    Multi-objective heuristics applied to robot task planning for inspection plants

    Robotics are generally subject to stringent operational conditions that impose a high degree of criticality on the allocation of resources and the schedule of operations in mission planning. In this regard the so-called cost of a mission must be considered as an additional criterion when designing optimal task schedules within the mission at hand. Such a cost can be conceived as the impact of the mission on the robotic resources themselves, which range from the consumption of battery to other negative effects such as mechanic erosion. This manuscript focuses on this issue by presenting experimental results obtained over realistic scenarios of two heuristic solvers (MOHS and NSGA-II) aimed at efficiently scheduling tasks in robotic swarms that collaborate together to accomplish a mission. The heuristic techniques resort to a Random-Keys encoding strategy to represent the allocation of robots to tasks whereas the relative execution order of such tasks within the schedule of certain robots is computed based on the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Experimental results in three different deployment scenarios reveal the goodness of the proposed technique based on the Multi-objective Harmony Search algorithm (MOHS) in terms of Hypervolume (HV) and Coverage Rate (CR) performance indicators

    Algorithms and Methods for Designing and Scheduling Smart Manufacturing Systems

    This book, as a Special Issue, is a collection of some of the latest advancements in designing and scheduling smart manufacturing systems. The smart manufacturing concept is undoubtedly considered a paradigm shift in manufacturing technology. This conception is part of the Industry 4.0 strategy, or equivalent national policies, and brings new challenges and opportunities for the companies that are facing tough global competition. Industry 4.0 should not only be perceived as one of many possible strategies for manufacturing companies, but also as an important practice within organizations. The main focus of Industry 4.0 implementation is to combine production, information technology, and the internet. The presented Special Issue consists of ten research papers presenting the latest works in the field. The papers include various topics, which can be divided into three categories—(i) designing and scheduling manufacturing systems (seven articles), (ii) machining process optimization (two articles), (iii) digital insurance platforms (one article). Most of the mentioned research problems are solved in these articles by using genetic algorithms, the harmony search algorithm, the hybrid bat algorithm, the combined whale optimization algorithm, and other optimization and decision-making methods. The above-mentioned groups of articles are briefly described in this order in this book

    A research survey: review of flexible job shop scheduling techniques

    In the last 25 years, extensive research has been carried out addressing the flexible job shop scheduling (JSS) problem. A variety of techniques ranging from exact methods to hybrid techniques have been used in this research. The paper aims at presenting the development of flexible JSS and a consolidated survey of various techniques that have been employed since 1990 for problem resolution. The paper comprises evaluation of publications and research methods used in various research papers. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on performed survey results. A total of 404 distinct publications were found addressing the FJSSP. Some of the research papers presented more than one technique/algorithm to solve the problem that is categorized into 410 different applications. Selected time period of these research papers is between 1990 and February 2014. Articles were searched mainly on major databases such as SpringerLink, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, EBSCO, etc. and other web sources.     The Three-Objective Optimization Model of Flexible Workshop Scheduling Problem for Minimizing Work Completion Time, Work Delay Time, and Energy Consumption

    In recent years, the optimal design of the workshop schedule has received much attention with the increased competition in the business environment. As a strategic issue, designing a workshop schedule affects other decisions in the production chain. The purpose of this thesis is to design a three-objective mathematical model, with the objectives of minimizing work completion time, work delay time and energy consumption, considering the importance of businesses attention to reduce energy consumption in recent years. The developed model has been solved using exact solution methods of Weighted Sum (WS) and Epsilon Constraint (Ɛ) in small dimensions using GAMS software. These problems were also solved in large-scale problems with NSGA-II and SFLA meta-heuristic algorithms using MATLAB software in single-objective and multi-objective mode due to the NP-Hard nature of this group of large and real dimensional problems. The standard BRdata set of problems were used to investigate the algorithms performance in solving these problems so that it is possible to compare the algorithms performance of this research with the results of the algorithms used by other researchers. The obtained results show the relatively appropriate performance of these algorithms in solving these problems and also the much better and more optimal performance of the NSGA-II algorithm compared to the performance of the SFLA algorithm

    A multistage graph-based procedure for solving a just-in-time flexible job-shop scheduling problem with machine and time-dependent processing costs

    This paper deals with a new flexible job-shop scheduling problem in which the objective function to be minimised is the sum of the earliness and tardiness costs of the jobs and the costs of the operations required to perform the jobs, the latter depending on the machine and the time interval in which they are performed (as happens in many countries with the costs of electric power or those of manpower). We formalise the problem with a mathematical model and we propose a heuristic procedure that is based primarily on constructing a multistage graph and finding in it the shortest path from the source to the sink.     A bi-objective hybrid vibration damping optimization model for synchronous flow shop scheduling problems

    Flow shop scheduling deals with the determination of the optimal sequence of jobs processing on machines in a fixed order with the main objective consisting of minimizing the completion time of all jobs (makespan). This type of scheduling problem appears in many industrial and production planning applications. This study proposes a new bi-objective mixed-integer programming model for solving the synchronous flow shop scheduling problems with completion time. The objective functions are the total makespan and the sum of tardiness and earliness cost of blocks. At the same time, jobs are moved among machines through a synchronous transportation system with synchronized processing cycles. In each cycle, the existing jobs begin simultaneously, each on one of the machines, and after completion, wait until the last job is completed. Subsequently, all the jobs are moved concurrently to the next machine. Four algorithms, including non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA II), multi-objective simulated annealing (MOSA), multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), and multi-objective hybrid vibration-damping optimization (MOHVDO), are used to find a near-optimal solution for this NP-hard problem. In particular, the proposed hybrid VDO algorithm is based on the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and the integration of a neighborhood creation technique. MOHVDO and MOSA show the best performance among the other algorithms regarding objective functions and CPU Time, respectively. Thus, the results from running small-scale and medium-scale problems in MOHVDO and MOSA are compared with the solutions obtained from the epsilon-constraint method. In particular, the error percentage of MOHVDO’s objective functions is less than 2% compared to the epsilon-constraint method for all solved problems. Besides the specific results obtained in terms of performance and, hence, practical applicability, the proposed approach fills a considerable gap in the literature. Indeed, even though variants of the aforementioned meta-heuristic algorithms have been largely introduced in multi-objective environments, a simultaneous implementation of these algorithms as well as a compared study of their performance when solving flow shop scheduling problems has been so far overlooked
