    Post-seismic effectiveness of the strengthening work carried out with GFRP applied to historical masonry buildings: the case study of the Spoleto Cathedral

    The sequence of major earthquakes that has affected Italy in recent decades has required the use of new materials and innovative techniques for the security of damaged buildings. Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) represents a novelty in the field of seismic improvement techniques applicable also to historical masonry structures. The use of composite materials can respect the conservation principles of the monumental buildings. This study describes the effectiveness of the seismic improvement techniques carried out by means of FRP in the Spoleto Chatedral (Italy) after the 1997 Umbria-Marche earthquake. The strengthening work concerned the making safe of damaged vault structures by means of gluing fibreglass bands (GFRP). After 20 years, during the 2016 Amatrice-Norcia earthquake, near Spoleto, the cathedral reinforced with the GFRP bands has not suffered any damage demonstrating the effectiveness of the seismic strengthening techniques

    List of predatory journals and publishers

    The predatory publications are a big challenge, especially in developing countries including Nepal. Predatory publishing not only harms or degrades academic reputations but also wastes time, money, resources, and efforts (Shrestha et al., 2020). Predatory publications pose a danger that could undermine the quality, integrity, and reliability of published scientific research works. Predatory publications also harm the reputation of the universities and research organizations which are connected with these publications. Universities and research organizations should educate researchers, especially juniors, about the existence of predatory journals, the dangers they pose, and ways to avoid them (Shrestha, 2020). The problem of potential open access predatory or fake publications is an important issue that must be actively discussed at national, regional and world level within academic communities (Shrestha et al., 2018b). Predatory publications must be avoided or excluded while evaluating CV or biodata of researchers for job promotion and releasing the research grants. The authors should be careful about predatory or fake journals/publishers for communicating their scientific works (Shrestha et al., 2018a). The researchers should be aware of the quality of journals while publishing their research results (Shrestha et al., 2020). There is an international initiative called “Think. Check. Submit.” (http://thinkchecksubmit.org) that helps the researchers to identify trusted journals for publication. It contains a simple checklist researchers can use to assess the credentials of a journal or publisher. Authors should look at the journal website some of the articles published in the journals to assess their quality; this quick review may be all that is needed to identify predatory journals (Forero et al., 2018).The below list of predatory journals and publishers is copied from https://predatoryjournals.com/ (Anonymous, 2020a) and https://beallslist.net/ (Anonymous, 2020b). It shows possible use in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, tumor treatment, plasmodial diseases, and especially cognitive disorders. The isolated structures were subsequently tested for inhibition of human cholinesterases.1 These substances could be used to treat Alzheimer's disease, which has been increasing in recent years. We are not yet able to stop disease, just slow it down. The starting product was a summary alkaloid extract from crushed tree bark, which showed very interesting activity against AChE and BChE (IC50 = 15,19±0,96 µg/ml for AChE and IC50 = 0,37±0,049 µg/ml for BChE). Vykazuje možné využití při léčbě benigní hyperplazie prostaty, léčbě nádorů, malárie, a hlavně kognitivních poruch. Izolované struktury byly podrobeny testování na inhibici lidských cholinesteras.1 Tyto látky by mohly být použity pro léčbu Alzheimerovy choroby, což je onemocnění, jehož incidence v posledních letech stoupá. Nemoc zatím nejsme schopni zastavit, pouze zpomalit. Výchozím produktem byl sumární alkaloidní extrakt z drcené kůry stromu, který vykazoval aktivitu vůči AChE a BChE (IC50 = 15,19±0,96 μg/ml pro AChE a IC50 = 0,37 ±0.049 μg/ml pro BChE).
