    A real-time asymmetric multiprocessor-reconfigurable system-on-chip architecture

    We propose an asymmetric multi-processor SoC architecture, featuring a master CPU running uClinux, and multiple loosely-coupled slave CPUs running real-time threads assigned by the master CPU. Real-time SoC architectures often demand a compromise between a generic platform for different applications, and application-specific customizations to achieve performance requirements. Our proposed architecture offers a generic platform running a conventional embedded operating system providing a traditional software-oriented development approach, while multiple slave CPUs act as a dedicated independent real-time threads execution unit running in parallel of master CPU to achieve performance requirements. In this paper, the architecture is described, including the application / threading development environment. The performance of the architecture with several standard benchmark routines is also analysed

    A Parallel Branch and Bound Algorithm for Integer Linear Programming Models

    A parallel branch and bound algorithm is developed for use with MIMD computers to study the efficiency of parallel processors on general integer linear programming problems. The Haldi and IBM test problems and a System Design model are used in the implementation of the algorithm. Initially the algorithm solves the Haldi and IBM test problems on a single processor computer which simulates a multiple processor computer. The algorithm is then implemented on the Denelcor HEP multiprocessor using two of the IBM problems to compare the results of the simulation to the results using an MIMD computer. Finally the algorithm is implemented on the HEP using the System Design model to show a case in which the number of pivots decreases as the number of processes are increased from seven to the process limit of sixteen. In general, it is shown that super linear efficiency can be achieved using multiple processors

    Massively Parallel Computation Using Graphics Processors with Application to Optimal Experimentation in Dynamic Control

    The rapid increase in the performance of graphics hardware, coupled with recent improvements in its programmability has lead to its adoption in many non-graphics applications, including wide variety of scientific computing fields. At the same time, a number of important dynamic optimal policy problems in economics are athirst of computing power to help overcome dual curses of complexity and dimensionality. We investigate if computational economics may benefit from new tools on a case study of imperfect information dynamic programming problem with learning and experimentation trade-off that is, a choice between controlling the policy target and learning system parameters. Specifically, we use a model of active learning and control of linear autoregression with unknown slope that appeared in a variety of macroeconomic policy and other contexts. The endogeneity of posterior beliefs makes the problem difficult in that the value function need not be convex and policy function need not be continuous. This complication makes the problem a suitable target for massively-parallel computation using graphics processors. Our findings are cautiously optimistic in that new tools let us easily achieve a factor of 15 performance gain relative to an implementation targeting single-core processors and thus establish a better reference point on the computational speed vs. coding complexity trade-off frontier. While further gains and wider applicability may lie behind steep learning barrier, we argue that the future of many computations belong to parallel algorithms anyway.Graphics Processing Units, CUDA programming, Dynamic programming, Learning, Experimentation

Also documented is the work done in investigating techniques of high speed (5 Mbps) digital data transmission in the data bus environment.     The current capabilities of LSI techniques for speed and reliability, plus the possibilities of assembling large configurations of LSI logic and storage elements, have demanded the study of multiprocessors and multiprocessing techniques, problems, and potentialities. Evaluated are three previous systems studies for a space ultrareliable modular computer multiprocessing system, and a new multiprocessing system is proposed that is flexibly configured with up to four central processors, four 1/0 processors, and 16 main memory units, plus auxiliary memory and peripheral devices. This multiprocessor system features a multilevel interrupt, qualified S/360 compatibility for ground-based generation of programs, virtual memory management of a storage hierarchy through 1/0 processors, and multiport access to multiple and shared memory units
