    Four decades of research on the open-shop scheduling problem to minimize the makespan

    One of the basic scheduling problems, the open-shop scheduling problem has a broad range of applications across different sectors. The problem concerns scheduling a set of jobs, each of which has a set of operations, on a set of different machines. Each machine can process at most one operation at a time and the job processing order on the machines is immaterial, i.e., it has no implication for the scheduling outcome. The aim is to determine a schedule, i.e., the completion times of the operations processed on the machines, such that a performance criterion is optimized. While research on the problem dates back to the 1970s, there have been reviving interests in the computational complexity of variants of the problem and solution methodologies in the past few years. Aiming to provide a complete road map for future research on the open-shop scheduling problem, we present an up-to-date and comprehensive review of studies on the problem that focuses on minimizing the makespan, and discuss potential research opportunities

    Data-Aware Scheduling in Datacenters

    Datacenters have emerged as the dominant form of computing infrastructure over the last two decades. The tremendous increase in the requirements of data analysis has led to a proportional increase in power consumption and datacenters are now one of the fastest growing electricity consumers in the United States. Another rising concern is the loss of throughput due to network congestion. Scheduling models that do not explicitly account for data placement may lead to a transfer of large amounts of data over the network causing unacceptable delays. In this dissertation, we study different scheduling models that are inspired by the dual objectives of minimizing energy costs and network congestion in a datacenter. As datacenters are equipped to handle peak workloads, the average server utilization in most datacenters is very low. As a result, one can achieve huge energy savings by selectively shutting down machines when demand is low. In this dissertation, we introduce the network-aware machine activation problem to find a schedule that simultaneously minimizes the number of machines necessary and the congestion incurred in the network. Our model significantly generalizes well-studied combinatorial optimization problems such as hard-capacitated hypergraph covering and is thus strongly NP-hard. As a result, we focus on finding good approximation algorithms. Data-parallel computation frameworks such as MapReduce have popularized the design of applications that require a large amount of communication between different machines. Efficient scheduling of these communication demands is essential to guarantee efficient execution of the different applications. In the second part of the thesis, we study the approximability of the co-flow scheduling problem that has been recently introduced to capture these application-level demands. Finally, we also study the question, "In what order should one process jobs?'' Often, precedence constraints specify a partial order over the set of jobs and the objective is to find suitable schedules that satisfy the partial order. However, in the presence of hard deadline constraints, it may be impossible to find a schedule that satisfies all precedence constraints. In this thesis we formalize different variants of job scheduling with soft precedence constraints and conduct the first systematic study of these problems

Os clientes sĂŁo cada vez mais exigentes com a qualidade dos serviços e os prazos de entrega, portanto, Ă© necessĂĄrio sustentar e implementar uma programação na oficina de forma a cumprir estes prazos e ganhar vantagem no mercado automĂłvel, que Ă© um mercado competitivo e em constante evolução nos produtos e serviços a oferecer. Uma vez que o planeamento oficinal Ă© realizado manualmente no centro de colisĂŁo da Caetano Baviera, localizada em Vila Nova de Gaia, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo automatizar a ferramenta de programação de trabalhos e melhorar o acompanhamento das reparaçÔes. Este automatismo vai controlar as entradas de trabalho na empresa e melhorar os tempos de reparação, permitindo terminar o serviço o mais prĂłximo possĂ­vel da data de entrega planeada com o cliente, minimizando os atrasos. Para isso, foram realizados o levantamento e a anĂĄlise do processo de planeamento de sinistros automĂłveis no departamento de colisĂŁo e posteriormente criado um sistema de apoio Ă  decisĂŁo a partir de um modelo de programação inteira desenvolvido por ÖzgĂŒven, C., Özbakır, L., & Yavuz, Y. (2010). O sistema inclui uma interface grĂĄfica que permite ao utilizador gerar soluçÔes de programação da oficina de forma a alocar as diversas tarefas de cada trabalho a um tĂ©cnico, cumprindo os prazos de entrega. Neste estudo foi possĂ­vel verificar que o modelo cumpriu o objetivo de minimizar os tempos das viaturas dentro da oficina, ficando assim a oficina com disponibilidade para a entrada de mais viaturas semanalmente.Nowadays, ensure the customer satisfaction is the main concern of all organizations. Customers are increasingly more demanding with services' quality and the delivery time, therefore, it's imperative to sustain and implement an office planning that ensures that the deadlines are accomplished and gain advantage in the automotive sector, which is an extremely competitive market and home of a never ending evolutive process in products and services offered. Since the garage planning it's manually made in the collision center of the company Caetano Baviera, in Vila Nova de Gaia, this paper has as an objective to autotomize a work programmating tool and improve the repairing follow-up. This automatism will monitor the work entries in the workshop and get better results on the repair times, allowing to terminate the job the closest possible to the deadline agreed with the client, diminishing delays. For that, a data collection and a detailed analysis of the planning process of the vehicles claims was carried out at the collision department and posteriorly a decision support was created from an entire programming model developed by ÖzgĂŒven, C., Özbakır, L., & Yavuz, Y. (2010). This system includes a graphical interface that allows the user to create planning solutions for the workshop to allocate the various tasks of each job to a technician, fulfilling the delivery scheduled time. In this study it was possible to verify that the created template fulfilled the goal of minimizing the time of each vehicle inside the workshop, making possible more vehicles entries weekly

    Approximation and online algorithms in scheduling and coloring

    In the last three decades, approximation and online algorithms have become a major area of theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics. Scheduling and coloring problems are among the most popular ones for which approximation and online algorithms have been analyzed. On one hand, motivated by the well-known difficulty to obtain good lower bounds for the problems, it is particularly hard to prove results on the online and offline performance of algorithms. On the other hand, the theoretically oriented studies of approximation and online algorithms for scheduling and coloring have also impact on the development of better algorithms for real world applications. In the thesis we present approximation algorithms and online algorithms for a number of scheduling and labeling (coloring) problems. Our work in the first part of the thesis is devoted to scheduling problems with the average weighted completion time objective function, that is primarily motivated by some theoretical questions which were open for a number of recent years. Here we present a general method which leads to the design of polynomial time approximation schemes (PTASs), best possible approximation results. In contrast, our work in the second part of the thesis is motivated by practical applications. We consider a number of new labeling and scheduling problems which occur in the design of communication networks. Here we present and analyze efficient approximation and online algorithms. We use very simple techniques which do not require large computational resources

    Optimising airline maintenance scheduling decisions

    Airline maintenance scheduling (AMS) studies how plans or schedules are constructed to ensure that a fleet is efficiently maintained and that airline operational demands are met. Additionally, such schedules must take into consideration the different regulations airlines are subject to, while minimising maintenance costs. In this thesis, we study different formulations, solution methods, and modelling considerations, for the AMS and related problems to propose two main contributions. First, we present a new type of multi-objective mixed integer linear programming formulation which challenges traditional time discretisation. Employing the concept of time intervals, we efficiently model the airline maintenance scheduling problem with tail assignment considerations. With a focus on workshop resource allocation and individual aircraft flight operations, and the use of a custom iterative algorithm, we solve large and long-term real-world instances (16000 flights, 529 aircraft, 8 maintenance workshops) in reasonable computational time. Moreover, we provide evidence to suggest, that our framework provides near-optimal solutions, and that inter-airline cooperation is beneficial for workshops. Second, we propose a new hybrid solution procedure to solve the aircraft recovery problem. Here, we study how to re-schedule flights and re-assign aircraft to these, to resume airline operations after an unforeseen disruption. We do so while taking operational restrictions into account. Specifically, restrictions on aircraft, maintenance, crew duty, and passenger delay are accounted for. The flexibility of the approach allows for further operational restrictions to be easily introduced. The hybrid solution procedure involves the combination of column generation with learning-based hyperheuristics. The latter, adaptively selects exact or metaheuristic algorithms to generate columns. The five different algorithms implemented, two of which we developed, were collected and released as a Python package (Torres Sanchez, 2020). Findings suggest that the framework produces fast and insightful recovery solutions

