    Financial Risk, Innovation and Alternative Pathways to Decarbonising the Energy System in 2050

    There is a lot of forward looking work attempting to envisage the decarbonised energy system of the future as reflected with current interest in 'smart grids'. A central tenet behind most visions of the 'smart grids' of the future are the price signals that financial and commodity markets will deliver to facilitate effective and efficient resource allocation. Most of these visions take stylised and static views of financial and commodity markets despite the fact that these markets are experiencing dramatic change due to innovation and regulation. Accordingly, the paper maps the risks associated in the fusion of financial innovation with innovation in the energy system through a theoretical framework that draws on evolutionary models of paradigm shift. Risks to both the financial and energy systems are characterised as either emanating from primary or secondary markets and these are explored in terms of alternative visions of the energy system in the long run

    The city of future: biourbanism and constructural law

    Nowadays dynamic elements in urban fabric are often concealed by the insertion of stylish new architecture; real patterns of social life (‘bios’), have been replaced by rigid geometric grids and compact building blocks. New Urbanism and Biourbanism affirm that cities are now risking to be unstable and deprived of healthy social interactions. As an expansion of older historical urban fabric patterns, harmonious architecture can have a positive impact on the fitness of both human body and mind. Not only Biourbanism attempts to reinstate balance and lost values in the urban fabric, but also reinforces human-oriented design emergences in micro and macro scales. As a multifaceted discipline, it embraces laws of physics, such as Constructal Law and acknowledges its noticeable and unremitting influence to urban human behaviours. Urban life and behaviours are based upon systems of human communication formed by dynamic patterns; we are now talking about negotiating boundaries between human activities, changes in geographic mapping and mainly about sustainable systems to support uninterrupted growth of communities worldwide. Therefore, as a vital shift in architectural education, not only Biourbanism offers the opportunity to explore patterns and linguistics deeply imbedded into the built environment, but also enables scholars and communities to come together and participate actively into fast and innovative urban interventions. Projects developed during educational and professional training aim at reinstating memorable and preferential paths of communication, favouring everyday life rituals of the body and mind. Hence, by following everlasting laws of physics and formulas inherited from nature, architectural forms can be considered as the real innovation in urban design and planning of the City of the Future.Conference presentation funded by Department of Engineering

    A Neural Model of Timed Response Learning in the Cerebellum

    A spectral timing model is developed to explain how the cerebellum learns adaptively timed responses during the rabbit's conditioned nictitating membrane response (NMR). The model posits two learning sites that respectively enable conditioned excitation and timed disinhibition of the response. Long-term potentiation of mossy fiber pathways projecting to interpositus nucleus cells allows conditioned excitation of the response's adaptive gain. Long-term depression of parallel fiber- Purkinje cell synapses in the cerebellar cortex allows learning of an adaptively timed reduction in Purkinje cell inhibition of the same nuclear cells. A spectrum of partially timed responses summate to generate an accurately timed population response. In agreement with physiological data, the model Purkinje cell activity decreases in the interval following the onset of the conditioned stimulus, and nuclear cell responses match conditioned response (CR) topography. The model reproduces key behavioral features of the NMR, including the properties that CR peak amplitude occurs at the unconditioned stimulus (US) onset, a discrete CR peak shift occurs with a change in interstimulus interval (ISI) between conditioned stim- ulus (CS) and US, mixed training at two different ISis produces a double-peaked CR, CR acquisition and rate of responding depend unimodally on the lSI, CR onset latency decreases during training, and maladaptively-timed, small-amplitude CRs result from ablation of cerebellar cortex.National Science Foundation (IRI-90-24877); Office of Naval Research (N00014-92-J-1309); Air Force Office of Scientific Research (F49620-92-J-0225

    weSPOT: A personal and social approach to inquiry-based learning

    weSPOT is a new European initiative proposing a novel approach for personal and social inquiry-based learning in secondary and higher education. weSPOT aims at enabling students to create their mash-ups out of cloud based tools and services in order to perform scientific investigations. Students will also be able to share their inquiry accomplishments in social networks and receive feedback from the learning environment and their peers. This paper presents the research framework of the weSPOT project, as well as the initial inquiry-based learning scenarios that will be piloted by the project in real-life educational settings

    Critical assessment issues in work-integrated learning

    Assessment has long been a contentious issue in work-integrated learning (WIL) and cooperative education. Despite assessment being central to the integrity and accountability of a university and long-standing theories around best practice in assessment, enacting quality assessment practices has proven to be more difficult. Authors in this special issue on assessment highlight the need for balanced assessment approaches that reflect the highly variable experiences students encounter, and the need to keep validity and reliability paramount when constructing assessment structures. Increasingly quality and standards policies driven by more regulatory university environments are impacting on the design of assessment profiles. The value of workplace supervisors’ feedback in WIL contexts is discussed and the challenges of measuring the nuances of unpredictable, context-dependent WIL outcomes are explored. The benefits of ePorftolios are advocated and the use of these platforms as assessment tools that enable a creative way for students to provide evidence of employability capabilities highlighted
