Context-awareness for mobile sensing: a survey and future directions
The evolution of smartphones together with increasing computational power have empowered developers to create innovative context-aware applications for recognizing user related social and cognitive activities in any situation and at any location. The existence and awareness of the context provides the capability of being conscious of physical environments or situations around mobile device users. This allows network services to respond proactively and intelligently based on such awareness. The key idea behind context-aware applications is to encourage users to collect, analyze and share local sensory knowledge in the purpose for a large scale community use by creating a smart network. The desired network is capable of making autonomous logical decisions to actuate environmental objects, and also assist individuals. However, many open challenges remain, which are mostly arisen due to the middleware services provided in mobile devices have limited resources in terms of power, memory and bandwidth. Thus, it becomes critically important to study how the drawbacks can be elaborated and resolved, and at the same time better understand the opportunities for the research community to contribute to the context-awareness. To this end, this paper surveys the literature over the period of 1991-2014 from the emerging concepts to applications of context-awareness in mobile platforms by providing up-to-date research and future research directions. Moreover, it points out the challenges faced in this regard and enlighten them by proposing possible solutions
The role of earth observation in an integrated deprived area mapping âsystemâ for low-to-middle income countries
Urbanization in the global South has been accompanied by the proliferation of vast informal and marginalized urban areas that lack access to essential services and infrastructure. UN-Habitat estimates that close to a billion people currently live in these deprived and informal urban settlements, generally grouped under the term of urban slums. Two major knowledge gaps undermine the efforts to monitor progress towards the corresponding sustainable development goal (i.e., SDG 11âSustainable Cities and Communities). First, the data available for cities worldwide is patchy and insufficient to differentiate between the diversity of urban areas with respect to their access to essential services and their specific infrastructure needs. Second, existing approaches used to map deprived areas (i.e., aggregated household data, Earth observation (EO), and community-driven data collection) are mostly siloed, and, individually, they often lack transferability and scalability and fail to include the opinions of different interest groups. In particular, EO-based-deprived area mapping approaches are mostly top-down, with very little attention given to ground information and interaction with urban communities and stakeholders. Existing top-down methods should be complemented with bottom-up approaches to produce routinely updated, accurate, and timely deprived area maps. In this review, we first assess the strengths and limitations of existing deprived area mapping methods. We then propose an Integrated Deprived Area Mapping System (IDeAMapS) framework that leverages the strengths of EO- and community-based approaches. The proposed framework offers a way forward to map deprived areas globally, routinely, and with maximum accuracy to support SDG 11 monitoring and the needs of different interest groups
Crisis Analytics: Big Data Driven Crisis Response
Disasters have long been a scourge for humanity. With the advances in
technology (in terms of computing, communications, and the ability to process
and analyze big data), our ability to respond to disasters is at an inflection
point. There is great optimism that big data tools can be leveraged to process
the large amounts of crisis-related data (in the form of user generated data in
addition to the traditional humanitarian data) to provide an insight into the
fast-changing situation and help drive an effective disaster response. This

A transfer-learning approach to feature extraction from cancer transcriptomes with deep autoencoders

challenging tasks that oncology medicine deals with. With the main aim
of fitting the more appropriate treatments, current personalized medicine
focuses on using data from heterogeneous sources to estimate the evolu-
tion of a given disease for the particular case of a certain patient. In recent
years, next-generation sequencing data have boosted cancer prediction by
supplying gene-expression information that has allowed diverse machine
learning algorithms to supply valuable solutions to the problem of cancer
subtype classification, which has surely contributed to better estimation
of patientâs response to diverse treatments. However, the efficacy of these
models is seriously affected by the existing imbalance between the high
dimensionality of the gene expression feature sets and the number of sam-
ples available for a particular cancer type. To counteract what is known
as the curse of dimensionality, feature selection and extraction methods
have been traditionally applied to reduce the number of input variables
present in gene expression datasets. Although these techniques work by
scaling down the input feature space, the prediction performance of tradi-
tional machine learning pipelines using these feature reduction strategies
remains moderate. In this work, we propose the use of the Pan-Cancer
dataset to pre-train deep autoencoder architectures on a subset com-
posed of thousands of gene expression samples of very diverse tumor
types. The resulting architectures are subsequently fine-tuned on a col-
lection of specific breast cancer samples. This transfer-learning approach
aims at combining supervised and unsupervised deep learning models
with traditional machine learning classification algorithms to tackle the

