    A Linear Multi-User Detector for STBC MC-CDMA Systems based on the Adaptive Implementation of the Minimum-Conditional Bit-Error-Rate Criterion and on Genetic Algorithm-assisted MMSE Channel Estimation

    The implementation of efficient baseband receivers characterized by affordable computational load is a crucial point in the development of transmission systems exploiting diversity in different domains. In this paper, we are proposing a linear multi-user detector for MIMO MC-CDMA systems with Alamouti’s Space-Time Block Coding, inspired by the concept of Minimum Conditional Bit-Error-Rate (MCBER) and relying on Genetic-Algorithm (GA)-assisted MMSE channel estimation. The MCBER combiner has been implemented in adaptive way by using Least-Mean-Square (LMS) optimization. Firstly, we shall analyze the proposed adaptive MCBER MUD receiver with ideal knowledge of Channel Status Information (CSI). Afterwards, we shall consider the complete receiver structure, encompassing also the non-ideal GA-assisted channel estimation. Simulation results evidenced that the proposed MCBER receiver always outperforms state-of-the-art receiver schemes based on EGC and MMSE criterion exploiting the same degree of channel knowledge (i.e. ideal or estimated CSI)

    Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years

    Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010–2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions

    Vector sensors for underwater : acoustic communications

    Acoustic vector sensors measure acoustic pressure and directional components separately. A claimed advantage of vector sensors over pressure-only arrays is the directional information in a collocated device, making it an attractive option for size-restricted applications. The employment of vector sensors as a receiver for underwater communications is relatively new, where the inherent directionality, usually related to particle velocity, is used for signal-to-noise gain and intersymbol interference mitigation. The fundamental question is how to use vector sensor directional components to bene t communications, which this work seeks to answer and to which it contributes by performing: analysis of acoustic pressure and particle velocity components; comparison of vector sensor receiver structures exploring beamforming and diversity; quanti cation of adapted receiver structures in distinct acoustic scenarios and using di erent types of vector sensors. Analytic expressions are shown for pressure and particle velocity channels, revealing extreme cases of correlation between vector sensors' components. Based on the correlation hypothesis, receiver structures are tested with simulated and experimental data. In a rst approach, called vector sensor passive time-reversal, we take advantage of the channel diversity provided by the inherent directivity of vector sensors' components. In a second approach named vector sensor beam steering, pressure and particle velocity components are combined, resulting in a steered beam for a speci c direction. At last, a joint beam steering and passive time-reversal is proposed, adapted for vector sensors. Tested with two distinct experimental datasets, where vector sensors are either positioned on the bottom or tied to a vessel, a broad performance comparison shows the potential of each receiver structure. Analysis of results suggests that the beam steering structure is preferable for shorter source-receiver ranges, whereas the passive time-reversal is preferable for longer ranges. Results show that the joint beam steering and passive time-reversal is the best option to reduce communication error with robustness along the range.Sensores vetoriais acústicos (em inglês, acoustic vector sensors) são dispositivos que medem, alem da pressão acústica, a velocidade de partícula.     Multiple-Target Tracking in Complex Scenarios

    In this dissertation, we develop computationally efficient algorithms for multiple-target tracking: MTT) in complex scenarios. For each of these scenarios, we develop measurement and state-space models, and then exploit the structure in these models to propose efficient tracking algorithms. In addition, we address design issues such as sensor selection and resource allocation. First, we consider MTT when the targets themselves are moving in a time-varying multipath environment. We develop a sparse-measurement model that allows us to exploit the inherent joint delay-Doppler diversity offered by the environment. We then reformulate the problem of MTT as a block-support recovery problem using the sparse measurement model. We exploit the structure of the dictionary matrix to develop a computationally efficient block support recovery algorithm: and thereby a multiple-target tracking algorithm) under the assumption that the channel state describing the time-varying multipath environment is known. Further, we also derive an upper bound on the overall error probability of wrongly identifying the support of the sparse signal. We then relax the assumption that the channel state is known. We develop a new particle filter called the Multiple Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filter: MRBPF) to jointly estimate both the target and the channel states. We also compute the posterior Cramér-Rao bound: PCRB) on the estimates of the target and the channel states and use the PCRB to find a suitable subset of antennas to be used for transmission in each tracking interval, as well as the power transmitted by these antennas. Second, we consider the problem of tracking an unknown number and types of targets using a multi-modal sensor network. In a multi-modal sensor network, different quantities associated with the same state are measured using sensors of different kinds. Hence, an efficient method that can suitably combine the diverse information measured by each sensor is required. We first develop a Hierarchical Particle Filter: HPF) to estimate the unknown state from the multi-modal measurements for a special class of problems which can be modeled hierarchically. We then model our problem of tracking using a hierarchical model and then use the proposed HPF for joint initiation, termination and tracking of multiple targets. The multi-modal data consists of the measurements collected from a radar, an infrared camera and a human scout. We also propose a unified framework for multi-modal sensor management that comprises sensor selection: SS), resource allocation: RA) and data fusion: DF). Our approach is inspired by the trading behavior of economic agents in commercial markets. We model the sensors and the sensor manager as economic agents, and the interaction among them as a double sided market with both consumers and producers. We propose an iterative double auction mechanism for computing the equilibrium of such a market. We relate the equilibrium point to the solutions of SS, RA and DF. Third, we address MTT problem in the presence of data association ambiguity that arises due to clutter. Data association corresponds to the problem of assigning a measurement to each target. We treat the data association and state estimation as separate subproblems. We develop a game-theoretic framework to solve the data association, in which we model each tracker as a player and the set of measurements as strategies. We develop utility functions for each player, and then use a regret-based learning algorithm to find the correlated equilibrium of this game. The game-theoretic approach allows us to associate measurements to all the targets simultaneously. We then use particle filtering on the reduced dimensional state of each target, independently

    Vector sensor steering-dependent performance in an underwater acoustic communication field experiment

    This paper shows the performance resulting from combining vector sensor directional components in an underwater acoustic communication experiment. The objective is to relate performance with transmission direction and range. Receiver structures based on beamforming and passive time-reversal are tested in order to quantify and compare the steerability impact of vector sensor directional components. A shallow water experiment is carried out with a bottom fixed two-axis pressure-gradient vector sensor. A ship suspended acoustic source transmits coherent modulated communication signals at various ranges and from several directions. Results show that one vector sensor can provide an up to 10 times smaller error bit rate than a pressure sensor, favoring communication robustness without size penalty.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
