The PISCES 2 parallel programming environment
PISCES 2 is a programming environment for scientific and engineering computations on MIMD parallel computers. It is currently implemented on a flexible FLEX/32 at NASA Langley, a 20 processor machine with both shared and local memories. The environment provides an extended Fortran for applications programming, a configuration environment for setting up a run on the parallel machine, and a run-time environment for monitoring and controlling program execution. This paper describes the overall design of the system and its implementation on the FLEX/32. Emphasis is placed on several novel aspects of the design: the use of a carefully defined virtual machine, programmer control of the mapping of virtual machine to actual hardware, forces for medium-granularity parallelism, and windows for parallel distribution of data. Evolving Large-Scale Data Stream Analytics based on Scalable PANFIS
Many distributed machine learning frameworks have recently been built to
speed up the large-scale data learning process. However, most distributed
machine learning used in these frameworks still uses an offline algorithm model
which cannot cope with the data stream problems. In fact, large-scale data are
mostly generated by the non-stationary data stream where its pattern evolves
over time. To address this problem, we propose a novel Evolving Large-scale
Data Stream Analytics framework based on a Scalable Parsimonious Network based
on Fuzzy Inference System (Scalable PANFIS), where the PANFIS evolving
algorithm is distributed over the worker nodes in the cloud to learn
large-scale data stream. Scalable PANFIS framework incorporates the active
learning (AL) strategy and two model fusion methods. The AL accelerates the
distributed learning process to generate an initial evolving large-scale data
stream model (initial model), whereas the two model fusion methods aggregate an
initial model to generate the final model. The final model represents the
update of current large-scale data knowledge which can be used to infer future
data. Extensive experiments on this framework are validated by measuring the
accuracy and running time of four combinations of Scalable PANFIS and other
Spark-based built in algorithms. The results indicate that Scalable PANFIS with
AL improves the training time to be almost two times faster than Scalable
PANFIS without AL. The results also show both rule merging and the voting
mechanisms yield similar accuracy in general among Scalable PANFIS algorithms
and they are generally better than Spark-based algorithms. In terms of running
time, the Scalable PANFIS training time outperforms all Spark-based algorithms
when classifying numerous benchmark datasets.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

Computer-aided programming for multiprocessing systems
As both the number of processors and the complexity of problems to be solved increase, programming multiprocessing systems becomes more difficult and error-prone. This report discusses parallel models of computation and tools for computer-aided programming (CAP). Program development tools are necessary since programmers are not able to develop complex parallel programs efficiently. In particular, a CAP tool, named Hypertool, is described here. It performs scheduling and handles the communication primitive insertion automatically so that many errors are eliminated. It also generates the performance estimates and other program quality measures to help programmers in improving their algorithms and programs. Experiments have shown that up to a 300% performance improvement can be achieved by computer-aided programming
A visual programming environment for the Navier-Stokes computer
The Navier-Stokes computer is a high-performance, reconfigurable, pipelined machine designed to solve large computational fluid dynamics problems. Due to the complexity of the architecture, development of effective, high-level language compilers for the system appears to be a very difficult task. Consequently, a visual programming methodology has been developed which allows users to program the system at an architectural level by constructing diagrams of the pipeline configuration. These schematic program representations can then be checked for validity and automatically translated into machine code. The visual environment is illustrated by using a prototype graphical editor to program an example problem

Improving parallel program performance using critical path analysis
A programming tool that performs analysis of critical paths for parallel programs has been developed. This tool determines the critical path for the program as scheduled onto a parallel computer with P processing elements, the critical path for the program expressed as a data flow graph (when maximal parallelism can be expressed), and the minimum number of processing elements (P_opt) needed to obtain maximum program speedup. Experiments were performed using several versions of a Gaussian elimination program to examine how speedup varied with changes in granularity and critical path length. These experiments showed that when the available numer of processing elements P < P_opt, increasing granularity improved program speedup more than reducing (the data flow graph's) critical path length, whereas when P ≥ P_opt, increasing granularity degraded program speedup while reducing critical path length improved program speedup
A simple approach to distributed objects in prolog
We present the design of a distributed object system for Prolog, based on adding remote execution and distribution capabilities to a previously existing object system. Remote execution brings RPC into a Prolog system, and its semantics is easy to express in terms of well-known Prolog builtins. The final distributed object design features state mobility and user-transparent network behavior. We sketch an implementation which provides distributed garbage collection and some degree of tolerance to network failures. We provide a preliminary study of the overhead of the communication mechanism for some test cases
