    Operational Research: Methods and Applications

    Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes

    The dynamic vehicle routing problem: a metaheuristics based investigation

    The desire to optimise problems is as prevalent in today's society as it has ever been. The demand for increases in speed and efficiency is relentless and has resulted in the need for mathematical models to bear greater resemblance to real-life situations. This focus on increased realism has paved the way for new dynamic variants to classic optimisation problems. This thesis begins by considering the Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem. The basic premise of this routing problem is as follows a percentage of customers are known a priori, for which routes are constructed, further customers then arrive during the course of the working day and need to be incorporated into an evolving schedule. Literature has proposed a timeslot approach, whereby one partitions the working day into a series of smaller problems, that one is then required to solve in succession. This technique is used to produce a variety of metaheuristics based implementations, most noticeably Ant Colony Optimisation and Tabu Search. Consideration is then given to the Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows. This problem is similar to the Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem, but requires each customer to be serviced within a predefined period of the day. A metaheuristic approach adapted from the most successful algorithm implemented on the Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem is presented. Finally consideration is given to a time-based decomposition technique for the Vehicle Routing Problems with Time Windows (Large-Scale instances). This work makes use of the dynamic solution technique developed in the preceding work, and is used in conjunction with an Ant Colony Optimisation algorithm and a descent algorithm

    Controle de inércia não monotônico na otimização por enxame de partículas

    This work presents a mechanism to reduce the chances of the optimization process of nonlinear functions stagnating in local minima, using the meta-heuristic “Particle Swarm Optimization”. This mechanism is a nonmonotonic way to control the particle inertia, which is one of the factors responsible for movement during the optimization process. The experimental results were compared to the original PSO model aiming to show the potential to find a better solution related to the benchmark functions for complex problems. Finally, a comparison of both models was made in the adjustment of synaptic weights of a Multi-Layer Perceptron neural network obtaining interesting results.Keywords: swarm intelligence, Particle Swarm Optimization, artificial life, artificial neural network MLP.Este trabalho apresenta um mecanismo que possibilita a redução das chances do processo de otimização de funções não lineares estacionarem em mínimos locais, ao utilizarem a meta-heurística Otimização por Enxame de Partículas (PSO). Tal mecanismo é uma forma não monotônica de controlar a inércia da partícula, que é um dos fatores responsáveis pela movimentação desta durante o processo de otimização. Os resultados experimentais foram comparados com o modelo original da PSO padrão, a fim de mostrar o potencial para encontrar uma melhor solução em funções de benchmark, em problemas complexos. Ao final, uma comparação de ambos os modelos aplicados a um problema real para a regulagem de pesos sinápticos de uma rede neural do tipo Multi-Layer Perceptron foi feita, e as PSOs, por se tratarem de técnicas de propósito geral, mostraram resultados interessantes.Palavras-chave: inteligência de enxame, Otimização por Enxame de Partículas, vida artificial, rede neural artificial MLP

    Production Engineering and Management

    The annual International Conference on Production Engineering and Management takes place for the sixth time his year, and can therefore be considered a well - established event that is the result of the joint effort of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and the University of Trieste. The conference has been established as an annual meeting under the Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ by the two partner universities. The main goal of the conference is to provide an opportunity for students, researchers and professionals from Germany, Italy and abroad, to meet and exchange information, discuss experiences, specific practices and technical solutions used in planning, design and management of production and service systems. In addition, the conference is a platform aimed at presenting research projects, introducing young academics to the tradition of Symposiums and promoting the exchange of ideas between the industry and the academy. Especially the contributions of successful graduates of the Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ and those of other postgraduate researchers from several European countries have been enforced. This year’s special focus is on Direct Digital Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0, a topic of great interest for the global industry. The concept is spreading, but the actual solutions must be presented in order to highlight the practical benefits to industry and customers. Indeed, as Henning Banthien, Secretary General of the German ‘Plattform Industrie 4.0’ project office, has recently remarked, “Industry 4.0 requires a close alliance amongst the private sector, academia, politics and trade unions” in order to be “translated into practice and be implemented now”. PEM 2016 takes place between September 29 and 30, 2016 at the OWL University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo. The program is defined by the Organizing and Scientific Committees and clustered into scientific sessions covering topics of main interest and importance to the participants of the conference. The scientific sessions deal with technical and engineering issues, as well as management topics, and include contributions by researchers from academia and industry. The extended abstracts and full papers of the contributions underwent a double - blind review process. The 24 accepted presentations are assigned, according to their subject, to one of the following sessions: ‘Direct Digital Manufacturing in the Context of Industry 4.0’, ‘Industrial Engineering and Lean Management’, ‘Management Techniques and Methodologies’, ‘Wood Processing Technologies and Furniture Production’ and ‘Innovation Techniques and Methodologies
