    Attitude Control and Consensus on SO(3) Using Sinusoids: Theory and Application to Small Satellites

    We present and analyze kinematic-level and dynamic-level feedback control algorithms for single agent attitude control and multi-agent attitude consensus on SO(3). The kinematic-level algorithms yield attitude feedback controls that are piecewise-continuous sinusoidal angular velocities. The dynamic-level algorithms yield attitude feedback controls that are relative angles of rotational-mass actuators, which are continuous but only piecewise continuously differentiable sinusoids. Furthermore, the dynamic-level algorithms are designed to accommodate actuator stroke constraint.     Nonlinear control and synchronization of multiple Lagrangian systems with application to tethered formation flight spacecraft

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 217-228).This dissertation focuses on the synchronization of multiple dynamical systems using contraction theory, with applications to cooperative control of multi-agent systems and synchronization of interconnected dynamics such as tethered formation flight. Inspired by stable combinations of biological systems, contraction nonlinear stability theory provides a systematic method to reduce arbitrarily complex systems into simpler elements. One application of oscillation synchronization is a fully decentralized nonlinear control law, which eliminates the need for any inter-satellite communications. We use contraction theory to prove that a nonlinear control law stabilizing a single-tethered spacecraft can also stabilize arbitrarily large circular arrays of tethered spacecraft, as well as a three-spacecraft inline configuration. The convergence result is global and exponential due to the nature of contraction analysis. The proposed decentralized control strategy is further extended to robust adaptive control in order to account for model uncertainties. Numerical simulations and experimental results validate the exponential stability of the tethered formation arrays by implementing a tracking control law derived from the reduced dynamics.(cont.) This thesis also presents a new synchronization framework that can be directly applied to cooperative control of autonomous aerospace vehicles and oscillation synchronization in robotic manipulation and locomotion. We construct a dynamical network of multiple Lagrangian systems by adding diffusive couplings to otherwise freely moving or flying vehicles. The proposed tracking control law synchronizes an arbitrary number of robots into a common trajectory with global exponential convergence. The proposed control law is much simpler than earlier work in terms of both the computational load and the required signals. Furthermore, in contrast with earlier work which used simple double integrator models, the proposed method permits highly nonlinear systems and is further extended to adaptive synchronization, partial-joint coupling, and concurrent synchronization. Another contribution of the dissertation is a novel nonlinear control approach for underactuated tethered formation flight spacecraft. This is motivated by a controllability analysis that indicates that both array resizing and spin-up are fully controllable by the reaction wheels and the tether motor. This work reports the first propellant-free underactuated control results for tethered formation flight.(cont.) We also fulfill the potential of the proposed strategy by providing a new momentum dumping method. This dissertation work has evolved based on the research philosophy of balancing theoretical work with practicality, aiming at physically intuitive algorithms that can be directly implemented in real systems. In order to validate the effectiveness of the decentralized control and estimation framework, a new suite of hardware has been designed and added to the SPHERES (Synchronize Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellite) testbed. Such recent improvements described in this dissertation include a new tether reel mechanism, a force-torque sensor and an air-bearing carriage with a reaction wheel. This thesis also introduces a novel relative attitude estimator, in which a series of Kalman filters incorporate the gyro, force-torque sensor and ultrasound ranging measurements.     Development of Path Following and Cooperative Motion Control Algorithms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    Research on autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is motivating and challenging owing to their specific applications such as defence, mine counter measure, pipeline inspections, risky missions e.g. oceanographic observations, bathymetric surveys, ocean floor analysis, military uses, and recovery of lost man-made objects. Motion control of AUVs is concerned with navigation, path following and co-operative motion control problems. A number of control complexities are encountered in AUV motion control such as nonlinearities in mass matrix, hydrodynamic terms and ocean currents. These pose challenges to develop efficient control algorithms such that the accurate path following task and effective group co-ordination can be achieved in face of parametric uncertainties and disturbances and communication constraints in acoustic medium. This thesis first proposes development of a number of path following control laws and new co-operative motion control algorithms for achieving successful motion control objectives. These algorithms are potential function based proportional derivative path following control laws, adaptive trajectory based formation control, formation control of multiple AUVs steering towards a safety region, mathematical potential function based flocking control and fuzzy potential function based flocking control. Development of a path following control algorithm aims at generating appropriate control law, such that an AUV tracks a predefined desired path. In this thesis first path following control laws are developed for an underactuated (the number of inputs are lesser than the degrees of freedom) AUV. A potential function based proportional derivative (PFPD) control law is derived to govern the motion of the AUV in an obstacle-rich environment (environment populated by obstacles). For obstacle avoidance, a mathematical potential function is exploited, which provides a repulsive force between the AUV and the solid obstacles intersecting the desired path. Simulations were carried out considering a special type of AUV i.e. Omni Directional Intelligent Navigator (ODIN) to study the efficacy of the developed PFPD controller. For achieving more accuracy in the path following performance, a new controller (potential function based augmented proportional derivative, PFAPD) has been designed by the mass matrix augmentation with PFPD control law.     Motion Coordination of Aerial Vehicles

