Separation of line drawings based on split faces for 3D object reconstruction

© 2014 IEEE. Reconstructing 3D objects from single line drawings is often desirable in computer vision and graphics applications. If the line drawing of a complex 3D object is decomposed into primitives of simple shape, the object can be easily reconstructed. We propose an effective method to conduct the line drawing separation and turn a complex line drawing into parametric 3D models. This is achieved by recursively separating the line drawing using two types of split faces. Our experiments show that the proposed separation method can generate more basic and simple line drawings, and its combination with the example-based reconstruction can robustly recover wider range of complex parametric 3D objects than previous methods. This work was supported by grants from Science, Industry, Trade, and Information Technology Commission of Shenzhen Municipality (No. JC201005270378A), Guangdong Innovative Research Team Program (No. 201001D0104648280), Shenzhen Basic Research Program (JCYJ20120617114614438, JC201005270350A, JCYJ20120903092050890), Scientific Research Fund of Hunan Provincial Education Department (No. 13C073), Industrial Technology Research and Development Program of Hengyang Science and Technology Bureau (No.2013KG75), and the Construct Program of the Key Discipline in Hunan Provinc

    A knowledge-based system design/information tool

The objective of this effort was to develop a Knowledge Capture System (KCS) for the Integrated Test Facility (ITF) at the Dryden Flight Research Facility (DFRF). The DFRF is a NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) facility. This system was used to capture the design and implementation information for NASA's high angle-of-attack research vehicle (HARV), a modified F/A-18A. In particular, the KCS was used to capture specific characteristics of the design of the HARV fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control system (FCS). The KCS utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge-based system (KBS) technology. The KCS enables the user to capture the following characteristics of automated systems: the system design; the hardware (H/W) design and implementation; the software (S/W) design and implementation; and the utilities (electrical and hydraulic) design and implementation. A generic version of the KCS was developed which can be used to capture the design information for any automated system. The deliverable items for this project consist of the prototype generic KCS and an application, which captures selected design characteristics of the HARV FCS

Observed strategies in the freehand drawing of complex hierarchical diagrams

Chunk decomposition and assembly strategies have been found in the drawing of complex hierarchical diagrams (spe- cifically AVOW diagrams). Analysis of 40 diagrams pro- duced by five participants provided evidence for the strategies based on the duration of pauses between drawn elements. The strategies were initially discovered using a new visualiza- tion technique developed to allow the detailed examination of the sequential order of diagram drawing in conjunction with information about the durations of pauses associated with drawn elements

DeepSketch2Face: A Deep Learning Based Sketching System for 3D Face and Caricature Modeling

Face modeling has been paid much attention in the field of visual computing. There exist many scenarios, including cartoon characters, avatars for social media, 3D face caricatures as well as face-related art and design, where low-cost interactive face modeling is a popular approach especially among amateur users. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based sketching system for 3D face and caricature modeling. This system has a labor-efficient sketching interface, that allows the user to draw freehand imprecise yet expressive 2D lines representing the contours of facial features. A novel CNN based deep regression network is designed for inferring 3D face models from 2D sketches. Our network fuses both CNN and shape based features of the input sketch, and has two independent branches of fully connected layers generating independent subsets of coefficients for a bilinear face representation. Our system also supports gesture based interactions for users to further manipulate initial face models. Both user studies and numerical results indicate that our sketching system can help users create face models quickly and effectively. A significantly expanded face database with diverse identities, expressions and levels of exaggeration is constructed to promote further research and evaluation of face modeling techniques.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, to appear in SIGGRAPH 201

Perceiving ribs in single-view wireframe sketches of polyhedral shapes

As part of a strategy for creating 3D models of engineering objects from sketched input, we attempt to identify design features, geometrical structures within objects with a functional meaning. Our input is a 2D B-Rep derived from a single view sketch of a polyhedral shape. In this paper, we show how to use suitable cues to identify algorithmically two additive engineering design features, angular and linear ribs
