    Chunk Tagger - Statistical Recognition of Noun Phrases

    We describe a stochastic approach to partial parsing, i.e., the recognition of syntactic structures of limited depth. The technique utilises Markov Models, but goes beyond usual bracketing approaches, since it is capable of recognising not only the boundaries, but also the internal structure and syntactic category of simple as well as complex NP's, PP's, AP's and adverbials.     On Dependency Analysis via Contractions and Weighted FSTs

    Arc contractions in syntactic dependency graphs can be used to decide which graphs are trees. The paper observes that these contractions can be expressed with weighted finite-state transducers (weighted FST) that operate on string-encoded trees. The observation gives rise to a finite-state parsing algorithm that computes the parse forest and extracts the best parses from it. The algorithm is customizable to functional and bilexical dependency parsing, and it can be extended to non-projective parsing via a multi-planar encoding with prior results on high recall. Our experiments support an analysis of projective parsing according to which the worst-case time complexity of the algorithm is quadratic to the sentence length, and linear to the overlapping arcs and the number of functional categories of the arcs. The results suggest several interesting directions towards efficient and highprecision dependency parsing that takes advantage of the flexibility and the demonstrated ambiguity-packing capacity of such a parser.Peer reviewe

    Transducers from Rewrite Rules with Backreferences

    Context sensitive rewrite rules have been widely used in several areas of natural language processing, including syntax, morphology, phonology and speech processing. Kaplan and Kay, Karttunen, and Mohri & Sproat have given various algorithms to compile such rewrite rules into finite-state transducers. The present paper extends this work by allowing a limited form of backreferencing in such rules.     Can Subcategorisation Probabilities Help a Statistical Parser?

    Research into the automatic acquisition of lexical information from corpora is starting to produce large-scale computational lexicons containing data on the relative frequencies of subcategorisation alternatives for individual verbal predicates. However, the empirical question of whether this type of frequency information can in practice improve the accuracy of a statistical parser has not yet been answered. In this paper we describe an experiment with a wide-coverage statistical grammar and parser for English and subcategorisation frequencies acquired from ten million words of text which shows that this information can significantly improve parse accuracy.Comment: 9 pages, uses colacl.st

    Enrichment of Renaissance texts with proper names

    International audienceThe Renom project proposes to enrich Renaissance texts by proper names. These texts present two new challenges: great diversity due to various spellings of words; numerous XML-TEI tags to save the exact format of original edition. The task consisted to add Named Entity tags to this format tagging with generally the left context and sometimes the right context of a name. To do that, we improved the free and open source program CasSys to parse texts with Unitex graph cascades and we built dictionaries and specific cascades. The slot error rate was 6.1%.     Dependency parsing with an extended finite-state approach

    This article presents a dependency parsing scheme using an extended finite-state approach. The parser augments input representation with "channels" so that links representing syntactic dependency relations among words can be accommodated and iterates on the input a number of times to arrive at a fixed point.
