    Fault-tolerant control of electric vehicles with in-wheel motors using actuator-grouping sliding mode controllers

    Although electric vehicles with in-wheel motors have been regarded as one of the promising vehicle architectures in recent years, the probability of in-wheel motor fault is still a crucial issue due to the system complexity and large number of control actuators. In this study, a modified sliding mode control (SMC) is applied to achieve fault-tolerant control of electric vehicles with four-wheel-independent-steering (4WIS) and four-wheel-independent-driving (4WID). Unlike in traditional SMC, in this approach the steering geometry is re-arranged according to the location of faulty wheels in the modified SMC. Three SMC control laws for longitudinal velocity control, lateral velocity control and yaw rate control are designed based on specific vehicle motion scenarios. In addition the actuator-grouping SMC method is proposed so that driving actuators are grouped and each group of actuators can be used to achieve the specific control target, which avoids the strong coupling effect between each control target. Simulation results prove that the proposed modified SMC can achieve good vehicle dynamics control performance in normal driving and large steering angle turning scenarios. In addition, the proposed actuator-grouping SMC can solve the coupling effect of different control targets and the control performance is improved

    Fault tolerant control of multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles using sliding mode based schemes

    This thesis investigates fault-tolerant control (FTC) for the specific application of small multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)s). The fault-tolerant controllers in this thesis are based on the combination of sliding mode control with control allocation where the control signals are distributed based on motors' health level. This alleviates the need to reconfigure the overall structure of the controllers. The thesis considered both the over actuated (sufficient redundancy) and under-actuated UAVs. Three multirotor UAVs have been considered in this thesis which includes a quadrotor (4 rotors), an Octocopter (8 rotors) and a spherical UAV. The non-linear mathematical models for each of the UAVs are presented. One of the main contributions of this thesis is the hardware implementation of the sliding mode Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) scheme on an open-source autopilot microcontroller called Pixhawk for a quadrotor UAV. The controller was developed in Simulink and implemented on the microcontroller using the Matlab/Simulink support packages. A gimbal- based test rig was developed and built to offer a safe test bed for testing control designs. Actual flight tests were done which showed sound responses during fault-free and faulty scenarios. This work represents one of successful implementation work of sliding mode FTC in the literature. Another key contribution of this thesis is the development of the mathematical model of a unique spherical UAV with highly redundant control inputs. The use of novel 8 flaps and 2 rotors configuration of the spherical UAV considered in this thesis provides a unique fault tolerant capability, especially when combined with the sliding mode-based FTC scheme. A key development in the later chapters of the thesis considers fault-tolerant control strategy when no redundancy is available. Unlike many works which consider FTC on quadrotors in the literature (which can only handle faults), the proposed schemes in the later chapters also include cases when failures also occur converting the system to an under actuated system. In one chapter, a bespoke Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) based controller is developed for a reduced attitude dynamics system by exploiting non-standard equation of motions which relates to position acceleration and load factor dynamics. This is unique as compared to the typical Euler angle control (roll, pitch and yaw angle control). In the last chapter, a fault-tolerant control scheme which can handle both the over and under actuated system is presented. The scheme considers an octocopter and can be used in fault-free, faulty and failure conditions up to two remaining motors. The scheme exploits the differential flatness property, another unique property of multirotor UAVs. This allows both inner loop and outer loop controller to be designed using sliding mode (as opposed to many sliding mode FTC in the literature, which only considers sliding mode for the inner loop control)