    The coordinated motion control of multiple vehicles has emerged as a field of major interest in the control community. This thesis addresses two topics related to the control of a group of aerial vehicles: the output feedback attitude synchronization of rigid bodies and the formation control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) capable of Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL). The information flow between members of the team is assumed fixed and undirected. The first part of this thesis is devoted to the attitude synchronization of a group of spacecraft. In this context, we propose control schemes for the synchronization of a group of spacecraft to a predefined attitude trajectory without angular velocity measurements. We also propose some velocity-free consensus-seeking schemes allowing a group of spacecraft to align their attitudes, without reference trajectory specification. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the control of a group of VTOL-UAVs in the Special Euclidian group SE(3), i.e., position and orientation. In this context, we propose a few position coordination schemes without linear-velocity measurements. We also propose some solutions to the same problem in the presence of communication time-delays between aircraft. To solve the above mentioned problems, several new technical tools have been introduced in this thesis to overcome the deficiencies of the existing techniques in this field

    Fault Detection, Isolation and Identification of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Using Dynamic Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms

    The main objective of this thesis is to propose and develop a fault detection, isolation and identification scheme based on dynamic neural networks (DNNs) and genetic algorithm (GA) for thrusters of the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) which provide the force for performing the formation missions. In order to achieve the fault detection task, in this thesis two level of fault detection are proposed, I) Agent-level fault detection (ALFD) and II) Formation-level fault detection (FLFD). The proposed agent-level fault detection scheme includes a dynamic neural network which is trained with absolute measurements and states of each thruster in the AUV. The genetic algorithm is used in order to train the DNN. The results from simulations indicate that although the ALFD scheme can detect the high severity faults, for low severity faults the accuracy is not satisfy our expectations. Therefore, a formation-level fault detection scheme is developed. In the proposed formation-level fault detection scheme, a fault detection unit consist of two dynamic neural networks corresponding to its adjacent neighbors, is employed in each AUV to detect the fault in formation. Each DNN of the fault detection unit is trained with one relative and one absolute measurements. Similar to ALFD scheme, these two DNNs are trained with GA. The simulation results and confusion matrix analysis indicate that our proposed FLFD can detect both low severity and high severity faults with high level of accuracy compare to ALFD scheme. In order to indicate the type and severity of the occurred fault the agent-level and formation-level fault isolation and identification schemes are developed and their performances are compared. In the proposed fault isolation and identification schemes, two neural networks are employed for isolating the type of the fault in the thruster of the AUV and determining the severity of the occurred fault. In the fist step, a multi layer perceptron (MLP) neural network categorize the type of the fault into thruster blocking, flooded thruster and loss of effectiveness in rotor and in the next step a MLP neural network classify the severity into low, medium and high. The neural networks in fault isolation and identification schemes are trained based on genetic algorithm with various data sets which are obtained through different faulty operating condition of the AUV. The simulation results and the confusion matrix analysis indicate that the proposed formation-level fault isolation and identification schemes have a better performance comparing to agent-level schemes and they are capable of isolating and identifying the faults with high level of accuracy and precision