    Multi-resource management in embedded real-time systems

    This thesis addresses the problem of online multi-resource management in embedded real-time systems. It focuses on three research questions. The first question concentrates on how to design an efficient hierarchical scheduling framework for supporting independent development and analysis of component based systems, to provide temporal isolation between components. The second question investigates how to change the mapping of resources to tasks and components during run-time efficiently and predictably, and how to analyze the latency of such a system mode change in systems comprised of several scalable components. The third question deals with the scheduling and analysis of a set of parallel-tasks with real-time constraints which require simultaneous access to several different resources. For providing temporal isolation we chose a reservation-based approach. We first focused on processor reservations, where timed events play an important role. Common examples are task deadlines, periodic release of tasks, budget replenishment and budget depletion. Efficient timer management is therefore essential. We investigated the overheads in traditional timer management techniques and presented a mechanism called Relative Timed Event Queues (RELTEQ), which provides an expressive set of primitives at a low processor and memory overhead. We then leveraged RELTEQ to create an efficient, modular and extensible design for enhancing a real-time operating system with periodic tasks, polling, idling periodic and deferrable servers, and a two-level fixed-priority Hierarchical Scheduling Framework (HSF). The HSF design provides temporal isolation and supports independent development of components by separating the global and local scheduling, and allowing each server to define a dedicated scheduler. Furthermore, the design addresses the system overheads inherent to an HSF and prevents undesirable interference between components. It limits the interference of inactive servers on the system level by means of wakeup events and a combination of inactive server queues with a stopwatch queue. Our implementation is modular and requires only a few modifications of the underlying operating system. We then investigated scalable components operating in a memory-constrained system. We first showed how to reduce the memory requirements in a streaming multimedia application, based on a particular priority assignment of the different components along the processing chain. Then we investigated adapting the resource provisions to tasks during runtime, referred to as mode changes. We presented a novel mode change protocol called Swift Mode Changes, which relies on Fixed Priority with Deferred preemption Scheduling to reduce the mode change latency bound compared to existing protocols based on Fixed Priority Preemptive Scheduling. We then presented a new partitioned parallel-task scheduling algorithm called Parallel-SRP (PSRP), which generalizes MSRP for multiprocessors, and the corresponding schedulability analysis for the problem of multi-resource scheduling of parallel tasks with real-time constraints. We showed that the algorithm is deadlock-free, derived a maximum bound on blocking, and used this bound as a basis for a schedulability test. We then demonstrated how PSRP can exploit the inherent parallelism of a platform comprised of multiple heterogeneous resources. Finally, we presented Grasp, which is a visualization toolset aiming to provide insight into the behavior of complex real-time systems. Its flexible plugin infrastructure allows for easy extension with custom visualization and analysis techniques for automatic trace verification. Its capabilities include the visualization of hierarchical multiprocessor systems, including partitioned and global multiprocessor scheduling with migrating tasks and jobs, communication between jobs via shared memory and message passing, and hierarchical scheduling in combination with multiprocessor scheduling. For tracing distributed systems with asynchronous local clocks Grasp also supports the synchronization of traces from different processors during the visualization and analysis

    Application of lean scheduling and production control in non-repetitive manufacturing systems using intelligent agent decision support

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Lean Manufacturing (LM) is widely accepted as a world-class manufacturing paradigm, its currency and superiority are manifested in numerous recent success stories. Most lean tools including Just-in-Time (JIT) were designed for repetitive serial production systems. This resulted in a substantial stream of research which dismissed a priori the suitability of LM for non-repetitive non-serial job-shops. The extension of LM into non-repetitive production systems is opposed on the basis of the sheer complexity of applying JIT pull production control in non-repetitive systems fabricating a high variety of products. However, the application of LM in job-shops is not unexplored. Studies proposing the extension of leanness into non-repetitive production systems have promoted the modification of pull control mechanisms or reconfiguration of job-shops into cellular manufacturing systems. This thesis sought to address the shortcomings of the aforementioned approaches. The contribution of this thesis to knowledge in the field of production and operations management is threefold: Firstly, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) is designed to directly apply pull production control to a good approximation of a real-life job-shop. The scale and complexity of the developed MAS prove that the application of pull production control in non-repetitive manufacturing systems is challenging, perplex and laborious. Secondly, the thesis examines three pull production control mechanisms namely, Kanban, Base Stock and Constant Work-in-Process (CONWIP) which it enhances so as to prevent system deadlocks, an issue largely unaddressed in the relevant literature. Having successfully tested the transferability of pull production control to non-repetitive manufacturing, the third contribution of this thesis is that it uses experimental and empirical data to examine the impact of pull production control on job-shop performance. The thesis identifies issues resulting from the application of pull control in job-shops which have implications for industry practice and concludes by outlining further research that can be undertaken in this direction
