    Massively Parallel Computing and the Search for Jets and Black Holes at the LHC

    Massively parallel computing at the LHC could be the next leap necessary to reach an era of new discoveries at the LHC after the Higgs discovery. Scientific computing is a critical component of the LHC experiment, including operation, trigger, LHC computing GRID, simulation, and analysis. One way to improve the physics reach of the LHC is to take advantage of the flexibility of the trigger system by integrating coprocessors based on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) or the Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture into its server farm. This cutting edge technology provides not only the means to accelerate existing algorithms, but also the opportunity to develop new algorithms that select events in the trigger that previously would have evaded detection. In this article we describe new algorithms that would allow to select in the trigger new topological signatures that include non-prompt jet and black hole--like objects in the silicon tracker.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, submitted to NIM

    Sparse optical flow regularisation for real-time visual tracking

    Optical flow can greatly improve the robustness of visual tracking algorithms. While dense optical flow algorithms have various applications, they can not be used for real-time solutions without resorting to GPU calculations. Furthermore, most optical flow algorithms fail in challenging lighting environments due to the violation of the brightness constraint. We propose a simple but effective iterative regularisation scheme for real-time, sparse optical flow algorithms, that is shown to be robust to sudden illumination changes and can handle large displacements. The algorithm proves to outperform well known techniques in real life video sequences, while being much faster to calculate. Our solution increases the robustness of a real-time particle filter based tracking application, consuming only a fraction of the available CPU power. Furthermore, a new and realistic optical flow dataset with annotated ground truth is created and made freely available for research purposes

    Massively Parallel Computing at the Large Hadron Collider up to the HL-LHC

    As the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) continues its upward progression in energy and luminosity towards the planned High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in 2025, the challenges of the experiments in processing increasingly complex events will also continue to increase. Improvements in computing technologies and algorithms will be a key part of the advances necessary to meet this challenge. Parallel computing techniques, especially those using massively parallel computing (MPC), promise to be a significant part of this effort. In these proceedings, we discuss these algorithms in the specific context of a particularly important problem: the reconstruction of charged particle tracks in the trigger algorithms in an experiment, in which high computing performance is critical for executing the track reconstruction in the available time. We discuss some areas where parallel computing has already shown benefits to the LHC experiments, and also demonstrate how a MPC-based trigger at the CMS experiment could not only improve performance, but also extend the reach of the CMS trigger system to capture events which are currently not practical to reconstruct at the trigger level.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures.     Speeding Up Particle Filter Algorithm for Tracking Multiple Targets Using CUDA Programming

    This thesis proposes to work on a parallelization method to speed up the computational runtime of the particle filter algorithm for multiple targets tracking. CUDA programming is utilized to execute the original implementation of the particle filter algorithm on GPU. The thesis provides a detailed discussion of the background information on the relevant topics. And then a presentation of the code architecture changes is followed. The detailed CUDA-based implementation is illustrated and discussed, which is followed by a discussion andcomparison of the results obtained from a series of tests.In this thesis, the introduction and description of the basic particle filter are presented first. Detailed illustrations of each step in the original implementation of the particle filter algorithm, which is executed sequentially on CPU, are provided. Then, background information of parallel programming technologies is provided, such as GPGPU and CUDA programming. The new design of the CUDA based implementation of the particle filter algorithm is proposed to speed up the execution of the original implementation, which is executed on CPU. Moreover, a detailed explanation of the CUDA-based implementation is given.Finally, the thesis will demonstrate the test results for both CPU and CUDA implementation as a comparison. The experiments indicate that the CUDA implementation can obtain a maximum of 7.5x speedup over the original implementation. After implementing more results and comparison, it was concluded that the CUDA implementation was significantly faster than the CPU version. Furthermore, the CUDA version still has much space for future optimizations to increase its performance

    Search by triplet: An efficient local track reconstruction algorithm for parallel architectures

    Millions of particles are collided every second at the LHCb detector placed inside the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The particles produced as a result of these collisions pass through various detecting devices which will produce a combined raw data rate of up to 40 Tbps by 2021. These data will be fed through a data acquisition system which reconstructs individual particles and filters the collision events in real time. This process will occur in a heterogeneous farm employing exclusively off-the-shelf CPU and GPU hardware, in a two stage process known as High Level Trigger. The reconstruction of charged particle trajectories in physics detectors, also referred to as track reconstruction or tracking, determines the position, charge and momentum of particles as they pass through detectors. The Vertex Locator subdetector (VELO) is the closest such detector to the beamline, placed outside of the region where the LHCb magnet produces a sizable magnetic field. It is used to reconstruct straight particle trajectories which serve as seeds for reconstruction of other subdetectors and to locate collision vertices. The VELO subdetector will detect up to 109 particles every second, which need to be reconstructed in real time in the High Level Trigger. We present Search by triplet, an efficient track reconstruction algorithm. Our algorithm is designed to run efficiently across parallel architectures. We extend on previous work and explain the algorithm evolution since its inception. We show the scaling of our algorithm under various situations, and analyse its amortized time in terms of complexity for each of its constituent parts and profile its performance. Our algorithm is the current state-of-the-art in VELO track reconstruction on SIMT architectures, and we qualify its improvements over previous results
