    AbstractAfter a general description of the Burrows–Wheeler transform and a brief survey of recent work on processing its output, the paper examines the coding of the zero-runs from the MTF recoding stage, an aspect with little prior treatment. It is concluded that the original scheme proposed by Wheeler is extremely efficient and unlikely to be much improved.The paper then proposes some new interpretations and uses of the Burrows–Wheeler transform, with new insights and approaches to lossless compression, perhaps including techniques from error correction

Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier B.V.In this work, the effects of a standard ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel and a new, ultra-clean synthetic GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuel on the performance, combustion and emissions of a single-cylinder, direct injection, diesel engine were studied under different operating conditions with addition of simulated reformer product gas, referred to as reformed EGR (REGR). For this purpose various levels of REGR of two different compositions were tested. Tests with standard EGR were also carried out for comparison. Experiments were performed at four steady state operating conditions and the brake thermal efficiency, combustion process and engine emission data are presented and discussed. In general, GTL fuel resulted in a higher brake thermal efficiency compared to ULSD but the differences depended on the engine condition and EGR/REGR level and composition. The combustion pattern was significantly modified when the REGR level was increased. Although the extent of the effects of REGR on emissions depended on the engine load, it can be generally concluded that an optimal combination of GTL and REGR significantly improved both NOx and smoke emissions. In some cases, NOx and smoke emission reductions of 75% and 60%, respectively, were achieved compared to operation with ULSD without REGR.     A Compression-Based Toolkit for Modelling and Processing Natural Language Text

    A novel compression-based toolkit for modelling and processing natural language text is described. The design of the toolkit adopts an encoding perspective—applications are considered to be problems in searching for the best encoding of different transformations of the source text into the target text. This paper describes a two phase ‘noiseless channel model’ architecture that underpins the toolkit which models the text processing as a lossless communication down a noise-free channel. The transformation and encoding that is performed in the first phase must be both lossless and reversible. The role of the verification and decoding second phase is to verify the correctness of the communication of the target text that is produced by the application. This paper argues that this encoding approach has several advantages over the decoding approach of the standard noisy channel model. The concepts abstracted by the toolkit’s design are explained together with details of the library calls. The pseudo-code for a number of algorithms is also described for the applications that the toolkit implements including encoding, decoding, classification, training (model building), parallel sentence alignment, word segmentation and language segmentation. Some experimental results, implementation details, memory usage and execution speeds are also discussed for these applications

    A review study on diesel and natural gas and its impact on CI engine emissions

    Diesel engines produce high emissions of nitrogen oxide, smoke and particulate matter. The challenge is to reduce exhaust emissions but without making changing their mechanical configuration. This paper is an overview of the effect of natural gas on the diesel engine emissions. Literature review suggests that engine load, air-fuel ratio, and engine speed play a key role in reducing the pollutants in the diesel engine emissions with natural gas enrichment. It is found that increasing the percentage of natural gas (CNG) will affect emissions. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is decreased and increased at part loads and high loads respectively when adding CNG. The reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM) and smoke are observed when adding CNG. However, carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbon (HC) are increased when CNG is added
