already been able to generate realistic images with much context
control, specially when they are conditioned. However, most successful
frameworks share a common procedure which performs an image-to-image
translation with pose of figures in the image untouched. When the objective is
reposing a figure in an image while preserving the rest of the image, the
state-of-the-art mainly assumes a single rigid body with simple background and
limited pose shift, which can hardly be extended to the images under normal
settings. In this paper, we introduce an image "inner space" preserving model
that assigns an interpretable low-dimensional pose descriptor (LDPD) to an
articulated figure in the image. Figure reposing is then generated by passing
the LDPD and the original image through multi-stage augmented hourglass
networks in a conditional GAN structure, called inner space preserving
generative pose machine (ISP-GPM). We evaluated ISP-GPM on reposing human
figures, which are highly articulated with versatile variations. Test of a
state-of-the-art pose estimator on our reposed dataset gave an accuracy over
80% on PCK0.5 metric. The results also elucidated that our ISP-GPM is able to
preserve the background with high accuracy while reasonably recovering the area
blocked by the figure to be reposed.Comment: http://www.northeastern.edu/ostadabbas/2018/07/23/inner-space-preserving-generative-pose-machine