    Fault-Tolerant Control For A Remotely Operated Vehicle (Rov) Propulsion System

    Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) propulsions system is frequently exposed to harsh operating and underwater environments. Faults and undesired working conditions contribute to performance degradation thus repair actions are required. Stop of operation causes operational cost to increase. Therefore, a Fault-Tolerant Control System (FTCS) is introduced to deal with this situation. This method aims to ensure reliability, sustainability and safety of a dynamical system. This thesis presents a fault-tolerant control specifically designed for ROV electric propulsion system with brushed DC motor thrusters. There are two components in FTCS which are the Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) and Controller Re-Design (CRD). The FDD is done by monitoring two thruster parameters i.e. armature voltage and current load and compare between actual and reference process parameters. Via statistical design of experiment techniques, an offline experiment is performed to simulate possible event of faults. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods such as two-factor factorial design and Tukey’s Kramer rule are used to analyze the faults and provides the reference model to implement the controller re-design i.e. fault accommodation. A Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system is used to design the fault accommodation and ROV motion controller. The FTCS method has been tested in fresh water pool and proved to be fast in handling the thruster faults. It takes about 500 ms for a fault in a single thruster to be detected, isolated and new thruster command to be initiated. The FTCS method causes the ROV degree of freedom (DOF) to be reduced to a minimum but the ROV still able to continue the operation

    Active suspension control of electric vehicle with in-wheel motors

    In-wheel motor (IWM) technology has attracted increasing research interests in recent years due to the numerous advantages it offers. However, the direct attachment of IWMs to the wheels can result in an increase in the vehicle unsprung mass and a significant drop in the suspension ride comfort performance and road holding stability. Other issues such as motor bearing wear motor vibration, air-gap eccentricity and residual unbalanced radial force can adversely influence the motor vibration, passenger comfort and vehicle rollover stability. Active suspension and optimized passive suspension are possible methods deployed to improve the ride comfort and safety of electric vehicles equipped with inwheel motor. The trade-off between ride comfort and handling stability is a major challenge in active suspension design. This thesis investigates the development of novel active suspension systems for successful implementation of IWM technology in electric cars. Towards such aim, several active suspension methods based on robust H∞ control methods are developed to achieve enhanced suspension performance by overcoming the conflicting requirement between ride comfort, suspension deflection and road holding. A novel fault-tolerant H∞ controller based on friction compensation is in the presence of system parameter uncertainties, actuator faults, as well as actuator time delay and system friction is proposed. A friction observer-based Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy H∞ controller is developed for active suspension with sprung mass variation and system friction. This method is validated experimentally on a quarter car test rig. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed control methods in improving vehicle ride performance and road holding capability under different road profiles. Quarter car suspension model with suspended shaft-less direct-drive motors has the potential to improve the road holding capability and ride performance. Based on the quarter car suspension with dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) model, a multi-objective parameter optimization for active suspension of IWM mounted electric vehicle based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to suppress the sprung mass vibration, motor vibration, motor bearing wear as well as improving ride comfort, suspension deflection and road holding stability. Then a fault-tolerant fuzzy H∞ control design approach for active suspension of IWM driven electric vehicles in the presence of sprung mass variation, actuator faults and control input constraints is proposed. The T-S fuzzy suspension model is used to cope with the possible sprung mass variation. The output feedback control problem for active suspension system of IWM driven electric vehicles with actuator faults and time delay is further investigated. The suspended motor parameters and vehicle suspension parameters are optimized based on the particle swarm optimization. A robust output feedback H∞ controller is designed to guarantee the system’s asymptotic stability and simultaneously satisfying the performance constraints. The proposed output feedback controller reveals much better performance than previous work when different actuator thrust losses and time delay occurs. The road surface roughness is coupled with in-wheel switched reluctance motor air-gap eccentricity and the unbalanced residual vertical force. Coupling effects between road excitation and in wheel switched reluctance motor (SRM) on electric vehicle ride comfort are also analysed in this thesis. A hybrid control method including output feedback controller and SRM controller are designed to suppress SRM vibration and to prolong the SRM lifespan, while at the same time improving vehicle ride comfort. Then a state feedback H∞ controller combined with SRM controller is designed for in-wheel SRM driven electric vehicle with DVA structure to enhance vehicle and SRM performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of DVA structure based active suspension system with proposed control method its ability to significantly improve the road holding capability and ride performance, as well as motor performance

