    Vehicular ad hoc networks are new and emerging technology and special class of mobile ad hoc networks that provide wireless communication between vehicles without any fixed infrastructure. Geographical routing has appeared as one of the most scalable and competent routing schemes for vehicular networks. A number of strategies have been proposed for forwarding the packets in geographical direction of the destination, where information of direct neighbors is gained through navigational services. Due to dynamically changing topologies and high mobility neighbor information become outdated. To address these common issues in network different types of forwarding strategies have been proposed.     Routing protocol for V2X communications for Urban VANETs

    Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) have been attracting tremendous attention in both academia and industry due to emerging applications that pave the way towards safer enjoyable journeys and inclusive digital partnerships. Undoubtedly, these ITS applications will demand robust routing protocols that not only focus on Inter-Vehicle Communications but also on providing fast, reliable, and secure access to the infrastructure. This thesis aims mainly to introduce the challenges of data packets routing through urban environment using the help of infrastructure. Broadcasting transmission is an essential operational technique that serves a broad range of applications which demand different restrictive QoS provisioning levels. Although broadcast communication has been investigated widely in highway vehicular networks, it is undoubtedly still a challenge in the urban environment due to the obstacles, such as high buildings. In this thesis, the Road-Topology based Broadcast Protocol (RTBP) is proposed, a distance and contention-based forwarding scheme suitable for both urban and highway vehicular environments. RTBP aims at assigning the highest forwarding priority to a vehicle, called a mobile repeater, having the greatest capability to send the packet in multiple directions. In this way, RTBP effectively reduces the number of competing vehicles and minimises the number of hops required to retransmit the broadcast packets around the intersections to cover the targeted area. By investigating the RTBP under realistic urban scenarios against well-known broadcast protocols, eMDR and TAF, that are dedicated to retransmitting the packets around intersections, the results showed the superiority of the RTBP in delivering the most critical warning information for 90% of vehicles with significantly lower delay of 58% and 70% compared to eMDR and TAF. The validation of this performance was clear when the increase in the number of vehicles. Secondly, a Fast and Reliable Hybrid routing (FRHR) protocol is introduced for efficient infrastructure access which is capable of handling efficient vehicle to vehicle communications. Interface to infrastructure is provided by carefully placed RoadSide Units (RSUs) which broadcast beacons in a multi-hop fashion in constrained areas. This enables vehicles proactively to maintain fresh minimum-delay routes to other RSUs while reactively discovering routes to nearby vehicles. The proposed protocol utilizes RSUs connected to the wired backbone network to relay packets toward remote vehicles. A vehicle selects an RSU to register with according to the expected mean delay instead of the device’s remoteness. The FRHR performance is evaluated against established infrastructure routing protocols, Trafroute, IGSR and RBVT-R that are dedicated to for urban environment, the results showed an improvement of 20% to 33% in terms of packet delivery ratio and lower latency particularly in sparse networks due to its rapid response to changes in network connectivity. Thirdly, focusing on increasing FRHR’s capability to provide more stable and durable routes to support the QoS requirements of expected wide-range ITS applications on the urban environment, a new route selection mechanism is introduced, aiming at selecting highly connected crossroads. The new protocol is called, Stable Infrastructure Routing Protocol (SIRP). Intensive simulation results showed that SIRP offers low end-to-end delay and high delivery ratio with varying traffic density, while resolving the problem of frequent link failures

    Design and Performance Analysis of an Aeronautical Routing Protocol with Ground Station Updates

    Aeronautical routing protocol (AeroRP) is a position-based routing protocol developed for highly dynamic airborne networks. It works in conjunction with the aeronautical network protocol (AeroNP). AeroRP is a multi-modal protocol that operates in different modes depending on the mission requirements. Ground station (GS) update mode is an AeroRP mode in which the GS sends geolocation or topology updates to improve routing accuracy. The main contribution of this thesis is to develop and implement the GS updates in AeroRP and analyse its performance in the various modes and compare them against canonical MANET routing protocols such as DSDV, OLSR, AODV, and DSR. The simulation analysis shows that AeroRP outperforms the traditional MANET protocols in various scenarios

    A Learning-based Approach to Exploiting Sensing Diversity in Performance Critical Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks for human health monitoring, military surveillance, and disaster warning all have stringent accuracy requirements for detecting and classifying events while maximizing system lifetime. to meet high accuracy requirements and maximize system lifetime, we must address sensing diversity: sensing capability differences among both heterogeneous and homogeneous sensors in a specific deployment. Existing approaches either ignore sensing diversity entirely and assume all sensors have similar capabilities or attempt to overcome sensing diversity through calibration. Instead, we use machine learning to take advantage of sensing differences among heterogeneous sensors to provide high accuracy and energy savings for performance critical applications.;In this dissertation, we provide five major contributions that exploit the nuances of specific sensor deployments to increase application performance. First, we demonstrate that by using machine learning for event detection, we can explore the sensing capability of a specific deployment and use only the most capable sensors to meet user accuracy requirements. Second, we expand our diversity exploiting approach to detect multiple events using a distributed manner. Third, we address sensing diversity in body sensor networks, providing a practical, user friendly solution for activity recognition. Fourth, we further increase accuracy and energy savings in body sensor networks by sharing sensing resources among neighboring body sensor networks. Lastly, we provide a learning-based approach for forwarding event detection decisions to data sinks in an environment with mobile sensor nodes

