Interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based non-linear observer control for efficiency maximization of permanent magnet synchronous motor

The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has several advantages over the DC motor and is gradually replacing it in the industry. The dynamics of the PMSM are described by non-linear equations; it is sensitive to unknown external disturbances (load), and its characteristics vary over time. All of these restrictions complicate the control task. Non-linear controls are required to adjust for non-linearities and the drawbacks mentioned above. This paper investigates an interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) passivity-based control (PBC) combined with a non-linear observer approach for the PMSM using the model represented in the dq-frame. The IDA-PBC approach has the inherent benefit of not canceling non-linear features but compensating them in a damped manner. The suggested PBC is in charge of creating the intended dynamic of the system, while the non-linear observer is in charge of reconstructing the recorded signals in order to compel the PMSM to track speed. The primary objective of this study is to synthesize the controller while accounting for the whole dynamic of the PMSM and making the system passive. It is performed by restructuring the energy of the proposed strategy and introducing a damping component that addresses the non-linear elements in a damped instead of deleted way, so providing a duality concept between both the IDA-PBC and the observer There are three methods for computing IDA-PBC: parametric, nonparametric, and algebraic. The parameterized IDA-PBC method is used to control the speed of the PMSM. This method uses the energy function in parameterized closed-loop in terms of some functions depending on the system’s state vector, such that the energy formation step is satisfied. Then, the original port-controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) dynamics in open-loop (OL) are equalized with the desired one in closed-loop (CL). The equalization process allows obtaining a set of solutions of the partial differential equations. The latter must be solved in terms of the parameters of the energy function of the closed-loop. Finally, the stability properties are studied using the Lyapunov theory. Generally, the proposed candidate offers high robustness, fast speed convergence, and high efficiency over the conventional benchmark strategies. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is performed under extensive numerical investigation with MATLAB/Simulink software

Disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation techniques in PMSM drives–a survey

    Get PDF
This paper gives a comprehensive overview on disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) techniques in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. Various disturbances and uncertainties in PMSM and also other alternating current (AC) motor drives are first reviewed which shows they have different behaviors and appear in different control loops of the system. The existing DUEA and other relevant control methods in handling disturbances and uncertainties widely used in PMSM drives, and their latest developments are then discussed and summarized. It also provides in-depth analysis of the relationship between these advanced control methods in the context of PMSM systems. When dealing with uncertainties,it is shown that DUEA has a different but complementary mechanism to widely used robust control and adaptive control. The similarities and differences in disturbance attenuation of DUEA and other promising methods such as internal model control and output regulation theory have been analyzed in detail. The wide applications of these methods in different AC motor drives (in particular in PMSM drives) are categorized and summarized. Finally the paper ends with the discussion on future directions in this area

Fast Adaptive Robust Differentiator Based Robust-Adaptive Control of Grid-Tied Inverters with a New L Filter Design Method

In this research, a new nonlinear and adaptive state feedback controller with a fast-adaptive robust differentiator is presented for grid-tied inverters. All parameters and external disturbances are taken as uncertain in the design of the proposed controller without the disadvantages of singularity and over-parameterization. A robust differentiator based on the second order sliding mode is also developed with a fast-adaptive structure to be able to consider the time derivative of the virtual control input. Unlike the conventional backstepping, the proposed differentiator overcomes the problem of explosion of complexity. In the closed-loop control system, the three phase source currents and direct current (DC) bus voltage are assumed to be available for feedback. Using the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proven that the overall control system has the global asymptotic stability. In addition, a new simple L filter design method based on the total harmonic distortion approach is also proposed. Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed controller assurances drive the tracking errors to zero with better performance, and it is robust against all uncertainties. Moreover, the proposed L filter design method matches the total harmonic distortion (THD) aim in the design with the experimental result

Within the field of electrical drive systems, there has been increasing popularity in the use of permanent magnetic synchronous machines as an execution unit, and the cooperation with high performance control strategy. Industrial engineers and researchers have developed countless applications with PM motors such as wind energy, hybrid vehicle and even in the elevator field. PMSM is a multivariate, nonlinear, time-varying system. Its entire operation is influenced by parameter variation, external load disturbance and unmodelled uncertainty. To eliminate such negative impacts and develop better performing PMSM control system, advanced control algorithms are critical. Therefore, this thesis forces on developing two different control techniques such as mixed-sensitivity based H∞ controller and port controlled Hamilton with dissipation (PCHD) controller to handle the uncertainties of the drives. Former one establishes the controller in terms of frequency domain, successfully converted IPMSM control problem to a standard H∞ based mixed-sensitivity problem by selecting proper weight functions and solving its correspond Ricatti equations. While the latter one realizes the control objective in energy aspects by assigning interconnection and damping matrix for IPMSM system to prove its passivity and ensure global stability. The performances of both controllers for IPMSM drive have been investigated in both simulations and experiments using MATLAB-Simulink and dSPACE DSP board DS1104 for a 5 hp prototype motor. A direct current (DC) machine is coupled with IPMSM shaft to use as dynamic load. It is found that the performances of both controllers are robust at different operating conditions while PCHD exhibits better dynamic performance than that of H∞ control

Nonlinear adaptive speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor: A perturbation estimation approach

    Get PDF
This paper presents a nonlinear adaptive control (NAC) scheme for the speed regulation of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on perturbation estimation and feedback linearizing control. All PMSM system’s unknown nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances including unknown time-varying load torque disturbance, are defined as lumped perturbation terms, which are estimated by designing perturbation observers. The estimates are used to adaptively compensate the real perturbations and achieve adaptive feedback linearizing control of the original nonlinear system. The proposed control scheme does not require accurate system model and full state feedback. Stability of the close-loop system with proposed NAC is investigated via Lyapunov theory, and the effectiveness of proposed NAC scheme is verified through both simulation and experimental studies. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed NAC scheme can provide less regulation error in speed tracking, better dynamic performance and robustness against parameter uncertainties and load torque disturbance, compared with conventional vector control and load torque estimated based control

Velocity-sensorless tracking control and identification of switched-reluctance motors

International audienceWe present a solution to the speed sensorless control problem for switched-reluctance motors under parametric uncertainty. Our main results guarantee velocity tracking control for velocity references with constant reference acceleration under the assumption that the load torque, the rotor inertia, the resistance and inductances are unknown. Under a persistency of excitation condition on a function which depends only on reference trajectories, we guarantee uniform global asymptotic stability therefore, we establish conditions for the identification of the physical parameters of the system. Our theoretical findings are supported by illustrative simulation results

Multirate input based quasi-sliding mode control for permanent magnet synchronous motor

    Get PDF
Permanent magnet synchronous motor field oriented control system often uses dual-loop (speed and current) cascade structure, and the dynamics speeds of the two loops mismatch. The motor’s mechanical and electrical subsystems have the typical multirate characteristics. Based on the multirate control theory, this paper proposes multirate input quasi-sliding mode algorithm for the speed control loop. Under the situation of the output data loss, the proposed algorithm builds the extended input vector with the output prediction information. Due to the extended input vector, the proposed algorithm reduces the system steady state chatterring, and then improves the performance of the whole system. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm
