Expanding window fountain codes for unequal error protection
A novel approach to provide unequal error protection (UEP) using rateless codes over erasure channels, named Expanding Window Fountain (EWF) codes, is developed and discussed. EWF codes use a windowing technique rather than a weighted (non-uniform) selection of input symbols to achieve UEP property. The windowing approach introduces additional parameters in the UEP rateless code design, making it more general and flexible than the weighted approach. Furthermore, the windowing approach provides better performance of UEP scheme, which is confirmed both theoretically and experimentally. © 2009 IEEE

Quality constraint and rate-distortion optimization for predictive image coders
International audienceNext generations of image and video coding methods should of course be efficient in terms of compression, but also propose advanced functionalities. Among these functionalities such as scalability, lossy and lossless coding, data protection, Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) and Rate Control (RC) are key issues. RDO aims at optimizing compression performances, while RC mechanism enables to exactly compress at a given rate. A less common functionality than RC, but certainly more helpful, is Quality Control (QC): the constraint is here given by the quality. In this paper, we introduce a joint solution for RDO and QC applied to a still image codec called Locally Adaptive Resolution (LAR), providing scalability both in resolution and SNR and based on a multi-resolution structure. The technique does not require any additional encoding pass. It relies on a modeling and estimation of the prediction errors obtained in an early work. First, quality constraint is applied and propagated through the whole resolution levels called pyramid. Then, the quantization parameters are deduced considering inter and intra pyramid level relationships. Results show that performances of the proposed method are very close to an exhaustive search solution
Control of Multiple Remote Servers for Quality-Fair Delivery of Multimedia Contents
This paper proposes a control scheme for the quality-fair delivery of several
encoded video streams to mobile users sharing a common wireless resource. Video
quality fairness, as well as similar delivery delays are targeted among
streams. The proposed controller is implemented within some aggregator located
near the bottleneck of the network. The transmission rate among streams is
adapted based on the quality of the already encoded and buffered packets in the
aggregator. Encoding rate targets are evaluated by the aggregator and fed back
to each remote video server (fully centralized solution), or directly evaluated
by each server in a distributed way (partially distributed solution). Each
encoding rate target is adjusted for each stream independently based on the
corresponding buffer level or buffering delay in the aggregator. Communication
delays between the servers and the aggregator are taken into account. The
transmission and encoding rate control problems are studied with a
control-theoretic perspective. The system is described with a multi-input
multi-output model. Proportional Integral (PI) controllers are used to adjust
the video quality and control the aggregator buffer levels. The system
equilibrium and stability properties are studied. This provides guidelines for
choosing the parameters of the PI controllers. Experimental results show the
convergence of the proposed control system and demonstrate the improvement in
video quality fairness compared to a classical transmission rate fair streaming
solution and to a utility max-min fair approach

Error resilient video transcoding for robust inter-network communications using GPRS
A novel fully comprehensive mobile video communications
system is proposed in this paper. This system exploits
the useful rate management features of the video transcoders and
combines them with error resilience for transmissions of coded
video streams over general packet radio service (GPRS) mobileaccess
networks. The error-resilient video transcoding operation
takes place at a centralized point, referred to as a video proxy,
which provides the necessary output transmission rates with the
required amount of robustness. With the use of this proposed
algorithm, error resilience can be added to an already compressed
video stream at an intermediate stage at the edge of two or more
different networks through two resilience schemes, namely the
adaptive intra refresh (AIR) and feedback control signaling (FCS)
methods. Both resilience tools impose an output rate increase
which can also be prevented with the proposed novel technique in
this paper. Thus, an error-resilient video transcoding scheme is
presented to give robust video outputs at near target transmission
rates that only require the same number of GPRS timeslots as
the nonresilient schemes. Moreover, an ultimate robustness is
also accomplished with the combination of the two resilience
algorithms at the video proxy. Extensive computer simulations
demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system
Predictive Encoder and Buffer Control for Statistical Multiplexing of Multimedia Contents
International audienceStatistical multiplexing of video contents aims at transmitting several variable bit rate (VBR) encoded video streams over a band-limited channel. Rate-distortion (RD) models for the encoded streams are often used to control the video encoders. Buffering at the output of encoders is one of the several techniques used to smooth out the fluctuating bit rate of compressed video due to variations in the activity of video contents. In this paper, a statistical multiplexer is proposed where a closed-loop control of both video encoders and buffers is performed jointly. First, a predictive joint video encoder controller accounting for minimum quality, fairness, and smoothness constraints is considered. Second, all buffers are controlled simultaneously to regulate the buffering delays. This delay is adjusted according to a reference delay constraint. The main idea is to update the encoding rate for each video unit according to the average level of the buffers, to maximize the quality of each program and effectively use the available channel rate. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme yields a smooth and fair video quality among programs thanks to the predictive control. A similar buffering delay for all programs and an efficient use of the available channel rate are ensured thanks to the buffer management and to the predictive closed-loop control
Evaluation of cross-layer reliability mechanisms for satellite digital multimedia broadcast
This paper presents a study of some reliability mechanisms which may be put at work in the context of Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (SDMB) to mobile devices such as handheld phones. These mechanisms include error correcting codes, interleaving at the physical layer, erasure codes at
intermediate layers and error concealment on the video decoder. The evaluation is made on a realistic satellite channel and takes into account practical constraints such as the maximum zapping time and the user mobility at several speeds. The evaluation is done by simulating different scenarii with complete protocol stacks. The simulations indicate that, under the assumptions taken here, the scenario using highly compressed video protected by erasure codes at intermediate layers seems to be the best solution

Lexicographic Bit Allocation for MPEG Video
We consider the problem of allocating bits among pictures in an MPEG video coder to equalize
the visual quality of the coded pictures, while meeting bu er and channel constraints imposed by
the MPEG Video Bu ering Veri er. We address this problem within a framework that consists of
three components: 1) a bit production model for the input pictures, 2) a set of bit-rate constraints
imposed by the Video Bu ering Veri er, and 3) a novel lexicographic criterion for optimality.
Under this framework, we derive simple necessary and su cient conditions for optimality that lead
to e cient algorithms