An evaluation of a toothbrushing programme in schools
Purpose: This paper assesses the effectiveness of a toothbrushing intervention delivered in primary schools in Yorkshire and the Humber, a Northern district of England. The toothbrushing intervention was designed with the intention of improving the oral health of young children. The paper reports the effectiveness of the intervention and explores process issues related to its co-ordination and delivery. Design/methodology/approach: The evaluation had three data gathering approaches. These were: in-depth case studies of three selected schools participating in the toothbrushing programme; interviews with oral health programme leads; and a small scale questionnaire based survey which was sent to the 18 schools participating in the intervention. Findings: The intervention was accepted by children and they enjoyed participating in the toothbrushing scheme. Moreover, children had often become more knowledgeable about toothbrusing and the consequences of not regularly cleaning their teeth. The scheme was contingent on key staff in the school and the programme was more successful where schoolâs embraced, rather than rejected the notion of improving childrenâs health alongside educational attainment. Whether the intervention made differences to brushing in the home requires further investigation, but there is a possibility that children can act as positive âchange agentsâ with siblings and other family members. Practical implications: This paper suggests that schools can be an effective setting for implementing toothbrushing interventions. Originality/value: Toothbrushing in schools programmes are a relatively new initiative that have not been fully explored, especially using qualitative approaches or focussing on the views of children. This paper makes a particular contribution to understanding the process and delivery of toothbrushing interventions delivered in primary schools. The implications for programmes outside of the UK context are discussed
A survey of machine learning techniques applied to self organizing cellular networks
In this paper, a survey of the literature of the past fifteen years involving Machine Learning (ML) algorithms applied to self organizing cellular networks is performed. In order for future networks to overcome the current limitations and address the issues of current cellular systems, it is clear that more intelligence needs to be deployed, so that a fully autonomous and flexible network can be enabled. This paper focuses on the learning perspective of Self Organizing Networks (SON) solutions and provides, not only an overview of the most common ML techniques encountered in cellular networks, but also manages to classify each paper in terms of its learning solution, while also giving some examples. The authors also classify each paper in terms of its self-organizing use-case and discuss how each proposed solution performed. In addition, a comparison between the most commonly found ML algorithms in terms of certain SON metrics is performed and general guidelines on when to choose each ML algorithm for each SON function are proposed. Lastly, this work also provides future research directions and new paradigms that the use of more robust and intelligent algorithms, together with data gathered by operators, can bring to the cellular networks domain and fully enable the concept of SON in the near future
Deep Room Recognition Using Inaudible Echos
Recent years have seen the increasing need of location awareness by mobile
applications. This paper presents a room-level indoor localization approach
based on the measured room's echos in response to a two-millisecond single-tone
inaudible chirp emitted by a smartphone's loudspeaker. Different from other
acoustics-based room recognition systems that record full-spectrum audio for up
to ten seconds, our approach records audio in a narrow inaudible band for 0.1
seconds only to preserve the user's privacy. However, the short-time and
narrowband audio signal carries limited information about the room's
characteristics, presenting challenges to accurate room recognition. This paper
applies deep learning to effectively capture the subtle fingerprints in the
rooms' acoustic responses. Our extensive experiments show that a two-layer
convolutional neural network fed with the spectrogram of the inaudible echos
achieve the best performance, compared with alternative designs using other raw
data formats and deep models. Based on this result, we design a RoomRecognize
cloud service and its mobile client library that enable the mobile application
developers to readily implement the room recognition functionality without
resorting to any existing infrastructures and add-on hardware.
Extensive evaluation shows that RoomRecognize achieves 99.7%, 97.7%, 99%, and
89% accuracy in differentiating 22 and 50 residential/office rooms, 19 spots in
a quiet museum, and 15 spots in a crowded museum, respectively. Compared with
the state-of-the-art approaches based on support vector machine, RoomRecognize
significantly improves the Pareto frontier of recognition accuracy versus
robustness against interfering sounds (e.g., ambient music).Comment: 29 page
Data analytics and algorithms in policing in England and Wales: Towards a new policy framework
RUSI was commissioned by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) to conduct an independent study into the use of data analytics by police forces in England and Wales, with a focus on algorithmic bias. The primary purpose of the project is to inform CDEIâs review of bias in algorithmic decision-making, which is focusing on four sectors, including policing, and working towards a draft framework for the ethical development and deployment of data analytics tools for policing.
This paper focuses on advanced algorithms used by the police to derive insights, inform operational decision-making or make predictions. Biometric technology, including live facial recognition, DNA analysis and fingerprint matching, are outside the direct scope of this study, as are covert surveillance capabilities and digital forensics technology, such as mobile phone data extraction and computer forensics. However, because many of the policy issues discussed in this paper stem from general underlying data protection and human rights frameworks, these issues will also be relevant to other police technologies, and their use must be considered in parallel to the tools examined in this paper.
The project involved engaging closely with senior police officers, government officials, academics, legal experts, regulatory and oversight bodies and civil society organisations. Sixty nine participants took part in the research in the form of semi-structured interviews, focus groups and roundtable discussions. The project has revealed widespread concern across the UK law enforcement community regarding the lack of official national guidance for the use of algorithms in policing, with respondents suggesting that this gap should be addressed as a matter of urgency.
Any future policy framework should be principles-based and complement existing police guidance in a âtech-agnosticâ way. Rather than establishing prescriptive rules and standards for different data technologies, the framework should establish standardised processes to ensure that data analytics projects follow recommended routes for the empirical evaluation of algorithms within their operational context and evaluate the project against legal requirements and ethical standards. The new guidance should focus on ensuring multi-disciplinary legal, ethical and operational input from the outset of a police technology project; a standard process for model development, testing and evaluation; a clear focus on the humanâmachine interaction and the ultimate interventions a data driven process may inform; and ongoing tracking and mitigation of discrimination risk
