    Exploring the use of mobile sensors for noise and black carbon measurements in an urban environment

    Mobile measurements have been collected on a bicycle equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) in a few connecting streets in Gent (Belgium). The 1-s sound pressure levels and 1-s black carbon concentrations were measured. In addition, 5 continuous monitoring fixed stations connected to building facades were used. Different processing methods are compared, based on different temporal and spatial weighting aggregations. The possibility to take profit of the fixed stations to refine estimations is tested, according to the noise levels collected at fixed stations and the distance between mobile and fixed sensors. In a last step, route selection based on travel distance, noise levels and black-carbon measurements is explored based on the data obtained

    This chapter1 discusses the interconnection architecture of the Mobile Digital Companion. The approach to build a low-power handheld multimedia computer presented here is to have autonomous, reconfigurable modules such as network, video and audio devices, interconnected by a switch rather than by a bus, and to offload as much as work as possible from the CPU to programmable modules placed in the data streams. Thus, communication between components is not broadcast over a bus but delivered exactly where it is needed, work is carried out where the data passes through, bypassing the memory. The amount of buffering is minimised, and if it is required at all, it is placed right on the data path, where it is needed. A reconfigurable internal communication network switch called Octopus exploits locality of reference and eliminates wasteful data copies. The switch is implemented as a simplified ATM switch and provides Quality of Service guarantees and enough bandwidth for multimedia applications. We have built a testbed of the architecture, of which we will present performance and energy consumption characteristics

    A Switch Architecture for Real-Time Multimedia Communications

    In this paper we present a switch that can be used to transfer multimedia type of trafJic. The switch provides a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a prototype Switching Element using the new technology opportunities being offered today. The architecture meets the multimedia requirements but still has a low complexity and needs a minimum amount of hardware. A main item of this paper will be the background of the architectural design decisions made. These include the interconnection topology, buffer organization, routing and scheduling. The implementation of the switching fabric with FPGAs, allows us to experiment with switching mode, routing strategy and scheduling policy in a multimedia environment. The witching elements are interconnected in a Kautz topology. Kautz graphs have interesting properties such as: a small diametec the degree is independent of the network size, the network is fault-tolerant and has a simple routing algorithm

    Wireless ATM layouts for chain networks

    In this paper we consider the problem of constructing ATM layouts for wireless networks in which mobile users can move along a chain of base stations. We first show that deciding the existence of a layout with maximum hop count h, load l and channel distance d is NP-complete for every fixed value of d greater or equal to 1. We then provide optimal layout constructions for the case d less than or equal to 2. Finally, optimal layout constructions are obtained also for any d within the class of the so-called canonic layouts, that so far have always been shown to be the optimal ones

    Frame Relay (FR) represents an important paradigm shift in modern telecommunication. This technology is beginning to evolve from data only application to broad spectrum of multimedia users and potential to provide end users with cost effective transport of voice traffic for intra office communication. In this project the recent development in voice communication over Frame relay is investigated. Simulations were carried out using OPNET, a powerful simulation software. Following the simulation model, a practical design of the LAN-to-LAN connectivity experiment was also done in the Net Lab. From the results of the simulation, Performance measures such as delay, jitter, and throughput are reported. It is evident from the results that real-time voice or video across a frame relay network can provide acceptable performance

    A method for path allocation for use with three-stage ATM switches that feature multiple channels between the switch modules in adjacent stages is described. The method is suited to hardware implementation using parallelism to achieve a very short execution time. This allows path allocation to be performed anew in each time slot.     The Optimal Virtual Path Design of ATM Networks

    This paper studies the optimal configuration of virtual paths in ATM networks. A linear model that minimizes the maximum flow density of links is proposed for the optimal virtual path configuration. The advantage of the modeling is that traffic loads are distributed evenly over entire network. An algorithm based on the multi-commodity approach is proposed to solve the problem. Examples are given to show that this algorithm solves the optimal VP assignment problem very quickly and efficiently. Since only single source-destination linear programming subproblems need to be solved in our approach, this algorithm can be applied to large-scale networks.published_or_final_versio
