Automated multigravity assist trajectory planning with a modified ant colony algorithm
The paper presents an approach to transcribe a multigravity assist trajectory design problem into an integrated planning and scheduling problem. A modified Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is then used to generate optimal plans corresponding to optimal sequences of gravity assists and deep space manoeuvers to reach a given destination. The modified Ant Colony Algorithm is based on a hybridization between standard ACO paradigms and a tabu-based heuristic. The scheduling algorithm is integrated into the trajectory model to provide a fast time-allocation of the events along the trajectory. The approach demonstrated to be very effective on a number of real trajectory design problems
Multi-objective ant colony optimization for the twin-screw configuration problem
The Twin-Screw Configuration Problem (TSCP) consists in identifying the
best location of a set of available screw elements along a screw shaft. Due to its
combinatorial nature, it can be seen as a sequencing problem. In addition,
different conflicting objectives may have to be considered when defining a
screw configuration and, thus, it is usually tackled as a multi-objective
optimization problem. In this research, a multi-objective ant colony
optimization (MOACO) algorithm was adapted to deal with the TSCP. The
influence of different parameters of the MOACO algorithm was studied and its
performance was compared with that of a previously proposed multi-objective
evolutionary algorithm and a two-phase local search algorithm. The
experimental results showed that MOACO algorithms have a significant

A memetic ant colony optimization algorithm for the dynamic travelling salesman problem
Copyright @ Springer-Verlag 2010.Ant colony optimization (ACO) has been successfully applied for combinatorial optimization problems, e.g., the travelling salesman problem (TSP), under stationary environments. In this paper, we consider the dynamic TSP (DTSP), where cities are replaced by new ones during the execution of the algorithm. Under such environments, traditional ACO algorithms face a serious challenge: once they converge, they cannot adapt efficiently to environmental changes. To improve the performance of ACO on the DTSP, we investigate a hybridized ACO with local search (LS), called Memetic ACO (M-ACO) algorithm, which is based on the population-based ACO (P-ACO) framework and an adaptive inver-over operator, to solve the DTSP. Moreover, to address premature convergence, we introduce random immigrants to the population of M-ACO when identical ants are stored. The simulation experiments on a series of dynamic environments generated from a set of benchmark TSP instances show that LS is beneficial for ACO algorithms when applied on the DTSP, since it achieves better performance than other traditional ACO and P-ACO algorithms.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/01 and Grant EP/E060722/02

Swarm Intelligence generally refers to a problem-solving ability that emerges from the
interaction of simple information-processing units. The concept of Swarm suggests multiplicity,
distribution, stochasticity, randomness, and messiness. The concept of Intelligence suggests that
