    Get PDF
Taking stock of recent developments in the field of philanthropy concerning the theme of Art for Social Change, this paper shall analyze the new cultural and artistic trends in civic participation and social engagement in Egypt that take their root well before the revolution and could be further emphasized following the Uprisings. The focus will be on new philanthropic orientations fostering community based cultural expressions rather than 'elitist' art forms or already recognized performing artists (concerts, opera, and blockbuster films)

This research paper aims to discuss the nature of change in the functional purpose of some archaeological and historical buildings in Cairo during the 19th and 20th centuries along with a comparative study of some of the most important heritage constructions and evidences in the world, such as the British Museum in London, as well as the Historical Railway Station of Orsay in Paris. There are some practical attempts and technical procedures that have been carried out to achieve some functional purposes, differ from the original purposes of the archaeological and historical buildings in Cairo in particular. In a similar way, this has been applied to historical and heritage buildings around the world in general. The methodology of this study will be addressed through analytical and comparative study of the original idea or the original functional purpose of these archaeological and historical buildings. The outlines and features of change in the functional purpose of these archaeological and historical buildings are represented in some technical procedures like the technique of adaptive rehabilitation or rehabilitation in terms of adaptation, so there is a necessity for conformity and harmony between heritage buildings and modern functional purpose, and this should be done without any disagreement and repulsion with the original functional purpose. There is also a necessity to protect the original functional purpose, which should be adapted to the modern functional purpose in order to achieve compatibility between old and new integration processes

The main goal of the work is to comprehend the motivations behind building an ancient palace next to a body of water and to define the effects of the waterbody on the waterfront palace design. To achieve this goal, the primary waterfront palaces, built in the Mediterranean and Middle East, have been studied chronologically in three time periods determined as Pre-Hellenistic Era, Hellenistic Era, Roman and Late Antique Era in order to detect the structural evolution of the investigated palaces and their interactions with one another. Using the acquired information, the ancient waterfront palaces have been divided into two main classes as artificial and natural. Artificial waterfront palaces are built inland by creating a man-made waterbody, while the natural waterfront palaces are built next to an untouched waterbody, such as seas, lakes and rivers. Due to the vulnerable location of the natural waterfront palaces, they have been divided into three subclasses regarding the level of security considered for their design. In order to understand natural waterfront palaces in depth, the Triconch Palace in Butrint, which provides significant information about the design of waterfront palaces in the Roman period, has been chosen as the main focus of the research. The palace was built in 2.- 4. centuries A.D. next to the Vivari Channel. On its first phase, which coincides with Pax Romana period, the palace reflects the features of a Roman seaside villa. After the end of Pax Romana period the increase in the security need caused structural changes on the design of the palace, which sheds light on the evolution of the natural waterfront palaces

International audienceOur contribution is devoted to a constructive overview over the implicit system approach in modern control of switched dynamic models. We study a class of non-stationary autonomous switched systems and formally establish the existence of solution. We next incorporate the implicit systems approach into our consideration. At the beginning of the contribution we also develop a specific system example that is used for illustrations of various system aspects that we consider. Our research involves among others a deep examination of the reachability property in the framework of the implicit system framework that we propose. Based on this methodology we finally propose a resulting robust control design for the switched systems under consideration and the proposed control strategy is implemented in the context of the illustrative example

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to identify the relevance and implications of ancient accounting practices to the contemporary theorizing of accounting. The paper provides a synthesis of the literature on ancient accounting particularly in relation to issues of human accountability, identifies its major achievements and outlines some of the key challenges facing researchers. We argue that far from being an idiosyncratic research field of marginal interest, research in ancient accounting is a rich and promising undertaking. The paper concludes by considering a number of implications of ancient accounting practices for the theorizing of accounting and identifies news avenues for future research.
