An effective and efficient testing methodology for correctness testing for file recovery tools
We hereby develop an effective and efficient testing methodology for correctness testing for file recovery tools across different file systems. We assume that the tool tester is familiar with the formats of common file types and has the ability to use the tools correctly. Our methodology first derives a testing plan to minimize the number of runs required to identify the differences in tools with respect to correctness. We also present a case study on correctness testing for file carving tools, which allows us to confirm that the number of necessary testing runs is bounded and our results are statistically sound. <br /

Uncertainty explicit assessment of off-the-shelf software: Selection of an optimal diverse pair
Assessment of software COTS components is an essential part of component-based software development. Sub-optimal selection of components may lead to solutions with low quality. The assessment is based on incomplete knowledge about the COTS components themselves and other aspects, which may affect the choice such as the vendor's credentials, etc. We argue in favor of assessment methods in which uncertainty is explicitly represented (`uncertainty explicit' methods) using probability distributions. We have adapted a model (developed elsewhere by Littlewood, B. et al. (2000)) for assessment of a pair of COTS components to take account of the fault (bug) logs that might be available for the COTS components being assessed. We also provide empirical data from a study we have conducted with off-the-shelf database servers, which illustrate the use of the method

Comparing test sets and criteria in the presence of test hypotheses and fault domains
A number of authors have considered the problem of comparing test sets and criteria. Ideally
test sets are compared using a preorder with the property that test set T1 is at least as strong
as T2 if whenever T2 determines that an implementation p is faulty, T1 will also determine that
p is faulty. This notion can be extended to test criteria. However, it has been noted that very
few test sets and criteria are comparable under such an ordering; instead orderings are based
on weaker properties such as subsumes. This paper explores an alternative approach, in which
comparisons are made in the presence of a test hypothesis or fault domain. This approach allows
strong statements about fault detecting ability to be made and yet for a number of test sets and
criteria to be comparable. It may also drive incremental test generation

We provide details of a Bayesian model, which can be used to capture the uncertainties in the simultaneous assessment of two attributes, thus, also capturing the dependencies that might exist between them. We also provide empirical data from the use of this method for the assessment of off-the-shelf database servers which illustrate the advantages of āuncertainty explicitā methods over conventional methods of COTS component assessment which assume that at the end of the assessment the values of the attributes become known with certainty
Directing the studentsā mind games : A game theoretical view of the learning process
Experimental data consistently shows that the studentsā beliefs about their own academic ability have a significant effect on their performance and their level of engagement. The aim of this paper is to offer an original game-theoretical model that supports and explains such empirical data: the student is modelled as being engaged in a game, in which his/her decisions on how much to study are affected by his/her self-efficacy beliefs or self-confidence. It is argued that if game theory is used to analyse such games, it is possible to gain insights that might otherwise be missed. One of the implications for practice is that the tutor is in a position to intervene in the interaction involving the student and the studentās own beliefs. Attempting to enhance the studentās self-confidence levels through feedback is likely to result in greater engagement and better performance, even in cases where the studentās current performance does not inspire very encouraging feed-backPeer reviewedFinal Published versio
Efficient regularized isotonic regression with application to gene--gene interaction search
Isotonic regression is a nonparametric approach for fitting monotonic models
to data that has been widely studied from both theoretical and practical
perspectives. However, this approach encounters computational and statistical
overfitting issues in higher dimensions. To address both concerns, we present
an algorithm, which we term Isotonic Recursive Partitioning (IRP), for isotonic
regression based on recursively partitioning the covariate space through
solution of progressively smaller "best cut" subproblems. This creates a
regularized sequence of isotonic models of increasing model complexity that
converges to the global isotonic regression solution. The models along the
sequence are often more accurate than the unregularized isotonic regression
model because of the complexity control they offer. We quantify this complexity
control through estimation of degrees of freedom along the path. Success of the
regularized models in prediction and IRPs favorable computational properties
are demonstrated through a series of simulated and real data experiments. We
discuss application of IRP to the problem of searching for gene--gene
interactions and epistasis, and demonstrate it on data from genome-wide

On the use of testability measures for dependability assessment
Program ātestabilityā is informally, the probability that a program will fail under test if it contains at least one fault. When a dependability assessment has to be derived from the observation of a series of failure free test executions (a common need for software subject to āultra high reliabilityā requirements), measures of testability can-in theory-be used to draw inferences on program correctness. We rigorously investigate the concept of testability and its use in dependability assessment, criticizing, and improving on, previously published results. We give a general descriptive model of program execution and testing, on which the different measures of interest can be defined. We propose a more precise definition of program testability than that given by other authors, and discuss how to increase testing effectiveness without impairing program reliability in operation. We then study the mathematics of using testability to estimate, from test results: the probability of program correctness and the probability of failures. To derive the probability of program correctness, we use a Bayesian inference procedure and argue that this is more useful than deriving a classical āconfidence levelā. We also show that a high testability is not an unconditionally desirable property for a program. In particular, for programs complex enough that they are unlikely to be completely fault free, increasing testability may produce a program which will be less trustworthy, even after successful testin
Software component testing : a standard and the effectiveness of techniques
This portfolio comprises two projects linked by the theme of software component testing, which is also
often referred to as module or unit testing. One project covers its standardisation, while the other
considers the analysis and evaluation of the application of selected testing techniques to an existing
avionics system. The evaluation is based on empirical data obtained from fault reports relating to the
avionics system.
The standardisation project is based on the development of the BC BSI Software Component Testing
Standard and the BCS/BSI Glossary of terms used in software testing, which are both included in the
portfolio. The papers included for this project consider both those issues concerned with the adopted
development process and the resolution of technical matters concerning the definition of the testing
techniques and their associated measures.
The test effectiveness project documents a retrospective analysis of an operational avionics system to
determine the relative effectiveness of several software component testing techniques. The methodology
differs from that used in other test effectiveness experiments in that it considers every possible set of
inputs that are required to satisfy a testing technique rather than arbitrarily chosen values from within
this set. The three papers present the experimental methodology used, intermediate results from a failure
analysis of the studied system, and the test effectiveness results for ten testing techniques, definitions for
which were taken from the BCS BSI Software Component Testing Standard.
The creation of the two standards has filled a gap in both the national and international software testing
standards arenas. Their production required an in-depth knowledge of software component testing
techniques, the identification and use of a development process, and the negotiation of the
standardisation process at a national level. The knowledge gained during this process has been
disseminated by the author in the papers included as part of this portfolio. The investigation of test
effectiveness has introduced a new methodology for determining the test effectiveness of software
component testing techniques by means of a retrospective analysis and so provided a new set of data that
can be added to the body of empirical data on software component testing effectiveness
