Determining the dynamics of collaboration in EU Framework Programmes under a network perspective

Collaborative networks gained attention in the field of economics of innovation in the recent past. One of the main interests concerns the temporal analysis of such networks, both in a scientific and in a European policy context. At the European level indeed, the objective is to promote strong and durable partnerships among research institutions and with industry, going beyond the usual project-based cooperation. The purpose of this study is to investigate these long-lasting collaborative relationships between the organizations that received funds by all the first eight European Framework Programmes (EU FPs). EU FPs are multi-annual programmes providing funds mainly to EU member states, but also to associate countries, in order to promote long-term investments in several areas. Considering participations in European projects funded by all the first eight EU FPs gives us the possibility to analyze the dynamics of collaborations in the context of European research projects over a long-time span. In more detail, we adopt a novel approach to model the dynamics of participation in EU FPs by means of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and statistics tools. The main objective is to estimate the probabilities of moving from one position to another - in terms of centrality measures - across different FPs, and to understand if the position within subsequent collaborative research networks is affected by a certain path dependency. Our results confirm the existence of a path dependency, in the sense that participating in previous FPs provides a competitive advantage to organizations due to several network benefits, such as growing experience, competencies, and popularity. Phenomena of "preferential attachment" are also evident. Finally, we find that the estimated probability transition matrices are able to highlight relevant events that affected the European Union and its strategies in the field of research, which are the Treaty of Maastricht and the adoption of the European Research Area (ERA)

The European aerospace R&D collaboration network

We describe the development of the European aerospace R&D collaboration network from 1987 to 2013 with the help of the publicly available raw data of the European Framework Programmes and the German Förderkatalog. In line with the sectoral innovation system approach, we describe the evolution of the aerospace R&D network on three levels. First, based on their thematic categories, all projects are inspected and the development of technology used over time is described. Second, the composition of the aerospace R&D network concerning organization type, project composition and the special role of SMEs is analyzed. Third, the geographical distribution is shown on the technological side as well as on the actor level. A more complete view of the European funding structure is achieved by replicating the procedure on the European level to the national level, in our case Germany

Collaboration networks in a French cluster: do partners really interact with each other?

    Get PDF
We discuss the common hypothesis that, in collaborative projects, all partners interact with each other in homogeneous ways. More precisely, this research aims to determine the existence and frequency of Partner interactions in a collaborative project. From a survey of participants involved in innovation projects approved by a cluster, we collect information about 754 collaboration ties. We then test the impact of several determinants on the existence and frequency of their observed interactions

Intercollegiate athletic programs have been used to facilitate Social interactions between students within the complex nature of the college environment. In particular, many researchers have discussed the benefits of intercollegiate athletic programs in higher education, examining positive aspects of team identification such as the enhancing sense of belonging, personal self- esteem, happiness, and decreasing stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness in Social life. With the benefits of the program, it is important to scrutinize the benefits of intercollegiate athletic programs in students’ college adjustment in higher education. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to provide better understanding of the intercollegiate athletic programs in higher education to academic counselor and administrators. The purpose of two studies designed for this dissertation were as follows: (1) to assist to understand what role intercollegiate athletics have on students’ academic success by considering Social and emotional construct in college life, (2) to identify significant factors that generate team identification toward intercollegiate athletic programs in college environment. Researchers in the field of sport management should have a better knowledge of benefits of intercollegiate athletic programs to directly and indirectly assist students’ Social, emotional, and academic adjustment. Additionally, the predictive factors enhancing the degree of team identification, as resulted in the second study, support sport marketers to positively engage with student fans in a college. It is also evidence why students are highly identified to intercollegiate athletic programs as well as conceptual note that the predictive factors are directly and indirectly associated with the assistance of students’ better life in college environment
