    Urn Models and Beta-splines

    Get PDF
Some insight into the properties of beta-splines is gained by applying the techniques of urn models. Urn models are used to construct beta-spline basis functions and to derive the basic properties of these blending functions and the corresponding beta-spline curves. Only the simple notion of linear geometric continuity and with the most elementary beta parameter are outlined. Non-linear geometric continuity leads to additional beta parameters and to more complicated basis functions. Whether urn models can give us any insight into these higher order concepts still remains to be investigated

Gn blending multiple surfaces in polar coordinates

International audienceThis paper proposes a method of Gn blending multiple parametric surfaces in polar coordinates. It models the geometric continuity conditions of parametric surfaces in polar coordinates and presents a mechanism of converting a Cartesian parametric surface into its polar coordinate form. The basic idea is first to reparameterize the parametric blendees into the form of polar coordinates. Then they are blended simultaneously by a basis function in the complex domain. To extend its compatibility, we also propose a method of converting polar coordinate blending surface into N NURBS patches. One application of this technique is to fill N-sided holes. Examples are presented to show its feasibility and practicability

Discrete curvature approximations and segmentation of polyhedral surfaces

The segmentation of digitized data to divide a free form surface into patches is one of the key steps required to perform a reverse engineering process of an object. To this end, discrete curvature approximations are introduced as the basis of a segmentation process that lead to a decomposition of digitized data into areas that will help the construction of parametric surface patches. The approach proposed relies on the use of a polyhedral representation of the object built from the digitized data input. Then, it is shown how noise reduction, edge swapping techniques and adapted remeshing schemes can participate to different preparation phases to provide a geometry that highlights useful characteristics for the segmentation process. The segmentation process is performed with various approximations of discrete curvatures evaluated on the polyhedron produced during the preparation phases. The segmentation process proposed involves two phases: the identification of characteristic polygonal lines and the identification of polyhedral areas useful for a patch construction process. Discrete curvature criteria are adapted to each phase and the concept of invariant evaluation of curvatures is introduced to generate criteria that are constant over equivalent meshes. A description of the segmentation procedure is provided together with examples of results for free form object surfaces

Isogeometric analysis, as a generalization of the finite element method, employs spline methods to achieve the same representation for both geometric modeling and analysis purpose. Being one of possible tool in application to the isogeometric analysis, blending techniques provide strict locality and smoothness between elements. Motivated by these features, this thesis is devoted to the design and implementation of this alternative type of finite elements. This thesis combines topics in geometry, computer science and engineering. The research is mainly focused on the algorithmic aspects of the usage of the spline-based finite elements in the context of developing generalized methods for solving different model problems. The ability for conversion between different representations is significant for the modeling purpose. Methods for conversion between local and global representations are presented

Smooth Subdivision Surfaces: Mesh Blending and Local Interpolation

Subdivision surfaces are widely used in computer graphics and animation. Catmull-Clark subdivision (CCS) is one of the most popular subdivision schemes. It is capable of modeling and representing complex shape of arbitrary topology. Polar surface, working on a triangle-quad mixed mesh structure, is proposed to solve the inherent ripple problem of Catmull-Clark subdivision surface (CCSS). CCSS is known to be C1 continuous at extraordinary points. In this work, we present a G2 scheme at CCS extraordinary points. The work is done by revising CCS subdivision step with Extraordinary-Points-Avoidance model together with mesh blending technique which selects guiding control points from a set of regular sub-meshes (named dominative control meshes) iteratively at each subdivision level. A similar mesh blending technique is applied to Polar extraordinary faces of Polar surface as well. Both CCS and Polar subdivision schemes are approximating. Traditionally, one can obtain a CCS limit surface to interpolate given data mesh by iteratively solving a global linear system. In this work, we present a universal interpolating scheme for all quad subdivision surfaces, called Bezier Crust. Bezier Crust is a specially selected bi-quintic Bezier surface patch. With Bezier Crust, one can obtain a high quality interpolating surface on CCSS by parametrically adding CCSS and Bezier Crust. We also show that with a triangle/quad conversion process one can apply Bezier Crust on Polar surfaces as well. We further show that Bezier Crust can be used to generate hollowed 3D objects for applications in rapid prototyping. An alternative interpolating approach specifically designed for CCSS is developed. This new scheme, called One-Step Bi-cubic Interpolation, uses bicubic patches only. With lower degree polynomial, this scheme is appropriate for interpolating large-scale data sets. In sum, this work presents our research on improving surface smoothness at extraordinary points of both CCS and Polar surfaces and present two local interpolating approaches on approximating subdivision schemes. All examples included in this work show that the results of our research works on subdivision surfaces are of high quality and appropriate for high precision engineering and graphics usage

A new surface joining technique for the design of shoe lasts

    Get PDF
The footwear industry is a traditional craft sector, where technological advances are difficult to implement owing to the complexity of the processes being carried out, and the level of precision demanded by most of them. The shoe last joining operation is one clear example, where two halves from different lasts are put together, following a specifically traditional process, to create a new one. Existing surface joining techniques analysed in this paper are not well adapted to shoe last design and production processes, which makes their implementation in the industry difficult. This paper presents an alternative surface joining technique, inspired by the traditional work of lastmakers. This way, lastmakers will be able to easily adapt to the new tool and make the most out of their know-how. The technique is based on the use of curve networks that are created on the surfaces to be joined, instead of using discrete data. Finally, a series of joining tests are presented, in which real lasts were successfully joined using a commercial last design software. The method has shown to be valid, efficient, and feasible within the sector

Two surface generation methods are presented, one for connecting two surfaces with C2 continuity while matching also two prescribed border lines on the free sides of the gap, and one for G1 filling a three-sided hole in a special case. The surfaces are generated as convex combination of surface and curve constituents with an appropriate correction function, and are represented in parametric form.

Fast Isogeometric Boundary Element Method based on Independent Field Approximation

An isogeometric boundary element method for problems in elasticity is presented, which is based on an independent approximation for the geometry, traction and displacement field. This enables a flexible choice of refinement strategies, permits an efficient evaluation of geometry related information, a mixed collocation scheme which deals with discontinuous tractions along non-smooth boundaries and a significant reduction of the right hand side of the system of equations for common boundary conditions. All these benefits are achieved without any loss of accuracy compared to conventional isogeometric formulations. The system matrices are approximated by means of hierarchical matrices to reduce the computational complexity for large scale analysis. For the required geometrical bisection of the domain, a strategy for the evaluation of bounding boxes containing the supports of NURBS basis functions is presented. The versatility and accuracy of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by convergence studies showing optimal rates and real world examples in two and three dimensions.Comment: 32 pages, 27 figure
