    Using Partial Reconfiguration for SoC Design and Implementation

    Most reconfigurable systems rely on FPGA technology. Among these ones, those which permit dynamic and partial reconfiguration, offer added benefits in flexibility, in-field device upgrade, improved design and manufacturing time, and even, in some cases, power consumption reductions. However, dynamic reconfiguration is a complex task, and the real benefits of its use in real applications have been often questioned. This paper presents an overview of the partial reconfiguration technique application, along with four original applications. The main goal of these applications is to test several architectures with different flexibility and, to search for the partial reconfiguration "killing application", that is, the application that better demonstrates the benefits of today reconfigurable systems based on commercial FPGAs. Therefore, the presented applications are rather a proof of concept, than fully operative and closed systems. First, a brief introduction to the partial reconfigurable systems application topic has been included. After that, the descriptions of the created reconfigurable systems are presented: first, an on-chip communications emulation framework, second, an on chip debugging system, third, a wireless sensor network reconfigurable node and finally, a remote reconfigurable client-server device. Each application is described in a separate section of the paper along with some test and results. General conclusions are included at the end of the pape

    Reconfigurable Antenna Systems: Platform implementation and low-power matters

    Antennas are a necessary and often critical component of all wireless systems, of which they share the ever-increasing complexity and the challenges of present and emerging trends. 5G, massive low-orbit satellite architectures (e.g. OneWeb), industry 4.0, Internet of Things (IoT), satcom on-the-move, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Vehicles, all call for highly flexible systems, and antenna reconfigurability is an enabling part of these advances. The terminal segment is particularly crucial in this sense, encompassing both very compact antennas or low-profile antennas, all with various adaptability/reconfigurability requirements. This thesis work has dealt with hardware implementation issues of Radio Frequency (RF) antenna reconfigurability, and in particular with low-power General Purpose Platforms (GPP); the work has encompassed Software Defined Radio (SDR) implementation, as well as embedded low-power platforms (in particular on STM32 Nucleo family of micro-controller). The hardware-software platform work has been complemented with design and fabrication of reconfigurable antennas in standard technology, and the resulting systems tested. The selected antenna technology was antenna array with continuously steerable beam, controlled by voltage-driven phase shifting circuits. Applications included notably Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployed in the Italian scientific mission in Antarctica, in a traffic-monitoring case study (EU H2020 project), and into an innovative Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) antenna concept (patent application submitted). The SDR implementation focused on a low-cost and low-power Software-defined radio open-source platform with IEEE 802.11 a/g/p wireless communication capability. In a second embodiment, the flexibility of the SDR paradigm has been traded off to avoid the power consumption associated to the relevant operating system. Application field of reconfigurable antenna is, however, not limited to a better management of the energy consumption. The analysis has also been extended to satellites positioning application. A novel beamforming method has presented demonstrating improvements in the quality of signals received from satellites.     Predictive Analytics Lead to Smarter Self-Organizing Directional Wireless Backbone Networks

    Directional wireless systems are becoming a cost-effective approach towards providing a high-speed, reliable, broadband connection for the ubiquitous mobile wireless devices in use today. The most common of these systems consists of narrow-beam radio frequency (RF) and free-space-optical (FSO) links, which offer speeds between 100Mbps and 100Gbps while offering bit-error-rates comparable to fixed fiber optic installations. In addition, spatial and spectral efficiencies are accessible with directional wireless systems that cannot be matched with broadcast systems. The added benefits of compact designs permit the installation of directional antennas on-board unmanned autonomous systems (UAS) to provide network availability to regions prone to natural disasters, in maritime situations, and in war-torn countries that lack infrastructure security. In addition, through the use of intelligent network-centric algorithms, a flexible airborne backbone network can be established to dodge the scalability limitations of traditional omnidirectional wireless networks. Assuring end-to-end connectivity and coverage is the main challenge in the design of directional wireless backbone (DWB) networks. Conflating the duality of these objectives with the dynamical nature of the environment in which DWB networks are deployed, in addition to the standardized network metrics such as latency-minimization and throughput maximization, demands a rigorous control process that encompasses all aspects of the system. This includes the mechanical steering of the directional point-to-point link and the monitoring of aggregate network performance (e.g. dropped packets). The inclusion of processes for topology control, mobility management, pointing, acquisition, and tracking of the directional antennas, alongside traditional protocols (e.g. IPv6) provides a rigorous framework for next-generation mobile directional communication networks. This dissertation provides a novel approach to increase reliability in reconfigurable beam-steered directional wireless backbone networks by predicating optimal network reconfigurations wherein the network is modeled as a giant molecule in which the point-to-point links between two UASs are able to grow and retract analogously to the bonds between atoms in a molecule. This cross-disciplinary methodology explores the application of potential energy surfaces and normal mode analysis as an extension to the topology control optimization. Each of these methodologies provides a new and unique ability for predicting unstable configurations of DWB networks through an understanding of second-order principle dynamics inherent within the aggregate configuration of the system. This insight is not available through monitoring individual link performance. Together, the techniques used to model the DWB network through molecular dynamics are referred to as predictive analytics and provide reliable results that lead to smarter self-organizing reconfigurable beam-steered DWB networks. Furthermore, a comprehensive control architecture is proposed that complements traditional network science (e.g. Internet protocol) and the unique design aspects of DWB networks. The distinct ability of a beam-steered DWB network to adjust the direction of its antennas (i.e. reconfigure) in response to degraded effects within the atmosphere or due to an increased separation of nodes, is not incorporated in traditional network processes such re-routing mechanism, and therefore, processes for reconfiguration can be abstracted which both optimize the physical interconnections while maintaining interoperability with existing protocols. This control framework is validated using network metrics for latency and throughput and compared to existing architectures which use only standard re-routing mechanisms. Results are shown that validate both the analogous molecular modeling of a reconfigurable beam-steered directional wireless backbone network and a comprehensive control architecture which coalesces the unique capabilities of reconfiguration and mobility of mobile wireless backbone networks with existing protocols for networks such as IPv6

    This research identifies and evaluates the impact of several architectural design choices in relation to airborne networking in contested environments related to autonomous topology control. Using simulation, we evaluate topology reconfiguration effectiveness using classical performance metrics for different point-to-point communication architectures. Our attention is focused on the design choices which have the greatest impact on reliability, scalability, and performance. In this work, we discuss the impact of several practical considerations of airborne networking in contested environments related to autonomous topology control modeling. Using simulation, we derive multiple classical performance metrics to evaluate topology reconfiguration effectiveness for different point-to-point communication architecture attributes for the purpose of qualifying protocol design elements

    POINTING, ACQUISITION, AND TRACKING FOR DIRECTIONAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS

    Directional wireless communications networks (DWNs) are expected to become a workhorse of the military, as they provide great network capacity in hostile areas where omnidirectional RF systems can put their users in harm's way. These networks will also be able to adapt to new missions, change topologies, use different communications technologies, yet still reliably serve all their terminal users. DWNs also have the potential to greatly expand the capacity of civilian and commercial wireless communication. The inherently narrow beams present in these types of systems require a means of steering them, acquiring the links, and tracking to maintain connectivity. This area of technological challenges encompasses all the issues of pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT). iii The two main technologies for DWNs are Free-Space Optical (FSO) and millimeter wave RF (mmW). FSO offers tremendous bandwidths, long ranges, and uses existing fiber-based technologies. However, it suffers from severe turbulence effects when passing through long (>kms) atmospheric paths, and can be severely affected by obscuration. MmW systems do not suffer from atmospheric effects nearly as much, use much more sensitive coherent receivers, and have wider beam divergences allowing for easier pointing. They do, however, suffer from a lack of available small-sized power amplifiers, complicated RF infrastructure that must be steered with a platform, and the requirement that all acquisition and tracking be done with the data beam, as opposed to FSO which uses a beacon laser for acquisition and a fast steering mirror for tracking. This thesis analyzes the many considerations required for designing and implementing a FSO PAT system, and extends this work to the rapidly expanding area of mmW DWN systems. Different types of beam acquisition methods are simulated and tested, and the tradeoffs between various design specifications are analyzed and simulated to give insight into how to best implement a transceiver platform. An experimental test-bed of six FSO platforms is also designed and constructed to test some of these concepts, along with the implementation of a three-node biconnected network. Finally, experiments have been conducted to assess the performance of fixed infrastructure routing hardware when operating with a physically reconfigurable RF network

    PROPOSED MIDDLEWARE SOLUTION FOR RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED DISTRIBUTED EMBEDDED NETWORKS

    The explosion in processing power of embedded systems has enabled distributed embedded networks to perform more complicated tasks. Middleware are sets of encapsulations of common and network/operating system-specific functionality into generic, reusable frameworks to manage such distributed networks. This thesis will survey and categorize popular middleware implementations into three adapted layers: host-infrastructure, distribution, and common services. This thesis will then apply a quantitative approach to grading and proposing a single middleware solution from all layers for two target platforms: CubeSats and autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). CubeSats are 10x10x10cm nanosatellites that are popular university-level space missions, and impose power and volume constraints. Autonomous UAVs are similarly-popular hobbyist-level vehicles that exhibit similar power and volume constraints. The MAVLink middleware from the host-infrastructure layer is proposed as the middleware to manage the distributed embedded networks powering these platforms in future projects. Finally, this thesis presents a performance analysis on MAVLink managing the ARM Cortex-M 32-bit processors that power the target platforms
