    Some Considerations about Modern Database Machines

    Optimizing the two computing resources of any computing system - time and space - has al-ways been one of the priority objectives of any database. A current and effective solution in this respect is the computer database. Optimizing computer applications by means of database machines has been a steady preoccupation of researchers since the late seventies. Several information technologies have revolutionized the present information framework. Out of these, those which have brought a major contribution to the optimization of the databases are: efficient handling of large volumes of data (Data Warehouse, Data Mining, OLAP – On Line Analytical Processing), the improvement of DBMS – Database Management Systems facilities through the integration of the new technologies, the dramatic increase in computing power and the efficient use of it (computer networks, massive parallel computing, Grid Computing and so on).     A Survey on Array Storage, Query Languages, and Systems

    Since scientific investigation is one of the most important providers of massive amounts of ordered data, there is a renewed interest in array data processing in the context of Big Data. To the best of our knowledge, a unified resource that summarizes and analyzes array processing research over its long existence is currently missing. In this survey, we provide a guide for past, present, and future research in array processing. The survey is organized along three main topics. Array storage discusses all the aspects related to array partitioning into chunks. The identification of a reduced set of array operators to form the foundation for an array query language is analyzed across multiple such proposals. Lastly, we survey real systems for array processing. The result is a thorough survey on array data storage and processing that should be consulted by anyone interested in this research topic, independent of experience level. The survey is not complete though. We greatly appreciate pointers towards any work we might have forgotten to mention.Comment: 44 page

    Cloud BI: Future of business intelligence in the Cloud

    In self-hosted environments it was feared that business intelligence (BI) will eventually face a resource crunch situation due to the never ending expansion of data warehouses and the online analytical processing (OLAP) demands on the underlying networking. Cloud computing has instigated a new hope for future prospects of BI. However, how will BI be implemented on Cloud and how will the traffic and demand profile look like? This research attempts to answer these key questions in regards to taking BI to the Cloud. The Cloud hosting of BI has been demonstrated with the help of a simulation on OPNET comprising a Cloud model with multiple OLAP application servers applying parallel query loads on an array of servers hosting relational databases. The simulation results reflected that extensible parallel processing of database servers on the Cloud can efficiently process OLAP application demands on Cloud computing

    High Quality Analytics with Poor Quality Data

    Poor data quality has often been cited as the single most common problem hindering the deployment of Business Intelligence (BI) solutions. This problem is compounded when analytics is performed in non-conventional BI areas such as forestry and silviculture. In this paper, we describe a methodology to perform BI analytics on data that was never collected to be used for this purpose. We show that data of such low and poor quality can be transformed and loaded into the data warehouse which is then used for high quality reporting

    Resource allocation for query processing in grid systems: A survey

However, the main characteristics of grid systems such as dynamicity, large size and heterogeneity, bring new problems to the query processing domain such as resource discovery and resource allocation. In this paper, we provide a survey related to resource allocation methods for query processing In data grid systems. We provide a classification for existing studies considering their approaches to the resource allocation problem.
