A study on the geographical distribution of Brazil’s prestigious software developers
Brazil is an emerging economy with many IT initiatives from public and private sectors. To evaluate the progress of such initiatives, we study the geographical distribution of software developers in Brazil, in particular which of the Brazilian states succeed the most in attracting and nurturing them. We compare the prestige of developers with socio-economic data and find that (i) prestigious developers tend to be located in the most economically developed regions of Brazil, (ii) they are likely to follow others in the same state they are located in, (iii) they are likely to follow other prestigious developers, and (iv) they tend to follow more people. We discuss the implications of those findings for the development of the Brazilian software industry.Fernando Figueira Filho, Marcelo Gattermann Perin, Christoph Treude, Sabrina Marczak, Leandro Melo, Igor Marques da Silva and Lucas Bibiano dos Santo
Analysis of course co-enrollment at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science
Network analysis and consequently numerous network measurements allow an insight into the characteristics of network and therefore have an important role in its understanding. In this thesis the analysis of the professional and masters study programme of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science is conducted. The purpose is to find groups of courses based on how the students co-enroll them. We have achieved this by using five already established approaches intended for revealing characteristic groups in a network and with the help of widely-accessible software tools such as Gephi, Visone and Pajek. For revealing groups we use the approaches for core-periphery structure, modularity optimization, label propagation, blockmodeling and stochastic blockmodeling. The results obtained with the introduced approaches are compared and, in the last part of the thesis, we provide the interpretation of those we find interesting and useful from our point of view. Courses of a particular study module or courses of instructors from the same laboratory are not assigned to just one of the groups, but they do, however, get close in some cases
Post-processing partitions to identify domains of modularity optimization
We introduce the Convex Hull of Admissible Modularity Partitions (CHAMP)
algorithm to prune and prioritize different network community structures
identified across multiple runs of possibly various computational heuristics.
Given a set of partitions, CHAMP identifies the domain of modularity
optimization for each partition ---i.e., the parameter-space domain where it
has the largest modularity relative to the input set---discarding partitions
with empty domains to obtain the subset of partitions that are "admissible"
candidate community structures that remain potentially optimal over indicated
parameter domains. Importantly, CHAMP can be used for multi-dimensional
parameter spaces, such as those for multilayer networks where one includes a
resolution parameter and interlayer coupling. Using the results from CHAMP, a
user can more appropriately select robust community structures by observing the
sizes of domains of optimization and the pairwise comparisons between
partitions in the admissible subset. We demonstrate the utility of CHAMP with
several example networks. In these examples, CHAMP focuses attention onto
pruned subsets of admissible partitions that are 20-to-1785 times smaller than
the sets of unique partitions obtained by community detection heuristics that
were input into CHAMP.Comment: http://www.mdpi.com/1999-4893/10/3/9
This paper describes a process of semi-automatic systematic reviews in scientific research. On the one hand, it is presented a software prototype based on artificial intelligence, semi-automatic systematic reviews tool. On the other hand, a study case of a phd thesis project shows the maps and information with aggregate value. In addition, the software prototype were evaluated by 40 students of master and Ph.D projects, they report the utility of the software tool by a survey. This work presents the modules and functionalities, software architecture and software deployment. Furthermore, a comparative study of a set of similar software tools has been conducted according to the following criteria: input files, analysis and mapping, and software license. Finally, it is discussed the results of the comparative study, the implementation of artificial intelligence techniques, the software scalability and the easiness of include new analysis and maps.
