    Continued study of NAVSTAR/GPS for general aviation

    A conceptual approach for examining the full potential of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for the general aviation community is presented. Aspects of an experimental program to demonstrate these concepts are discussed. The report concludes with the observation that the true potential of GPS can only be exploited by utilization in concert with a data link. The capability afforded by the combination of position location and reporting stimulates the concept of GPS providing the auxiliary functions of collision avoidance, and approach and landing guidance. A series of general recommendations for future NASA and civil community efforts in order to continue to support GPS for general aviation are included

    Viterbi algorithm in continuous-phase frequency shift keying

    The Viterbi algorithm, an application of dynamic programming, is widely used for estimation and detection problems in digital communications and signal processing. It is used to detect signals in communication channels with memory, and to decode sequential error-control codes that are used to enhance the performance of digital communication systems. The Viterbi algorithm is also used in speech and character recognition tasks where the speech signals or characters are modeled by hidden Markov models. This project explains the basics of the Viterbi algorithm as applied to systems in digital communication systems, and speech and character recognition. It also focuses on the operations and the practical memory requirements to implement the Viterbi algorithm in real-time. A forward error correction technique known as convolutional coding with Viterbi decoding was explored. In this project, the basic Viterbi decoder behavior model was built and simulated. The convolutional encoder, BPSK and AWGN channel were implemented in MATLAB code. The BER was tested to evaluate the decoding performance. The theory of Viterbi Algorithm is introduced based on convolutional coding. The application of Viterbi Algorithm in the Continuous-Phase Frequency Shift Keying (CPFSK) is presented. Analysis for the performance is made and compared with the conventional coherent estimator. The main issue of this thesis is to implement the RTL level model of Viterbi decoder. The RTL Viterbi decoder model includes the Branch Metric block, the Add-Compare-Select block, the trace-back block, the decoding block and next state block. With all done, we further understand about the Viterbi decoding algorithm

    Technology Assessment for the Future Aeronautical Communications System

    To address emerging saturation in the VHF aeronautical bands allocated internationally for air traffic management communications, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has requested development of a common global solution through its Aeronautical Communications Panel (ACP). In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Eurocontrol initiated a joint study, with the support of NASA and U.S. and European contractors, to provide major findings on alternatives and recommendations to the ICAO ACP Working Group C (WG-C). Under an FAA/Eurocontrol cooperative research and development agreement, ACP WG-C Action Plan 17 (AP-17), commonly referred to as the Future Communications Study (FCS), NASA Glenn Research Center is responsible for the investigation of potential communications technologies that support the long-term mobile communication operational concepts of the FCS. This report documents the results of the first phase of the technology assessment and recommendations referred to in the Technology Pre-Screening Task 3.1 of AP-17. The prescreening identifies potential technologies that are under development in the industry and provides an initial assessment against a harmonized set of evaluation criteria that address high level capabilities, projected maturity for the time frame for usage in aviation, and potential applicability to aviation. A wide variety of candidate technologies were evaluated from several communications service categories including: cellular telephony; IEEE-802.xx standards; public safety radio; satellite and over-the-horizon communications; custom narrowband VHF; custom wideband; and military communications

    Bearing estimation techniques for improved performance spread spectrum receivers

    The main topic of this thesis is the use of bearing estimation techniques combined with multiple antenna elements for spread spectrum receivers. The motivation behind this work is twofold: firstly, this type of receiver structure may offer the ability to locate the position of a mobile radio in an urban environment. Secondly, these algorithms permit the application of space division multiple access (SDMA) to cellular mobile radio, which can offer large system capacity increases. The structure of these receivers may naturally be divided into two parts: signal detection and spatial filtering blocks. The signal detection problem involves locating the bearings of the multipath components which arise from the transmission of the desired user’s signal. There are a number of approaches to this problem, but here the MUSIC algorithm will be adopted. This algorithm requires an initial estimate of the number of signals impinging on the receiver, a task which can be performed by model order determination techniques. A major deficiency of MUSIC is its inability to resolve the highly–correlated and coherent multipath signals which frequently occur in a spread spectrum system. One of the simplest ways to overcome this problem is to employ spatial smoothing techniques, which trade the size of the antenna array for the ability to resolve coherent signals. The minimum description length (MDL) is one method for determining the signal model order and it can easily be extended to calculating the required degree of spatial smoothing. In this thesis, an approach to analysing the probability of correct model order determination for the MDL with spatial smoothing is presented. The performance of MUSIC, combined with spatial smoothing, is also of great significance. Two smoothing algorithms, spatial smoothing and forward–backward spatial smoothing, are analysed to compare their performance. If SDMA techniques are to be deployed in cellular systems, it is important to first estimate the performance improvements available from applying antenna array spatial filters. Initially, an additive white Gaussian noise channel is used for estimating the capacity of a perfect power–controlled code division multiple access system with SDMA techniques. Results suggest that the mean interference levels are almost halved as the antenna array size doubles, permitting large capacity increases. More realistic multipath models for urban cellular radio channels are also considered. If the transmitter gives rise to a number of point source multipath components, the bearing estimation receiver is able to capture the signal energy of each multipath. However, when a multipath component has significant angular spread, bearing estimation receivers need to combine separate directional components, at an increased cost in complexity, to obtain similar results to a matched filter. Finally, a source location algorithm for urban environments is presented, based on bearing estimation of multipath components. This algorithm requires accurate knowledge of the positions of the major multipath reflectors present in the environment. With this knowledge it is possible to determine the position of a transmitting mobile unit. Simulation results suggest that the algorithm is very sensitive to angular separation of the multipath components used for the source location technique
