    Interval Routing Schemes for Circular-Arc Graphs

    Interval routing is a space efficient method to realize a distributed routing function. In this paper we show that every circular-arc graph allows a shortest path strict 2-interval routing scheme, i.e., by introducing a global order on the vertices and assigning at most two (strict) intervals in this order to the ends of every edge allows to depict a routing function that implies exclusively shortest paths. Since circular-arc graphs do not allow shortest path 1-interval routing schemes in general, the result implies that the class of circular-arc graphs has strict compactness 2, which was a hitherto open question. Additionally, we show that the constructed 2-interval routing scheme is a 1-interval routing scheme with at most one additional interval assigned at each vertex and we an outline algorithm to calculate the routing scheme for circular-arc graphs in O(n^2) time, where n is the number of vertices.Comment: 17 pages, to appear in "International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science

    Polynomial-Time Algorithms for the Longest Induced Path and Induced Disjoint Paths Problems on Graphs of Bounded Mim-Width

    We give the first polynomial-time algorithms on graphs of bounded maximum induced matching width (mim-width) for problems that are not locally checkable. In particular, we give n^O(w)-time algorithms on graphs of mim-width at most w, when given a decomposition, for the following problems: Longest Induced Path, Induced Disjoint Paths and H-Induced Topological Minor for fixed H. Our results imply that the following graph classes have polynomial-time algorithms for these three problems: Interval and Bi-Interval graphs, Circular Arc, Per- mutation and Circular Permutation graphs, Convex graphs, k-Trapezoid, Circular k-Trapezoid, k-Polygon, Dilworth-k and Co-k-Degenerate graphs for fixed k

    Distance Oracles for Interval Graphs via Breadth-First Rank/Select in Succinct Trees

    We present the first succinct distance oracles for (unweighted) interval graphs and related classes of graphs, using a novel succinct data structure for ordinal trees that supports the mapping between preorder (i.e., depth-first) ranks and level-order (breadth-first) ranks of nodes in constant time. Our distance oracles for interval graphs also support navigation queries - testing adjacency, computing node degrees, neighborhoods, and shortest paths - all in optimal time. Our technique also yields optimal distance oracles for proper interval graphs (unit-interval graphs) and circular-arc graphs. Our tree data structure supports all operations provided by different approaches in previous work, as well as mapping to and from level-order ranks and retrieving the last (first) internal node before (after) a given node in a level-order traversal, all in constant time

    Computing and counting longest paths on circular-arc graphs in polynomial time.

    The longest path problem asks for a path with the largest number of vertices in a given graph. The first polynomial time algorithm (with running time O(n4)) has been recently developed for interval graphs. Even though interval and circular-arc graphs look superficially similar, they differ substantially, as circular-arc graphs are not perfect. In this paper, we prove that for every path P of a circular-arc graph G, we can appropriately “cut” the circle, such that the obtained (not induced) interval subgraph G′ of G admits a path P′ on the same vertices as P. This non-trivial result is of independent interest, as it suggests a generic reduction of a number of path problems on circular-arc graphs to the case of interval graphs with a multiplicative linear time overhead of O(n). As an application of this reduction, we present the first polynomial algorithm for the longest path problem on circular-arc graphs, which turns out to have the same running time O(n4) with the one on interval graphs, as we manage to get rid of the linear overhead of the reduction. This algorithm computes in the same time an n-approximation of the number of different vertex sets that provide a longest path; in the case where G is an interval graph, we compute the exact number. Moreover, our algorithm can be directly extended with the same running time to the case where every vertex has an arbitrary positive weight

    On the bend number of circular-arc graphs as edge intersection graphs of paths on a grid

    Golumbic, Lipshteyn and Stern \cite{Golumbic-epg} proved that every graph can be represented as the edge intersection graph of paths on a grid (EPG graph), i.e., one can associate with each vertex of the graph a nontrivial path on a rectangular grid such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding paths share at least one edge of the grid. For a nonnegative integer kk, BkB_k-EPG graphs are defined as EPG graphs admitting a model in which each path has at most kk bends. Circular-arc graphs are intersection graphs of open arcs of a circle. It is easy to see that every circular-arc graph is a B4B_4-EPG graph, by embedding the circle into a rectangle of the grid. In this paper, we prove that every circular-arc graph is B3B_3-EPG, and that there exist circular-arc graphs which are not B2B_2-EPG. If we restrict ourselves to rectangular representations (i.e., the union of the paths used in the model is contained in a rectangle of the grid), we obtain EPR (edge intersection of path in a rectangle) representations. We may define BkB_k-EPR graphs, k≥0k\geq 0, the same way as BkB_k-EPG graphs. Circular-arc graphs are clearly B4B_4-EPR graphs and we will show that there exist circular-arc graphs that are not B3B_3-EPR graphs. We also show that normal circular-arc graphs are B2B_2-EPR graphs and that there exist normal circular-arc graphs that are not B1B_1-EPR graphs. Finally, we characterize B1B_1-EPR graphs by a family of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs, and show that they form a subclass of normal Helly circular-arc graphs

    Intersection of Longest Paths in Graph Theory and Predicting Performance in Facial Recognition

    A set of subsets is said to have the Helly property if the condition that each pair of subsets has a non-empty intersection implies that the intersection of all subsets has a non-empty intersection. In 1966, Gallai noticed that the set of all longest paths of a connected graph is pairwise intersecting and asked if the set had the Helly property. While it is not true in general, a number of classes of graphs have been shown to have the property. In this dissertation, we show that K4-minor-free graphs, interval graphs, circular arc graphs, and the intersection graphs of spider graphs are classes that have this property. The accuracy of facial recognition algorithms on images taken in controlled conditions has improved significantly over the last two decades. As the focus is turning to more unconstrained or relaxed conditions and toward videos, there is a need to better understand what factors influence performance. If these factors were better understood, it would be easier to predict how well an algorithm will perform when new conditions are introduced. Previous studies have studied the effect of various factors on the verification rate (VR), but less attention has been paid to the false accept rate (FAR). In this dissertation, we study the effect various factors have on the FAR as well as the correlation between marginal FAR and VR. Using these relationships, we propose two models to predict marginal VR and demonstrate that the models predict better than using the previous global VR
