    Online Data Structures in External Memory

    The original publication is available at www.springerlink.comThe data sets for many of today's computer applications are too large to t within the computer's internal memory and must instead be stored on external storage devices such as disks. A major performance bottleneck can be the input/output communication (or I/O) between the external and internal memories. In this paper we discuss a variety of online data structures for external memory, some very old and some very new, such as hashing (for dictionaries), B-trees (for dictionaries and 1-D range search), bu er trees (for batched dynamic problems), interval trees with weight-balanced B-trees (for stabbing queries), priority search trees (for 3-sided 2-D range search), and R-trees and other spatial structures. We also discuss several open problems along the way

    The 28th International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2021) was planned to take place in Klagenfurt, Austria, but had to move to an online conference due to the insecurities and restrictions caused by the pandemic. Since its frst edition in 1994, TIME Symposium is quite unique in the panorama of the scientifc conferences as its main goal is to bring together researchers from distinct research areas involving the management and representation of temporal data as well as the reasoning about temporal aspects of information. Moreover, TIME Symposium aims to bridge theoretical and applied research, as well as to serve as an interdisciplinary forum for exchange among researchers from the areas of artifcial intelligence, database management, logic and verifcation, and beyond

    Parallel and Distributed Algorithms for a Class of Graph-Related Computational Problems.

    There exist at least two models of parallel computing, namely, shared-memory and message-passing. This research addresses problems in both these types of systems, and proposes efficient parallel (Shared-Memory Model) and distributed (message-passing) algorithms for a variety of graph related computational problems. In part I, we design algorithms for three generic problems in distributed systems: set manipulation, network structure recognition and facility placement. We present optimal distributed algorithms for recognizing rectangular-mesh networks. The time and message complexity of our algorithm is linear in the number of nodes in the network. We also lay the foundation for the recognition of 2-reducible, outer-planar and cactus graphs. These algorithms have a message complexity of O(kn), where, k is the number of isolated two degree nodes in the network. We introduce the problem of reliable r-domination and design unified optimal distributed algorithms for the total, reliable and independent r-domination on trees. The time and message complexity of our algorithm is O(n), where n is the number of nodes in the tree. In the domain of set manipulation we design optimal algorithms for determining the intersection of sets in a distributed environment, where each processor is assumed to have its own set. The time and message complexity of our set intersection algorithm is O(mn), where m is the cardinality of the smallest set. In part II of our research we design optimal algorithms for r-domination and efficient parallel algorithms for the p-center problems on trees. We also present an optimal algorithm for computing the maximum independent set on intervals i the EREW-PRAM model. The r-domination problem on trees can now be solved in O(logn)time with O(n/logn) processors using the EREW-PRAM model. A parallel algorithm for range searching is developed using the concept of distributed data structures. We show that O(logn) search time can be effected for a range search on n 3-dimensional points using (2.log\sp2n-14.logn + 8) processors. Our algorithm can easily be generalized for the case of d-dimensional range search. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

    Time-Optimal Algorithms on Meshes With Multiple Broadcasting

    The mesh-connected computer architecture has emerged as a natural choice for solving a large number of computational tasks in image processing, computational geometry, and computer vision. However, due to its large communication diameter, the mesh tends to be slow when it comes to handling data transfer operations over long distances. In an attempt to overcome this problem, mesh-connected computers have recently been augmented by the addition of various types of bus systems. One such system known as the mesh with multiple broadcasting involves enhancing the mesh architecture by the addition of row and column buses. The mesh with multiple broadcasting has proven to be feasible to implement in VLSI, and is used in the DAP family of computers. In recent years, efficient algorithms to solve a number of computational problems on meshes with multiple broadcasting have been proposed in the literature. The problems considered in this thesis are semigroup computations, sorting, multiple search, various convexity-related problems, and some tree problems. Based on the size of the input data for the problem under consideration, existing results can be broadly classified into sparse and dense. Specifically, for a given √n x √n mesh with multiple broadcasting, we refer to problems involving m∈O(nm \in O(\sqrt{n}) items as sparse, while the case £ O(n) will be referred to as dense. Finally, the case corresponding to 2 ≤ m ≤ n is be termed general. The motivation behind the current work is twofold. First, time-optimal solutions are proposed for the problems listed above. Secondly, an attempt is made to remove the artificial limitation of problems studied to sparse and dense cases. To establish the time-optimality of the algorithms presented in this work, we use some existing lower bound techniques along with new ones that we develop. We solve the semigroup computation problem for the general case and present a novel lower bound argument. We solve the multiple search problem in the general case and present some surprising applications to computational geometry. In the case of sorting, the general case is defined to be slightly different. For the specified range of the size of input, we present a time and VLSI-optimal algorithm. We also present time lower bound results and matching algorithms for a number of convexity related and tree problems in the sparse case

    On Covering Points with Conics and Strips in the Plane

    Geometric covering problems have always been of focus in computer scientific research. The generic geometric covering problem asks to cover a set S of n objects with another set of objects whose cardinality is minimum, in a geometric setting. Many versions of geometric cover have been studied in detail, one of which is line cover: Given a set of points in the plane, find the minimum number of lines to cover them. In Euclidean space Rm, this problem is known as Hyperplane Cover, where lines are replaced by affine hyperplanes bounded by dimension d. Line cover is NP-hard, so is its hyperplane analogue. Our thesis focuses on few extensions of hyperplane cover and line cover. One of the techniques used to study NP-hard problems is Fixed Parameter Tractability (FPT), where, in addition to input size, a parameter k is provided for input instance. We ask to solve the problem with respect to k, such that the running time is a function in both n and k, strictly polynomial in n, while the exponential component is limited to k. In this thesis, we study FPT and parameterized complexity theory, the theory of classifying hard problems involving a parameter k. We focus on two new geometric covering problems: covering a set of points in the plane with conics (conic cover) and covering a set of points with strips or fat lines of given width in the plane (fat line cover). A conic is a non-degenerate curve of degree two in the plane. A fat line is defined as a strip of finite width w. In this dissertation, we focus on the parameterized versions of these two problems, where, we are asked to cover the set of points with k conics or k fat lines. We use the existing techniques of FPT algorithms, kernelization and approximation algorithms to study these problems. We do a comprehensive study of these problems, starting with NP-hardness results to studying their parameterized hardness in terms of parameter k. We show that conic cover is fixed parameter tractable, and give an algorithm of running time O∗ ((k/1.38)^4k), where, O∗ implies that the running time is some polynomial in input size. Utilizing special properties of a parabola, we are able to achieve a faster algorithm and show a running time of O∗ ((k/1.15)^3k). For fat line cover, first we establish its NP-hardness, then we explore algorithmic possibilities with respect to parameterized complexity theory. We show W [1]-hardness of fat line cover with respect to the number of fat lines, by showing a parameterized reduction from the problem of stabbing axis-parallel squares in the plane. A parameterized reduction is an algorithm which transforms an instance of one parameterized problem into an instance of another parameterized problem using a FPT-algorithm. In addition, we show that some restricted versions of fat line cover are also W [1]-hard. Further, in this thesis, we explore a restricted version of fat line cover, where the set of points are integer coordinates and allow only axis-parallel lines to cover them. We show that the problem is still NP-hard. We also show that this version is fixed parameter tractable having a kernel size of O (k^2) and give a FPT-algorithm with a running time of O∗ (3^k). Finally, we conclude our study on this problem by giving an approximation algorithm for this version having a constant approximation ratio 2
