    Current and Future Challenges in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

    Knowledge Representation and Reasoning is a central, longstanding, and active area of Artificial Intelligence. Over the years it has evolved significantly; more recently it has been challenged and complemented by research in areas such as machine learning and reasoning under uncertainty. In July 2022 a Dagstuhl Perspectives workshop was held on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. The goal of the workshop was to describe the state of the art in the field, including its relation with other areas, its shortcomings and strengths, together with recommendations for future progress. We developed this manifesto based on the presentations, panels, working groups, and discussions that took place at the Dagstuhl Workshop. It is a declaration of our views on Knowledge Representation: its origins, goals, milestones, and current foci; its relation to other disciplines, especially to Artificial Intelligence; and on its challenges, along with key priorities for the next decade

    Computational creativity: an interdisciplinary approach to sequential learning and creative generations

    Creativity seems mysterious; when we experience a creative spark, it is difficult to explain how we got that idea, and we often recall notions like ``inspiration" and ``intuition" when we try to explain the phenomenon. The fact that we are clueless about how a creative idea manifests itself does not necessarily imply that a scientific explanation cannot exist. We are unaware of how we perform certain tasks, such as biking or language understanding, but we have more and more computational techniques that can replicate and hopefully explain such activities. We should understand that every creative act is a fruit of experience, society, and culture. Nothing comes from nothing. Novel ideas are never utterly new; they stem from representations that are already in mind. Creativity involves establishing new relations between pieces of information we had already: then, the greater the knowledge, the greater the possibility of finding uncommon connections, and the more the potential to be creative. In this vein, a beneficial approach to a better understanding of creativity must include computational or mechanistic accounts of such inner procedures and the formation of the knowledge that enables such connections. That is the aim of Computational Creativity: to develop computational systems for emulating and studying creativity. Hence, this dissertation focuses on these two related research areas: discussing computational mechanisms to generate creative artifacts and describing some implicit cognitive processes that can form the basis for creative thoughts

    Ditransitives in germanic languages. Synchronic and diachronic aspects

    This volume brings together twelve empirical studies on ditransitive constructions in Germanic languages and their varieties, past and present. Specifically, the volume includes contributions on a wide variety of Germanic languages, including English, Dutch, and German, but also Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian, as well as lesser-studied ones such as Faroese. While the first part of the volume focuses on diachronic aspects, the second part showcases a variety of synchronic aspects relating to ditransitive patterns. Methodologically, the volume covers both experimental and corpus-based studies. Questions addressed by the papers in the volume are, among others, issues like the cross-linguistic pervasiveness and cognitive reality of factors involved in the choice between different ditransitive constructions, or differences and similarities in the diachronic development of ditransitives. The volume’s broad scope and comparative perspective offers comprehensive insights into well-known phenomena and furthers our understanding of variation across languages of the same family

    The aim of this thesis is to investigate a field that until a few years ago was foreign to and distant from the penal system. The purpose of this undertaking is to account for the role that technology could plays in the Italian Criminal Law system. More specifically, this thesis attempts to scrutinize a very intricate phase of adjudication. After deciding on the type of an individual's liability, a judge must decide on the severity of the penalty. This type of decision implies a prognostic assessment that looks to the future. It is precisely in this field and in prognostic assessments that, as has already been anticipated in the United, instruments and processes are inserted in the pre-trial but also in the decision-making phase. In this contribution, we attempt to describe the current state of this field, trying, as a matter of method, to select the most relevant or most used tools. Using comparative and qualitative methods, the uses of some of these instruments in the supranational legal system are analyzed. Focusing attention on the Italian system, an attempt was made to investigate the nature of the element of an individual's ‘social dangerousness’ (pericolosità sociale) and capacity to commit offences, types of assessments that are fundamental in our system because they are part of various types of decisions, including the choice of the best sanctioning treatment. It was decided to turn our attention to this latter field because it is believed that the judge does not always have the time, the means and the ability to assess all the elements of a subject and identify the best 'individualizing' treatment in order to fully realize the function of Article 27, paragraph 3 of the Constitution

    Adoption of the big data concept in the construction industry

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Wolverhampton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.The Big Data (BD) boom has increased exponentially in recent years, reaching even the most traditional industries. In construction, the migration towards sustainability and new technologies that produce user and environmentally friendly projects is now a requirement in almost every country. Meanwhile, BD technology has become a possible solution to the challenges that the industry faces nowadays with some authors naming this technology as the future of construction. However, despite this reception, studies that explain in detail the factors that favour the adoption of BD are scarce or non-existent and the adoption itself has proven to be a challenge, especially in industries such as construction that are not technology driven. Understanding the critical factors that influence BD adoption has become the focus of many industries that seek to exploit the benefits offered by this technology. Therefore, the aim of this research is to explore the adoption of BD in the construction industry. First, the awareness of the Dominican Republic’s construction industry on the BD concept, its characteristics, and benefits was assessed. The key drivers, strategies, and challenges regarding the adoption of BD in the industry were also investigated. A qualitative method was selected to identify these strategies due to the lack of maturity and the scarcity of sources that address the subject. Semi-structured interviews were selected as the data collection tool, and content and thematic analysis were chosen to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the interviews. Endsley’s model of situational awareness was adapted to provide a better understanding of the industry’s awareness of BD. The sampling technique adopted was non-probabilistic due to some of the specific criteria identified during the secondary data collection process. In the data collection process, 21 interviews were conducted with representatives of 19 organisations with an undoubted presence in the construction market of the Dominican Republic. The results showed that there is an overall basic level of awareness about BD in the construction industry of the Dominican Republic. Moreover, nine key drivers for BD adoption were identified and grouped into internal and external drivers. Additionally, four main strategies or central policies for adopting the technology and seven main challenges were identified. These findings were used to develop an organisation readiness assessment tool and a strategic framework for BD adoption in the construction industry. This study concluded that new technologies such as Big Data (BD) require a change in the industry's culture and the adoption of digital approaches to be fully implemented. The findings of this research provide valuable insights that can help the construction industry adopt BD technology, thus accessing the short and long-term benefits that this technology offers.Government of the Dominican Republic through the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology

    Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI): What we know and what is left to attain Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence

Usually, it is essential to understand the reasoning behind an AI mode ľs decision-making. Thus, the need for eXplainable AI (XAI) methods for improving trust in AI models has arisen. XAI has become a popular research subject within the AI field in recent years. Existing survey papers have tackled the concepts of XAI, its general terms, and post-hoc explainability methods but there have not been any reviews that have looked at the assessment methods, available tools, XAI datasets, and other related aspects. Therefore, in this comprehensive study, we provide readers with an overview of the current research and trends in this rapidly emerging area with a case study example. The study starts by explaining the background of XAI, common definitions, and summarizing recently proposed techniques in XAI for supervised machine learning. The review divides XAI techniques into four axes using a hierarchical categorization system: (i) data explainability, (ii) model explainability, (iii) post-hoc explainability, and (iv) assessment of explanations. We also introduce available evaluation metrics as well as open-source packages and datasets with future research directions. Then, the significance of explainability in terms of legal demands, user viewpoints, and application orientation is outlined, termed as XAI concerns. This paper advocates for tailoring explanation content to specific user types. An examination of XAI techniques and evaluation was conducted by looking at 410 critical articles, published between January 2016 and October 2022, in reputed journals and using a wide range of research databases as a source of information.     Development of an Interpersonally Grounded Construction Management Curriculum Foundation Model

    Purpose: Education is the driving force of higher education institution(s) (HEIs) globally and is critical for student employability and practitioner recruitment. Yet, against this backdrop, research in the field is limited and hitherto, investigations into construction management curriculum development are scant. This research presents a foundational design specification for construction management programme curriculum development and aims to engender wider polemic debate as well as stimulate new insight into current higher education employability preparation practice. Methodology: The overarching epistemology adopts interpretivist, pragmatic and post-positivist philosophical stances to critically analyse extant literature, secondary data and primary data on the foundational skills/competencies of construction management education. Abductive reasoning forms the overarching basis of a new emergent curriculum model that maps interpersonal skills and highlights the critical foundational skills and competencies necessary. Findings: Research findings illustrate that construction management curriculum development lacks a cohesive community of practice and curriculum agenda. Importantly, it appears that although the modern construction manager needs an appreciation of digital technologies under the umbrella of Industry 4.0, their interpersonal skills and competencies were observed to far outweigh and exceed these. Premised upon these findings, the curriculum foundation model developed delineates the four key interpersonal skills and competencies construction management programmes should utilise for developing their curriculum. Originality: This novel research unearths the lack of a cohesive curriculum agenda within construction management education, highlights the importance of interpersonal skills and competencies within the role of construction manager and based upon this, presents a curriculum foundation model

    What does explainable AI explain?

    Machine Learning (ML) models are increasingly used in industry, as well as in scientific research and social contexts. Unfortunately, ML models provide only partial solutions to real-world problems, focusing on predictive performance in static environments. Problem aspects beyond prediction, such as robustness in employment, knowledge generation in science, or providing recourse recommendations to end-users, cannot be directly tackled with ML models. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to solve, or at least highlight, problem aspects beyond predictive performance through explanations. However, the field is still in its infancy, as fundamental questions such as “What are explanations?”, “What constitutes a good explanation?”, or “How relate explanation and understanding?” remain open. In this dissertation, I combine philosophical conceptual analysis and mathematical formalization to clarify a prerequisite of these difficult questions, namely what XAI explains: I point out that XAI explanations are either associative or causal and either aim to explain the ML model or the modeled phenomenon. The thesis is a collection of five individual research papers that all aim to clarify how different problems in XAI are related to these different “whats”. In Paper I, my co-authors and I illustrate how to construct XAI methods for inferring associational phenomenon relationships. Paper II directly relates to the first; we formally show how to quantify uncertainty of such scientific inferences for two XAI methods – partial dependence plots (PDP) and permutation feature importance (PFI). Paper III discusses the relationship between counterfactual explanations and adversarial examples; I argue that adversarial examples can be described as counterfactual explanations that alter the prediction but not the underlying target variable. In Paper IV, my co-authors and I argue that algorithmic recourse recommendations should help data-subjects improve their qualification rather than to game the predictor. In Paper V, we address general problems with model agnostic XAI methods and identify possible solutions

    Machine Learning Algorithm for the Scansion of Old Saxon Poetry

    Several scholars designed tools to perform the automatic scansion of poetry in many languages, but none of these tools deal with Old Saxon or Old English. This project aims to be a first attempt to create a tool for these languages. We implemented a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) model to perform the automatic scansion of Old Saxon and Old English poems. Since this model uses supervised learning, we manually annotated the Heliand manuscript, and we used the resulting corpus as labeled dataset to train the model. The evaluation of the performance of the algorithm reached a 97% for the accuracy and a 99% of weighted average for precision, recall and F1 Score. In addition, we tested the model with some verses from the Old Saxon Genesis and some from The Battle of Brunanburh, and we observed that the model predicted almost all Old Saxon metrical patterns correctly misclassified the majority of the Old English input verses
