    Multi-micron silicon photonicsplatform for highly manufacturable and versatile photonic integrated circuits

    We describe and characterize a multi-micron silicon photonics platform that was designed to combine performance, power efficiency, manufacturability, and versatility for integrated photonic applications ranging from data communications to sensors. We outline the attributes needed for broad applicability, high-volume manufacturing, and large-scale deployment of silicon photonics, and describe how the platform is favorable with respect to these attributes. We present demonstrations of key technologies needed for the communications and sensing applications, including low-loss fiber attach, compact low-loss filters, efficient hybrid wavelength division multiplexed lasers, and high-speed electro-absorption modulators and integrated photodetectors

    Per-host DDoS mitigation by direct-control reinforcement learning

    DDoS attacks plague the availability of online services today, yet like many cybersecurity problems are evolving and non-stationary. Normal and attack patterns shift as new protocols and applications are introduced, further compounded by burstiness and seasonal variation. Accordingly, it is difficult to apply machine learning-based techniques and defences in practice. Reinforcement learning (RL) may overcome this detection problem for DDoS attacks by managing and monitoring consequences; an agent’s role is to learn to optimise performance criteria (which are always available) in an online manner. We advance the state-of-the-art in RL-based DDoS mitigation by introducing two agent classes designed to act on a per-flow basis, in a protocol-agnostic manner for any network topology. This is supported by an in-depth investigation of feature suitability and empirical evaluation. Our results show the existence of flow features with high predictive power for different traffic classes, when used as a basis for feedback-loop-like control. We show that the new RL agent models can offer a significant increase in goodput of legitimate TCP traffic for many choices of host density

    Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a short-range optical wireless communication technology that has been gaining attention due to its potential to offload heavy data traffic from the congested radio wireless spectrum. At the same time, wireless communications are becoming crucial to smart manufacturing within the scope of Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 is a developing trend of high-speed data exchange in automation for manufacturing technologies and is referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. This trend requires fast, reliable, low-latency, and cost-effective data transmissions with fast synchronizations to ensure smooth operations for various processes. VLC is capable of providing reliable, low-latency, and secure connections that do not penetrate walls and is immune to electromagnetic interference. As such, this paper aims to show the potential of VLC for industrial wireless applications by examining the latest research work in VLC systems. This work also highlights and classifies challenges that might arise with the applicability of VLC and visible light positioning (VLP) systems in these settings. Given the previous work performed in these areas, and the major ongoing experimental projects looking into the use of VLC systems for industrial applications, the use of VLC and VLP systems for industrial applications shows promising potential

    From the edge to the core : towards informed vantage point selection for internet measurement studies

    Since the early days of the Internet, measurement scientists are trying to keep up with the fast-paced development of the Internet. As the Internet grew organically over time and without build-in measurability, this process requires many workarounds and due diligence. As a result, every measurement study is only as good as the data it relies on. Moreover, data quality is relative to the research question—a data set suitable to analyze one problem may be insuïŹ€icient for another. This is entirely expected as the Internet is decentralized, i.e., there is no single observation point from which we can assess the complete state of the Internet. Because of that, every measurement study needs specifically selected vantage points, which fit the research question. In this thesis, we present three different vantage points across the Internet topology— from the edge to the Internet core. We discuss their specific features, suitability for different kinds of research questions, and how to work with the corresponding data. The data sets obtained at the presented vantage points allow us to conduct three different measurement studies and shed light on the following aspects: (a) The prevalence of IP source address spoofing at a large European Internet Exchange Point (IXP), (b) the propagation distance of BGP communities, an optional transitive BGP attribute used for traïŹ€ic engineering, and (c) the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on Internet usage behavior at a large Internet Service Provider (ISP) and three IXPs.Seit den frĂŒhen Tagen des Internets versuchen Forscher im Bereich Internet Measu- rement, mit der rasanten Entwicklung des des Internets Schritt zu halten. Da das Internet im Laufe der Zeit organisch gewachsen ist und nicht mit Blick auf Messbar- keit entwickelt wurde, erfordert dieser Prozess eine Meg Workarounds und Sorgfalt. Jede Measurement Studie ist nur so gut wie die Daten, auf die sie sich stĂŒtzt. Und DatenqualitĂ€t ist relativ zur Forschungsfrage - ein Datensatz, der fĂŒr die Analyse eines Problems geeiget ist, kann fĂŒr ein anderes unzureichend sein. Dies ist durchaus zu erwarten, da das Internet dezentralisiert ist, d. h. es gibt keinen einzigen Be- obachtungspunkt, von dem aus wir den gesamten Zustand des Internets beurteilen können. Aus diesem Grund benötigt jede Measurement Studie gezielt ausgewĂ€hlte Beobachtungspunkte, die zur Forschungsfrage passen. In dieser Arbeit stellen wir drei verschiedene Beobachtungspunkte vor, die sich ĂŒber die gsamte Internet-Topologie erstrecken— vom Rand bis zum Kern des Internets. Wir diskutieren ihre spezifischen Eigenschaften, ihre Eignung fĂŒr verschiedene Klas- sen von Forschungsfragen und den Umgang mit den entsprechenden Daten.     Architecture design studio pedagogy for translating environmental sustainable elements

    Sustainable design helps reduce negative impacts on the environment and improve building performance. The architectural educators strive to impart the sustainable requisite to students. Based on the literature review and the results of an exploratory study conducted, it is evident that the pedagogy employed by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) architectural educators follows reflective-in-action and Kolb‘s theory. However, the environmental sustainable design elements are not reflected in most architectural design studio curriculum. In fact, only a few courses have elements of environmental sustainable design embedded in them. This research aims to determine the manner in which architectural educators in UTM translate environmental sustainable design elements to students. A mixed method was employed in this study: observation on the second year environmental design studio was done for four (4) months (n=7); a questionnaire was distributed to all architectural students (n=150), and interviews of educators (n=17) involved in workbase studios in the department of Architecture were conducted. The data from the observation was analyzed with categorical data analysis with a percent agreement set at 70% inter-coder reliability coefficient. The questionnaire was analyzed using SPSS version 20, with a one way ANOVA set at p<0.05 significance level to obtain results for inferences, while the interviews were analyzed by content analysis. Results on the analysis show that the architectural educators imparted aspect of environmental sustainable design elements directly to the students through various pedagogies, and the students used those environmental sustainable design elements in their design studio work. The results also reveal that the architectural curriculum is a hidden curriculum which embeds sustainable design elements; however, understanding of building ecosystem and ability to design sustainable buildings are not enforced on the students across all the design studios. It is only mandatory in the second semester of the second year studio since the theme is on the environmental paradigm. This implies that in order to empower students with the ability to design environmental sustainable buildings, more sustainable core subjects could be included in the studio curriculum. Findings could be employed by architectural educators and policy makers as a guide for future curriculum upgrading and development
