A pilot study on discriminative power of features of superficial venous pattern in the hand
The goal of the project is to develop an automatic way to identify, represent the superficial vasculature of the back hand and investigate its discriminative power as biometric feature.
A prototype of a system that extracts the superficial venous pattern of infrared images of back hands will be described. Enhancement algorithms are used to solve the lack of contrast of the infrared images. To trace the veins, a vessel tracking technique is applied, obtaining binary masks of the superficial venous tree. Successively, a method to estimate the blood vessels calibre, length, the location and angles of vessel junctions, will be presented. The discriminative power of these features will be studied, independently and simultaneously, considering two features vector.

Semantic-Based Facial Image-Retrieval System with Aid of Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization and Squared Euclidian Distance
The semantic-based facial image-retrieval system is concerned with the process of retrieving facial images based on the semantic information of query images and database images. The image-retrieval systems discussed in the literature have some drawbacks that degrade the performance of facial image retrieval. To reduce the drawbacks in the existing techniques, we propose an efficient semantic-based facial image-retrieval (SFIR) system using APSO and squared Euclidian distance (SED). The proposed technique consists of three stages: feature extraction, optimization, and image retrieval. Initially, the features are extracted from the database images. Low-level features (shape, color, and texture) and high-level features (face, mouth, nose, left eye, and right eye) are the two features used in the feature-extraction process. In the second stage, a semantic gap between these features is reduced by a well-known adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO) technique. Afterward, a squared Euclidian distance (SED) measure will be utilized to retrieve the face images that have less distance with the query image. The proposed semantic-based facial image-retrieval (SFIR) system with APSO-SED will be implemented in working platform of MATLAB, and the performance will be analyzed
Prediction model of alcohol intoxication from facial temperature dynamics based on K-means clustering driven by evolutionary computing
Alcohol intoxication is a significant phenomenon, affecting many social areas, including work procedures or car driving. Alcohol causes certain side effects including changing the facial thermal distribution, which may enable the contactless identification and classification of alcohol-intoxicated people. We adopted a multiregional segmentation procedure to identify and classify symmetrical facial features, which reliably reflects the facial-temperature variations while subjects are drinking alcohol. Such a model can objectively track alcohol intoxication in the form of a facial temperature map. In our paper, we propose the segmentation model based on the clustering algorithm, which is driven by the modified version of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) evolutionary optimization with the goal of facial temperature features extraction from the IR (infrared radiation) images. This model allows for a definition of symmetric clusters, identifying facial temperature structures corresponding with intoxication. The ABC algorithm serves as an optimization process for an optimal cluster's distribution to the clustering method the best approximate individual areas linked with gradual alcohol intoxication. In our analysis, we analyzed a set of twenty volunteers, who had IR images taken to reflect the process of alcohol intoxication. The proposed method was represented by multiregional segmentation, allowing for classification of the individual spatial temperature areas into segmentation classes. The proposed method, besides single IR image modelling, allows for dynamical tracking of the alcohol-temperature features within a process of intoxication, from the sober state up to the maximum observed intoxication level.Web of Science118art. no. 99
Biometric iris image segmentation and feature extraction for iris recognition
PhD ThesisThe continued threat to security in our interconnected world today begs for urgent
solution. Iris biometric like many other biometric systems provides an alternative solution
to this lingering problem. Although, iris recognition have been extensively studied, it is
nevertheless, not a fully solved problem which is the factor inhibiting its implementation
in real world situations today. There exists three main problems facing the existing iris
recognition systems: 1) lack of robustness of the algorithm to handle non-ideal iris
images, 2) slow speed of the algorithm and 3) the applicability to the existing systems in
real world situation. In this thesis, six novel approaches were derived and implemented
to address these current limitation of existing iris recognition systems.
A novel fast and accurate segmentation approach based on the combination of graph-cut
optimization and active contour model is proposed to define the irregular boundaries of
the iris in a hierarchical 2-level approach. In the first hierarchy, the approximate boundary
of the pupil/iris is estimated using a method based on Hough’s transform for the pupil and
adapted starburst algorithm for the iris. Subsequently, in the second hierarchy, the final
irregular boundary of the pupil/iris is refined and segmented using graph-cut based active
contour (GCBAC) model proposed in this work. The segmentation is performed in two
levels, whereby the pupil is segmented first before the iris. In order to detect and eliminate
noise and reflection artefacts which might introduce errors to the algorithm, a preprocessing
technique based on adaptive weighted edge detection and high-pass filtering
is used to detect reflections on the high intensity areas of the image while exemplar based
image inpainting is used to eliminate the reflections. After the segmentation of the iris
boundaries, a post-processing operation based on combination of block classification
method and statistical prediction approach is used to detect any super-imposed occluding
eyelashes/eyeshadows. The normalization of the iris image is achieved though the rubber
sheet model.
In the second stage, an approach based on construction of complex wavelet filters and
rotation of the filters to the direction of the principal texture direction is used for the
extraction of important iris information while a modified particle swam optimization
(PSO) is used to select the most prominent iris features for iris encoding. Classification
of the iriscode is performed using adaptive support vector machines (ASVM).
Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves accuracy of
98.99% and is computationally about 2 times faster than the best existing approach.Ebonyi State