    Position-Based Multicast for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks

    In general, routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) can be classified into topology-based protocols and position-based protocols. While for unicast routing many proposals for both classes exist, the existing approaches to multicast routing basically implement topology-based algorithms and only a few of them make use of the geographic positions of the network nodes. These have in common that the sending node has to precalculate the multicast tree over which the packets are distributed and store it in each packet header. This involves two main issues: (a) These approaches are not very flexible with regard to topological changes which abandons the advantages that position-based routing has against topology-based routing, and (b) they do not scale with the number of receivers, since every one of them has to be named in the packet header. This thesis solves these issues and further advances position-based multicast routing. Position-Based Multicast (PBM) enhances the flexibility of position-based multicast routing by following the forwarding principle of position-based unicast routing. It transfers the choice of the next hops in the tree from the sender to the forwarding nodes. Based on the positions of their neighboring nodes, these are able to determine the most suitable next hop(s) at the moment when the packet is being forwarded. The scalability with respect to the number of receiving nodes in a group is solved by Scalable Position-Based Multicast (SPBM). It includes a membership management fulfilling different tasks at once. First, it administers group memberships in order to provide multicast sources with information on whether nodes are subscribed to a specific group. Second, it implements a location service providing the multicast sources with the positions of the subscribed receiver nodes. And third, it geographically aggregates membership data in order to achieve the desired scalability. The group management features two modes of operation: The proactive variant produces a bounded overhead scaling well with the size of the network. The reactive alternative, in contrast, reaches low worst-case join delays but does not limit the overhead. Contention-Based Multicast Forwarding (CBMF) addresses the problems that appear in highly mobile networks induced by outdated position information. Instead of basing forwarding decisions on a perception that may no longer be up to date, the packets are addressed only to the final destination; no explicit next hops are specified. The receiving nodes, which are candidate next hops, then decide by means of contention which of them are the most suitable next hop(s) for a packet. Not only is the decision made based on the most currently available data, but this procedure also saves the regular sending of beacon messages, thus reducing the overhead. The lack of multicast congestion control is another unsolved problem obstructing high-bandwidth data transmission. Sending out more and more packets to a multicast group lets the performance decrease. Backpressure Multicast Congestion Control (BMCC) takes care that the network does not need to handle more packets than it is able to. It achieves this by limiting the packet queues on the intermediate hops. A forwarder may not forward the next packet of a stream before it has noticed---by overhearing the transmission of the next hop---that the previous packet has succeeded. If there is congestion in an area, backpressure is implicitly built up towards the source, which then stops sending out packets until the congestion is released. BMCC takes care that every receiving node will receive packets at the same rate. An alternative mode of operation, BMCC with Backpressure Pruning (BMCC-BP) allows the cutting of congested branches for single packets, permitting a higher rate for uncongested receivers. Besides presenting protocols for multicast communication in MANETs, this thesis also describes implementations of two of the above-mentioned protocols. The first one is an implementation of SPBM for the Linux kernel that allows IP applications to send data via UDP to a group of receivers in an ad-hoc network. The implementation resides between the MAC layer and the network/IP layer of the network stack. It is compatible with unmodified standard kernels of versions 2.4 and 2.6, and may be compiled for x86 or ARM processor architectures. The second implementation is an implementation of CBMF for the ScatterWeb MSB430 sensor nodes. Due to their low-level programmability they allow an integration of the routing protocol with the medium access control. The absence of periodic beacon messages makes the protocol especially suitable for energy-constrained sensor networks. Furthermore, other constraints like limited memory and computational power demand special consideration as well

    Position-Based Packet Forwarding for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

    Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, or MANETs, are data communication networks between (potentially) mobile computer systems equipped with wireless communication devices and — in their purest form — in complete absence of communication infrastructure. Usage scenarios for these systems include communication during disaster recovery or battlefield communications. One of the great research challenges concerning MANETs is the Packet Forwarding Problem, i.e., the question to which neighbor node a data packet should be handed over to reach non-neighboring nodes. While this problem has been previously solved by the adaption of classic routing algorithms from wired networks, the availability of GPS enables to include information about the geographic position of nodes into the routing decision, by selecting forwarders that are geographically closest to the destination. While these algorithms have been shown to improve communication performance in networks with a high degree of node mobility, they require (a) a beaconing service that allows every node to build a table of its neighbors and (b) a so-called Location Service that allows to acquire the current position of non-neighboring nodes in the network. In this thesis, we propose Contention-Based Forwarding (or CBF), a greedy routing heuristic that is no longer in need of a beaconing service. Moreover, a forwarding node running CBF does not at all select the next forwarder explicitly but broadcasts the packet containing its own position and the position of the destination. The selection of the forwarding is now done in a contention period, where every possible forwarder, i.e., every receiver of the packet, considers its own suitability to forward by calculating the geographical progress for the packet if forwarded by itself. Then it waits for a time reciprocal to this suitability before simply retransmitting. If the retransmission of a packet is overheard, the own postponed retransmission process is canceled. In this thesis, we demonstrate that CBF outperforms beacon and position-based routing by delivering packets with constant overhead, almost ignorant of mobility. Also, we introduce two strategies to cope with the problem of packet duplication. A problem left open by greedy routing heuristics is routing in the presence of local optima, or voids. Voids are node placement situations, where — in spite of an existing route — no neighboring node is geographically closer to the destination than the current forwarder. In these situations, greedy forwarding fails and standard graph-based recovery well known from classical Position-Based Forwarding cannot be applied due to the lack of the beacon-based construction of neighbor tables. As a solution, we propagate Contention-Based Distance Vector Routing, a contention-based adaption of AODV that acquires topology information in the area of the void and does contention on the topological distance to the forwarder. Besides the forwarding algorithms, we extend position-based routing by two location services. The first, the Reactive Location Service or RLS is simple, purely on-demand and very robust to mobility, the second Hierarchical Location Service, is more complex but outperforms RLS in scalability. The second big column in this thesis is ad-hoc multi-hop communication in the context of Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks , or VANET, i.e., networks where the communication system is carried by vehicles. These systems very elegantly fit into the propositions and requirements for our more general routing approaches since they have (a) easy access to position information an (b) "suffer" from high mobility. For VANETs, we separate the routing problem into highway and city scenarios and study various routing algorithms in both. In the end, we advocate the usage of position-based routing in both scenarios; moreover, the contention-based approaches are most promising. While a lot of ad-hoc research has been deemed to be theoretical, we have also built a multi-car communication system. For this system, we provided the network and system architecture and provided the communication software. In this thesis, we will describe these efforts as a proof-of-concept and provide measurement results

    Protocoles de routage sans connaissance de voisinage pour réseaux radio multi-sauts

