The fundamentals of unimodal palmprint authentication based on a biometric system: A review

    Get PDF
Biometric system can be defined as the automated method of identifying or authenticating the identity of a living person based on physiological or behavioral traits. Palmprint biometric-based authentication has gained considerable attention in recent years. Globally, enterprises have been exploring biometric authorization for some time, for the purpose of security, payment processing, law enforcement CCTV systems, and even access to offices, buildings, and gyms via the entry doors. Palmprint biometric system can be divided into unimodal and multimodal. This paper will investigate the biometric system and provide a detailed overview of the palmprint technology with existing recognition approaches. Finally, we introduce a review of previous works based on a unimodal palmprint system using different databases

Palm print recognition based on harmony search algorithm

Due to its stabilized and distinctive properties, the palmprint is considered a physiological biometric. Recently, palm print recognition has become one of the foremost desired identification methods. This manuscript presents a new recognition palm print scheme based on a harmony search algorithm by computing the Gaussian distribution. The first step in this scheme is preprocessing, which comprises the segmentation, according to the characteristics of the geometric shape of palmprint, the region of interest (ROI) of palmprint was cut off. After the processing of the ROI image is taken as input related to the harmony search algorithm for extracting the features of the palmprint images through using many parameters for the harmony search algorithm, Finally, Gaussian distribution has been used for computing distance between features for region palm print images, in order to recognize the palm print images for persons by training and testing a set of images, The scheme which has been proposed using palmprint databases, was provided by College of Engineering Pune (COEP), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the suggested recognition system for palm print with regards to the rate of recognition that reached approximately 92.60%

Palmprint identification using an ensemble of sparse representations

Among various palmprint identification methods proposed in the literature, sparse representation for classification (SRC) is very attractive offering high accuracy. Although SRC has good discriminative ability, its performance strongly depends on the quality of the training data. In particular, SRC suffers from two major problems: lack of training samples per class and large intra-class variations. In fact, palmprint images not only contain identity information but they also have other information, such as illumination and geometrical distortions due to the unconstrained conditions and the movement of the hand. In this case, the sparse representation assumption may not hold well in the original space since samples from different classes may be considered from the same class. This paper aims to enhance palmprint identification performance through SRC by proposing a simple yet efficient method based on an ensemble of sparse representations through an ensemble of discriminative dictionaries satisfying SRC assumption. The ensemble learning has the advantage to reduce the sensitivity due to the limited size of the training data and is performed based on random subspace sampling over 2D-PCA space while keeping the image inherent structure and information. In order to obtain discriminative dictionaries satisfying SRC assumption, a new space is learned by minimizing and maximizing the intra-class and inter-class variations using 2D-LDA. Extensive experiments are conducted on two publicly available palmprint data sets: multispectral and PolyU. Obtained results showed very promising results compared with both state-of-the-art holistic and coding methods. Besides these findings, we provide an empirical analysis of the parameters involved in the proposed technique to guide the neophyte. 2018 IEEE.This work was supported by the National Priority Research Program from the Qatar National Research Fund under Grant 6-249-1-053. Palmprint biometric data acquisition: extracting a consistent Region of Interest (ROI) for method evaluation

Traditionally personal identification was based on possessions. This could be in the form of a physical key, ID card, passport, or some kind of knowledge based entry system such as a password. All of these are prone to attack where impersonation of your identity for some kind of immediate financial gain, or the more serious identity theft, is possible simply by being in physical possession of an identity device or knowledge of a password. In contrast biometric identification attempts to identify who you are. Iris or retina patterns, palmprint, fingerprint, face and voice recognition are well known examples of biometric attributes. Some biometrics such as fingerprints were established in the latter 19th century well before computers were commonplace. Others such as face, iris and voice recognition have emerged as computer technology and methodologies have developed. More recent research has also devoted attention to internal physiological biometrics based on brain (electroencephalogram), heart activity (electrocardiogram) and palm vein patterns. Even your personal gait based on how you walk has been investigated. Both security and forensic applications compete to find the best identification method trading off accuracy for performance depending on the intended application. This thesis is a continuation of previous research to develop a tool for distributed palmprint image data gathering. This would enable researchers to concentrate on method evaluation whilst not losing valuable time in data validation. This simple tool will enable palmprint biometric diversity across continents to be gathered. This thesis continues by establishing how to extract a consistent region of interest in the acquired palmprint images from a mobile phone ,or statically mounted digital, camera. The importance of establishing a consistent region of interest is considered by studying a simple existing identification method applied to a known palmprint database. In the discussions and conclusions the usefulness of this method is established and the final research outlined that is needed to finalize the palmprint acquisition tool for academic research
