Parallel on-line parsing in constant time per word
An on-line parser processes each word as soon as it is typed by the user, without waiting for the end of the sentence. Thus, in an interactive system, a sentence will be parsed almost immediately after the last word has been presented.\ud

The complexity of an on-line parser is determined by the resources needed for the analysis of a single word, as it is assumed that previous words have been processed already. Sequential parsing algorithms like CYK or Earley need O(n2) time for the nth word. A parallel implementation in O(n) time on O(n) processors is straightforward. In this paper a novel parallel on-line parser is presented that needs O(1) time on O(n2) processors
MPI-Vector-IO: Parallel I/O and Partitioning for Geospatial Vector Data
In recent times, geospatial datasets are growing in terms of size, complexity and heterogeneity. High performance systems are needed to analyze such data to produce actionable insights in an efficient manner. For polygonal a.k.a vector datasets, operations such as I/O, data partitioning, communication, and load balancing becomes challenging in a cluster environment. In this work, we present MPI-Vector-IO 1 , a parallel I/O library that we have designed using MPI-IO specifically for partitioning and reading irregular vector data formats such as Well Known Text. It makes MPI aware of spatial data, spatial primitives and provides support for spatial data types embedded within collective computation and communication using MPI message-passing library. These abstractions along with parallel I/O support are useful for parallel Geographic Information System (GIS) application development on HPC platforms
Automatic Structural Scene Digitalization
In this paper, we present an automatic system for the analysis and labeling
of structural scenes, floor plan drawings in Computer-aided Design (CAD)
format. The proposed system applies a fusion strategy to detect and recognize
various components of CAD floor plans, such as walls, doors, windows and other
ambiguous assets. Technically, a general rule-based filter parsing method is
fist adopted to extract effective information from the original floor plan.
Then, an image-processing based recovery method is employed to correct
information extracted in the first step. Our proposed method is fully automatic
and real-time. Such analysis system provides high accuracy and is also
evaluated on a public website that, on average, archives more than ten
thousands effective uses per day and reaches a relatively high satisfaction
rate.Comment: paper submitted to PloS On
Connectionist natural language parsing
The key developments of two decades of connectionist parsing are reviewed. Connectionist parsers are assessed according to their ability to learn to represent syntactic structures from examples automatically, without being presented with symbolic grammar rules. This review also considers the extent to which connectionist parsers offer computational models of human sentence processing and provide plausible accounts of psycholinguistic data. In considering these issues, special attention is paid to the level of realism, the nature of the modularity, and the type of processing that is to be found in a wide range of parsers
Learning Fault-tolerant Speech Parsing with SCREEN
This paper describes a new approach and a system SCREEN for fault-tolerant
speech parsing. SCREEEN stands for Symbolic Connectionist Robust EnterprisE for
Natural language. Speech parsing describes the syntactic and semantic analysis
of spontaneous spoken language. The general approach is based on incremental
immediate flat analysis, learning of syntactic and semantic speech parsing,
parallel integration of current hypotheses, and the consideration of various
forms of speech related errors. The goal for this approach is to explore the
parallel interactions between various knowledge sources for learning
incremental fault-tolerant speech parsing. This approach is examined in a
system SCREEN using various hybrid connectionist techniques. Hybrid
connectionist techniques are examined because of their promising properties of
inherent fault tolerance, learning, gradedness and parallel constraint
integration. The input for SCREEN is hypotheses about recognized words of a
spoken utterance potentially analyzed by a speech system, the output is
hypotheses about the flat syntactic and semantic analysis of the utterance. In
this paper we focus on the general approach, the overall architecture, and
examples for learning flat syntactic speech parsing. Different from most other
speech language architectures SCREEN emphasizes an interactive rather than an
autonomous position, learning rather than encoding, flat analysis rather than
in-depth analysis, and fault-tolerant processing of phonetic, syntactic and
semantic knowledge.Comment: 6 pages, postscript, compressed, uuencoded to appear in Proceedings

Parsing with parallelism : a spreading-activation model of inference processing during text understanding
The past decade of reseatch in Natural Language Processing has universally recognized that, since natural language input is almost always ambiguous with respect to its pragmatic implications, its syntactic parse, and even its lexical analysis (i.e., choice of correct word-sense for an ambiguous word), processing natural language input requires decisions about word meanings, syntactic structure, and pragmatic inferences. The lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic levels of inferencing are not as disparate as they have often been treated in both psychological and artificial intelligence research. In fact, these three levels of analysis interact to form a joint interpretation of text.ATLAST (A Three-level Language Analysis SysTem) is an implemented integration of human language understanding at the lexical, the syntactic, and the pragmatic levels. For psychological validity, ATLAST is based on results of experiments with human subjects. The ATLAST model uses a new architecture which was developed to incorporate three features: spreading activation memory, two-stage syntax, and parallel processing of syntax and semantics. It is also a new framework within which to interpret and tackle unsolved problems through implementation and experimentation
