    A parallel interaction potential approach coupled with the immersed boundary method for fully resolved simulations of deformable interfaces and membranes

    In this paper we show and discuss the use of a versatile interaction potential approach coupled with an immersed boundary method to simulate a variety of flows involving deformable bodies. In particular, we focus on two kinds of problems, namely (i) deformation of liquid-liquid interfaces and (ii) flow in the left ventricle of the heart with either a mechanical or a natural valve. Both examples have in common the two-way interaction of the flow with a deformable interface or a membrane. The interaction potential approach (de Tullio & Pascazio, Jou. Comp. Phys., 2016; Tanaka, Wada and Nakamura, Computational Biomechanics, 2016) with minor modifications can be used to capture the deformation dynamics in both classes of problems. We show that the approach can be used to replicate the deformation dynamics of liquid-liquid interfaces through the use of ad-hoc elastic constants. The results from our simulations agree very well with previous studies on the deformation of drops in standard flow configurations such as deforming drop in a shear flow or a cross flow. We show that the same potential approach can also be used to study the flow in the left ventricle of the heart. The flow imposed into the ventricle interacts dynamically with the mitral valve (mechanical or natural) and the ventricle which are simulated using the same model. Results from these simulations are compared with ad- hoc in-house experimental measurements. Finally, a parallelisation scheme is presented, as parallelisation is unavoidable when studying large scale problems involving several thousands of simultaneously deforming bodies on hundreds of distributed memory computing processors

    Towards recovery of complex shapes in meshes using digital images for reverse engineering applications

    When an object owns complex shapes, or when its outer surfaces are simply inaccessible, some of its parts may not be captured during its reverse engineering. These deficiencies in the point cloud result in a set of holes in the reconstructed mesh. This paper deals with the use of information extracted from digital images to recover missing areas of a physical object. The proposed algorithm fills in these holes by solving an optimization problem that combines two kinds of information: (1) the geometric information available on the surrounding of the holes, (2) the information contained in an image of the real object. The constraints come from the image irradiance equation, a first-order non-linear partial differential equation that links the position of the mesh vertices to the light intensity of the image pixels. The blending conditions are satisfied by using an objective function based on a mechanical model of bar network that simulates the curvature evolution over the mesh.     Reconstruction of 3D human facial images using partial differential equations.

    One of the challenging problems in geometric modeling and computer graphics is the construction of realistic human facial geometry. Such geometry are essential for a wide range of applications, such as 3D face recognition, virtual reality applications, facial expression simulation and computer based plastic surgery application. This paper addresses a method for the construction of 3D geometry of human faces based on the use of Elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDE). Here the geometry corresponding to a human face is treated as a set of surface patches, whereby each surface patch is represented using four boundary curves in the 3-space that formulate the appropriate boundary conditions for the chosen PDE. These boundary curves are extracted automatically using 3D data of human faces obtained using a 3D scanner. The solution of the PDE generates a continuous single surface patch describing the geometry of the original scanned data. In this study, through a number of experimental verifications we have shown the efficiency of the PDE based method for 3D facial surface reconstruction using scan data. In addition to this, we also show that our approach provides an efficient way of facial representation using a small set of parameters that could be utilized for efficient facial data storage and verification purposes

    Numerical product design: Springback prediction, compensation and optimization

    Numerical simulations are being deployed widely for product design. However, the accuracy of the numerical tools is not yet always sufficiently accurate and reliable. This article focuses on the current state and recent developments in different stages of product design: springback prediction, springback compensation and optimization by finite element (FE) analysis. To improve the springback prediction by FE analysis, guidelines regarding the mesh discretization are provided and a new through-thickness integration scheme for shell elements is launched. In the next stage of virtual product design the product is compensated for springback. Currently, deformations due to springback are manually compensated in the industry. Here, a procedure to automatically compensate the tool geometry, including the CAD description, is presented and it is successfully applied to an industrial automotive part. The last stage in virtual product design comprises optimization. This article presents an optimization scheme which is capable of designing optimal and robust metal forming processes efficiently

    A feature-based reverse engineering system using artificial neural networks

    Reverse Engineering (RE) is the process of reconstructing CAD models from scanned data of a physical part acquired using 3D scanners. RE has attracted a great deal of research interest over the last decade. However, a review of the literature reveals that most research work have focused on creation of free form surfaces from point cloud data. Representing geometry in terms of surface patches is adequate to represent positional information, but can not capture any of the higher level structure of the part. Reconstructing solid models is of importance since the resulting solid models can be directly imported into commercial solid modellers for various manufacturing activities such as process planning, integral property computation, assembly analysis, and other applications. This research discusses the novel methodology of extracting geometric features directly from a data set of 3D scanned points, which utilises the concepts of artificial neural networks (ANNs). In order to design and develop a generic feature-based RE system for prismatic parts, the following five main tasks were investigated. (1) point data processing algorithms; (2) edge detection strategies; (3) a feature recogniser using ANNs; (4) a feature extraction module; (5) a CAD model exchanger into other CAD/CAM systems via IGES. A key feature of this research is the incorporation of ANN in feature recognition. The use of ANN approach has enabled the development of a flexible feature-based RE methodology that can be trained to deal with new features. ANNs require parallel input patterns. In this research, four geometric attributes extracted from a point set are input to the ANN module for feature recognition: chain codes, convex/concave, circular/rectangular and open/closed attribute. Recognising each feature requires the determination of these attributes. New and robust algorithms are developed for determining these attributes for each of the features. This feature-based approach currently focuses on solving the feature recognition problem based on 2.5D shapes such as block pocket, step, slot, hole, and boss, which are common and crucial in mechanical engineering products. This approach is validated using a set of industrial components. The test results show that the strategy for recognising features is reliable

    Extracting 3D parametric curves from 2D images of Helical objects

    Helical objects occur in medicine, biology, cosmetics, nanotechnology, and engineering. Extracting a 3D parametric curve from a 2D image of a helical object has many practical applications, in particular being able to extract metrics such as tortuosity, frequency, and pitch. We present a method that is able to straighten the image object and derive a robust 3D helical curve from peaks in the object boundary. The algorithm has a small number of stable parameters that require little tuning, and the curve is validated against both synthetic and real-world data. The results show that the extracted 3D curve comes within close Hausdorff distance to the ground truth, and has near identical tortuosity for helical objects with a circular profile. Parameter insensitivity and robustness against high levels of image noise are demonstrated thoroughly and quantitatively
