Exploring Community Building with an Awareness Display
In this paper, we present a field trial of a pervasive system called Panorama that is aimed at supporting social awareness in work environments. Panorama is an intelligent situated display in the staff room of an academic department. It artistically represents non-critical user generated content such as images from holidays, conferences and other social gatherings, as well as textual messages on its display. It also captures images and videos from different public spaces of the department and streams them onto the Panorama screen, using appropriate abstraction techniques. We studied the use of Panorama for two weeks and observed how Panorama affected staff members’ social awareness and community building. We report that Panorama simulated curiosity and learning, initiated new interactions and provided a mechanism for cherishing old memories
Towards Accurate Camera Geopositioning by Image Matching
In this work, we present a camera geopositioning system based on matching a
query image against a database with panoramic images. For matching, our system
uses memory vectors aggregated from global image descriptors based on
convolutional features to facilitate fast searching in the database. To speed
up searching, a clustering algorithm is used to balance geographical
positioning and computation time. We refine the obtained position from the
query image using a new outlier removal algorithm. The matching of the query
image is obtained with a recall@5 larger than 90% for panorama-to-panorama
matching. We cluster available panoramas from geographically adjacent locations
into a single compact representation and observe computational gains of
approximately 50% at the cost of only a small (approximately 3%) recall loss.
Finally, we present a coordinate estimation algorithm that reduces the median
geopositioning error by up to 20%
CAPTURING PANORAMA IMAGES
A panorama imaging system can be used to reduce parallax errors when capturing high quality panoramas. The panorama imaging system includes a panorama guidance apparatus and an image capturing device. A user of the system attaches the panorama guidance apparatus to the image capturing device and captures a panorama image with the image capturing device while maintaining a stable position of the panorama guidance apparatus
Exploiting 2D Floorplan for Building-scale Panorama RGBD Alignment
This paper presents a novel algorithm that utilizes a 2D floorplan to align
panorama RGBD scans. While effective panorama RGBD alignment techniques exist,
such a system requires extremely dense RGBD image sampling. Our approach can
significantly reduce the number of necessary scans with the aid of a floorplan
image. We formulate a novel Markov Random Field inference problem as a scan
placement over the floorplan, as opposed to the conventional scan-to-scan
alignment. The technical contributions lie in multi-modal image correspondence
cues (between scans and schematic floorplan) as well as a novel coverage
potential avoiding an inherent stacking bias. The proposed approach has been
evaluated on five challenging large indoor spaces. To the best of our
knowledge, we present the first effective system that utilizes a 2D floorplan
image for building-scale 3D pointcloud alignment. The source code and the data

Fly eyes are not still: a motion illusion in Drosophila flight supports parallel visual processing.
Most animals shift gaze by a 'fixate and saccade' strategy, where the fixation phase stabilizes background motion. A logical prerequisite for robust detection and tracking of moving foreground objects, therefore, is to suppress the perception of background motion. In a virtual reality magnetic tether system enabling free yaw movement, Drosophila implemented a fixate and saccade strategy in the presence of a static panorama. When the spatial wavelength of a vertical grating was below the Nyquist wavelength of the compound eyes, flies drifted continuously and gaze could not be maintained at a single location. Because the drift occurs from a motionless stimulus - thus any perceived motion stimuli are generated by the fly itself - it is illusory, driven by perceptual aliasing. Notably, the drift speed was significantly faster than under a uniform panorama, suggesting perceptual enhancement as a result of aliasing. Under the same visual conditions in a rigid-tether paradigm, wing steering responses to the unresolvable static panorama were not distinguishable from those to a resolvable static pattern, suggesting visual aliasing is induced by ego motion. We hypothesized that obstructing the control of gaze fixation also disrupts detection and tracking of objects. Using the illusory motion stimulus, we show that magnetically tethered Drosophila track objects robustly in flight even when gaze is not fixated as flies continuously drift. Taken together, our study provides further support for parallel visual motion processing and reveals the critical influence of body motion on visuomotor processing. The survey of the Basilica di Collemaggio in L’Aquila with a system of terrestrial imaging and most proven techniques
The proposed job concerns the evaluation of a series of surveys carried out in the context of a campaign of studies begun in 2015 with the objective of comparing the accuracies obtainable with the systems of terrestrial imaging, compared to unmanned aerial vehicle imaging and laser scanner survey. In particular, the authors want to test the applicability of a system of imaging rover (IR), an innovative terrestrial imaging system, that consists of a multi-camera with integrated global positioning system (GPS)/global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver, that is very recently released technique, and only a few literature references exist on the specific subject. In detail, the IR consists of a total of 12 calibrated cameras – seven “panorama” and five downward-looking – providing complete site documentation that can potentially be used to make photogrammetric measurements. The data acquired in this experimentation were then elaborated with various software packages in order to obtain point clouds and a three-dimensional model in different cases, and a comparison of the various results obtained was carried out. Following, the case study of the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila is reported; Collemaggio is an UNESCO world heritage site; it was damaged during the seismic event of 2009, and its restoration is still in progress