    Fault Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    With the increasing demand for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in both military and civilian applications, critical safety issues need to be specially considered in order to make better and wider use of them. UAVs are usually employed to work in hazardous and complex environments, which may seriously threaten the safety and reliability of UAVs. Therefore, the safety and reliability of UAVs are becoming imperative for development of advanced intelligent control systems. The key challenge now is the lack of fully autonomous and reliable control techniques in face of different operation conditions and sophisticated environments. Further development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) control systems is required to be reliable in the presence of system component faults and to be insensitive to model uncertainties and external environmental disturbances. This thesis research aims to design and develop novel control schemes for UAVs with consideration of all the factors that may threaten their safety and reliability. A novel adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) strategy is proposed to accommodate model uncertainties and actuator faults for an unmanned quadrotor helicopter. Compared with the existing adaptive SMC strategies in the literature, the proposed adaptive scheme can tolerate larger actuator faults without stimulating control chattering due to the use of adaptation parameters in both continuous and discontinuous control parts. Furthermore, a fuzzy logic-based boundary layer and a nonlinear disturbance observer are synthesized to further improve the capability of the designed control scheme for tolerating model uncertainties, actuator faults, and unknown external disturbances while preventing overestimation of the adaptive control parameters and suppressing the control chattering effect. Then, a cost-effective fault estimation scheme with a parallel bank of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) is proposed to accurately estimate actuator fault magnitude and an active fault-tolerant control (FTC) framework is established for a closed-loop quadrotor helicopter system. Finally, a reconfigurable control allocation approach is combined with adaptive SMC to achieve the capability of tolerating complete actuator failures with application to a modified octorotor helicopter. The significance of this proposed control scheme is that the stability of the closed-loop system is theoretically guaranteed in the presence of both single and simultaneous actuator faults

    Fault-tolerant scheme for robotic manipulator -Nonlinear robust back-stepping control with friction compensation

    Emerging applications of autonomous robots requiring stability and reliability cannot afford component failure to achieve operational objectives. Hence, identification and countermeasure of a fault is of utmost importance in mechatronics community. This research proposes a Fault-tolerant control (FTC) for a robot manipulator, which is based on a hybrid control scheme that uses an observer as well as a hardware redundancy strategy to improve the performance and efficiency in the presence of actuator and sensor faults. Considering a five Degree of Freedom (DoF) robotic manipulator, a dynamic LuGre friction model is derived which forms the basis for design of control law. For actuator's and sensor's FTC, an adaptive back-stepping methodology is used for fault estimation and the nominal control law is used for the controller reconfiguration and observer is designed. Fault detection is accomplished by comparing the actual and observed states, pursued by fault tolerant method using redundant sensors. The results affirm the effectiveness of the proposed FTC strategy with model-based friction compensation. Improved tracking performance as well robustness in the presence of friction and fault demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed control approach

    Yaw Rate Control and Actuator Fault Detection and Isolation for a Four Wheel Independent Drive Electric Vehicle

    In this paper, a new actuator fault detection and isolation method for a four wheel independent drive electric vehicle is proposed. Also, a controller based on sliding mode control method is proposed for lateral stability of the vehicle. The proposed control method is designed in three high, medium and low levels. At the high-level, the vehicle desired dynamics such as longitudinal speed reference and yaw rate reference are determined. The medium-level is designed to achieve desired traction force and yaw moment based on the sliding mode control. At the low-level, by defining and optimally minimizing a cost function, proper force or torque signals are determined to apply to the wheels. Moreover, this paper also presents a new method for actuator fault detection and isolation in electric vehicles. The proposed fault detection method uses comparison of sliding ratio of different wheels. Using the proposed method, value of the actuator fault and its position are accurately estimated and diagnosed. Then, the proposed controller is modified and adapted to new conditions using the fault identification results. Finally, the validity of proposed controller is confirmed by the conducted simulations in MATLAB and CARSIM environments

    An Overview of Legged Robots

    The objective of this paper is to present the evolution and the state-of-theart in the area of legged locomotion systems. In a first phase different possibilities for mobile robots are discussed, namely the case of artificial legged locomotion systems, while emphasizing their advantages and limitations. In a second phase an historical overview of the evolution of these systems is presented, bearing in mind several particular cases often considered as milestones on the technological and scientific progress. After this historical timeline, some of the present day systems are examined and their performance is analyzed. In a third phase are pointed out the major areas for research and development that are presently being followed in the construction of legged robots. Finally, some of the problems still unsolved, that remain defying robotics research, are also addressed.N/