    L'efficacité énergétique constitue l'objectif clef pour la conception des protocoles de communication pour des réseaux de capteurs radio multi-sauts. Beaucoup d'efforts ont été réalisés à différents niveaux de la pile protocolaire à travers des algorithmes d'agrégation spatiale et temporelle des données, des protocoles de routage efficaces en énergie, et des couches d'accès au médium avec des mécanismes d'ordonnancement permettant de mettre la radio en état d'endormissement afin d'économiser l'énergie. Pour autant, ces protocoles utilisent de façon importante des paquets de contrôle et de découverte du voisinage qui sont coûteux en énergie. En outre, cela se fait très souvent sans aucune interaction entre les différentes couches de la pile. Ces travaux de thèse s'intéressent donc particulièrement à la problématique de l'énergie des réseaux de capteurs à travers des protocoles de routage et d'accès au médium. Les contributions de cette thèse se résument de la manière suivante : Nous nous sommes tout d'abord intéressés à la problématique de l'énergie au niveau routage. Dans cette partie, les contributions se subdivisent en deux parties. Dans un premier temps, nous avons proposé une analyse théorique de la consommation d'énergie des protocoles de routage des réseaux radio multi-sauts d'appréhender au mieux les avantages et les inconvénients des uns et des autres en présence des modèles de trafic variables, un diamètre du réseau variable également et un modèle radio qui permet de modéliser les erreurs de réception des paquets. À l'issue de cette première étude, nous sommes parvenus à la conclusion que pour être économe en énergie, un protocole de routage doit avoir des approches similaires à celle des protocoles de routage géographique sans message hello. Puis, dans un second temps, nous introduisons une étude de l'influence des stratégies de relayage dans un voisinage à 1 saut sur les métriques de performance comme le taux de livraison, le nombre de messages dupliqués et la consommation d'énergie. Cette étude est suivie par une première proposition de protocole de routage géographique sans message hello (Pizza-Forwarding (PF)) exploitant des zones de relayage optimisées et sans aucune hypothèse sur les propriétés du canal radio. Dans le but de réduire considérablement la consommation de PF, nous proposons de le combiner avec une adaptation d'un protocole MAC asynchrone efficace en énergie à travers une approche transversale. La combinaison de ces deux approches montre un gain significatif en terme d'économie d'énergie avec des très bon taux de livraison et cela quels que soient les scénarios et la nature de la topologique.Energy-efficient communication protocol is a primary design goal for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Many efforts have been done to save energy anywhere in the protocol stack through temporal and spatial data aggregation schemes, energy-aware routing protocols, activity scheduling and energy-efficient MAC protocols with duty cycle. However both control packets and beacons remain which induces a huge waste energy. Moreover, their design follows the classical layered approach with the principle of modularity in system development, which can lead to a poor performance in WSNs. This thesis focuses on the issues of energy in WSNs through energy-efficient routing and medium access control protocols. The constributions of this thesis can be summarized as follows: First, we are interested on the energy issues at the routing layer for multihop wireless sensor networks (WSNs). We propose a mathematical framework to model and analyze the energy consumption of routing protocols in multihop WSNs by taking into account the protocol parameters, the traffic pattern and the network characteristics defined by the medium channel properties, the dynamic topology behavior, the network diameter and the node density. In this study, we show that Beacon-less routing protocol should be a best candidate to save energy in WSNs. We investigate the performance of some existing relay selection schemes which are used by Beacon-less routing protocols. Extensive simulations are proposed to evaluate their performance locally in terms of packet delivery ratio, duplicated packet and delay. Then, we extend the work in multihop wiriless networks and develop an optimal solution, Enhanced Nearest Forwarding within Radius, which tries to minimize the per-hop expected number of retranmissions in order to save energy. We present a new beaconless routing protocol called Pizza-Forwarding (PF) without any assumption on the radio environment: neither the radio range nor symmetric radio links nor radio properties (shadowing, etc.) are assumed or restricted. A classical greedy mode is proposed. To overcome the hole problem, packets are forwarded to an optimal node in the two hop neighbor following a reactive and optimized neighborhood discovery. In order to save energy due to idle listening and overhearing, we propose to combine PF's main concepts with an energy-efficient MAC protocol to provide a joint MAC/routing protocol suitable for a real radio environment.     Data and resource management in wireless networks via data compression, GPS-free dissemination, and learning

    “This research proposes several innovative approaches to collect data efficiently from large scale WSNs. First, a Z-compression algorithm has been proposed which exploits the temporal locality of the multi-dimensional sensing data and adapts the Z-order encoding algorithm to map multi-dimensional data to a one-dimensional data stream. The extended version of Z-compression adapts itself to working in low power WSNs running under low power listening (LPL) mode, and comprehensively analyzes its performance compressing both real-world and synthetic datasets. Second, it proposed an efficient geospatial based data collection scheme for IoTs that reduces redundant rebroadcast of up to 95% by only collecting the data of interest. As most of the low-cost wireless sensors won’t be equipped with a GPS module, the virtual coordinates are used to estimate the locations. The proposed work utilizes the anchor-based virtual coordinate system and DV-Hop (Distance vector of hops to anchors) to estimate the relative location of nodes to anchors. Also, it uses circle and hyperbola constraints to encode the position of interest (POI) and any user-defined trajectory into a data request message which allows only the sensors in the POI and routing trajectory to collect and route. It also provides location anonymity by avoiding using and transmitting GPS location information. This has been extended also for heterogeneous WSNs and refined the encoding algorithm by replacing the circle constraints with the ellipse constraints. Last, it proposes a framework that predicts the trajectory of the moving object using a Sequence-to-Sequence learning (Seq2Seq) model and only wakes-up the sensors that fall within the predicted trajectory of the moving object with a specially designed control packet. It reduces the computation time of encoding geospatial trajectory by more than 90% and preserves the location anonymity for the local edge servers”--Abstract, page iv

    Evaluation of on-demand routing in mobile ad hoc networks and proposal for a secure routing protocol

    Secure routing Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) has emerged as an important MANET research area. Initial work in MANET focused mainly on the problem of providing efficient mechanisms for finding paths in very dynamic networks, without considering the security of the routing process. Because of this, a number of attacks exploit these routing vulnerabilities to manipulate MANETs. In this thesis, we performed an in-depth evaluation and performance analysis of existing MANET Routing protocols, identifying Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) as the most robust (based on throughput, latency and routing overhead) which can be secured with negligible routing efficiency trade-off. We describe security threats, specifically showing their effects on DSR. We proposed a new routing protocol, named Authenticated Source Routing for Ad hoc Networks (ASRAN) which is an out-of-band certification-based, authenticated source routing protocol with modifications to the route acquisition process of DSR to defeat all identified attacks. Simulation studies confirm that ASRAN has a good trade-off balance in reference to the addition of security and routing efficiency
