New H∞ control design for polytopic systems with mixed time-varying delays in state and input
This paper concerns with the problem of state-feedback H∞ control design for a class of linear systems with polytopic uncertainties and mixed time-varying delays in state and input. Our approach can be described as follows. We first construct a state-feedback controller based on the idea of parameter-dependent controller design. By constructing a new parameter-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF), we then derive new delay-dependent conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities ensuring the exponential stability of the corresponding closed-loop system with a H∞ disturbance attenuation level. The effectiveness and applicability of the obtained results are demonstrated by practical examples

Both cases of differentiable and nondifferentiable time-delays are considered, and the convex polytopic description is utilized to characterize the genetic network model uncertainties. By using a Lyapunov functional approach and linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques, the stability criteria for the uncertain delayed genetic networks are established in the form of LMIs, which can be readily verified by using standard numerical software. An important feature of the results reported here is that all the stability conditions are dependent on the upper and lower bounds of the delays, which is made possible by using up-to-date techniques for achieving delay dependence. Another feature of the results lies in that a novel Lyapunov functional dependent on the uncertain parameters is utilized, which renders the results to be potentially less conservative than those obtained via a fixed Lyapunov functional for the entire uncertainty domain. A genetic network example is employed to illustrate the applicability and usefulness of the developed theoretical results

Robust filtering for stochastic genetic regulatory networks with time-varying delay
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link - Copyright 2009 Elsevier LtdThis paper addresses the robust filtering problem for a class of linear genetic regulatory networks (GRNs) with stochastic disturbances, parameter uncertainties and time delays. The parameter uncertainties are assumed to reside in a polytopic region, the stochastic disturbance is state-dependent described by a scalar Brownian motion, and the time-varying delays enter into both the translation process and the feedback regulation process. We aim to estimate the true concentrations of mRNA and protein by designing a linear filter such that, for all admissible time delays, stochastic disturbances as well as polytopic uncertainties, the augmented state estimation dynamics is exponentially mean square stable with an expected decay rate. A delay-dependent linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is first developed to derive sufficient conditions that guarantee the exponential stability of the augmented dynamics, and then the filter gains are parameterized in terms of the solution to a set of LMIs. Note that LMIs can be easily solved by using standard software packages. A simulation example is exploited in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design procedures. This work was supported in part by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) of the U.K. under Grants BB/C506264/1 and 100/EGM17735, an International Joint Project sponsored by the Royal Society of the U.K., the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong under Grant HKU 7031/06P, the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 60804028, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

The missing-measurement phenomenon is assumed to occur in a random way, and the missing probability is time-varying with securable upper and lower bounds that can be measured in real time. The multiplicative noise is a state-dependent scalar Gaussian white-noise sequence with known variance. The addressed gain-scheduled filtering problem is concerned with the design of a filter such that, for the admissible random missing measurements, nonlinear parameters, and external noise disturbances, the error dynamics is exponentially mean-square stable. The desired filter is equipped with time-varying gains based primarily on the time-varying missing probability and is therefore less conservative than the traditional filter with fixed gains. It is shown that the filter parameters can be derived in terms of the measurable probability via the semidefinite program method. This work was supported in part by the Leverhulme Trust of the U.K., the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the U.K. under Grant GR/S27658/01, the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61028008, 61074016 and 60974030, the Shanghai Natural

Networked PID control design : a pseudo-probabilistic robust approach
Networked Control Systems (NCS) are feedback/feed-forward control systems where control components (sensors, actuators and controllers) are distributed across a common communication network. In NCS, there exist network-induced random delays in each channel. This paper proposes a method to compensate the effects of these delays for the design and tuning of PID controllers. The control design is formulated as a constrained optimization problem and the controller stability and robustness criteria are incorporated as design constraints. The design is based on a polytopic description of the system using a Poisson pdf distribution of the delay. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method

In the system under investigation, all the system parameters are allowed to be time-varying, the parameter uncertainties are assumed to be of the polytopic type, and the stochastic nonlinearities are described by statistical means which can cover several classes of well-studied nonlinearities. The purpose of the problem addressed is to design an output feedback controller, over a given finite-horizon, such that the H∞ disturbance attenuation level is guaranteed for the nonlinear stochastic polytopic system in the presence of saturated sensor and actuator outputs. Sufficient conditions are first established for the robust H∞ performance through intensive stochastic analysis, and then a recursive linear matrix inequality (RLMI) approach is employed to design the desired output feedback controller achieving the prescribed H∞ disturbance rejection level. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed controller design scheme. This work was supported under Australian Research Council’s Discovery Projects funding

Stochastic model predictive control for constrained networked control systems with random time delay
In this paper the continuous time stochastic constrained optimal control problem is formulated for the class of networked control systems assuming that time delays follow a discrete-time, finite Markov chain . Polytopic overapproximations of the system's trajectories are employed to produce a polyhedral inner approximation of the non-convex constraint set resulting from imposing the constraints in continuous time. The problem is cast in a Markov jump linear systems (MJLS) framework and a stochastic MPC controller is calculated explicitly, oine, coupling dynamic programming with parametric piecewise quadratic (PWQ) optimization. The calculated control law leads to stochastic stability of the closed loop system, in the mean square sense and respects the state and input constraints in continuous time

Robust H∞ filtering for networked systems with multiple state delays
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2007 Taylor & Francis Ltd.In this paper, a new robust H∞ filter design problem is studied for a class of networked systems with multiple state-delays. Two kinds of incomplete measurements, namely, measurements with random delays and measurements with stochastic missing phenomenon, are simultaneously considered. Such incomplete measurements are induced by the limited bandwidth of communication networks, and are modelled as a linear function of a certain set of indicator functions that depend on the same stochastic variable. Attention is focused on the analysis and design problems of a full-order robust H∞ filter such that, for all admissible parameter uncertainties and all possible incomplete measurements, the filtering error dynamics is exponentially mean-square stable and a prescribed H∞ attenuation level is guaranteed. Some recently reported methodologies, such as delay-dependent and parameter-dependent stability analysis approaches, are employed to obtain less conservative results. Sufficient conditions, which are dependent on the occurrence probability of both the random sensor delay and missing measurement, are established for the existence of the desired filters in terms of certain linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). When these LMIs are feasible, the explicit expression of the desired filter can also be characterized. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed design method. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 60574084, the National 863 Project of China under Grant 2006AA04Z428, and the National 973 Program of China under Grant 2002CB312200
A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Finally, safety of convex systems is discussed by describing popular techniques for fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control (FTC).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
