    Comparative Studies on Decentralized Multiloop PID Controller Design Using Evolutionary Algorithms

    Decentralized PID controllers have been designed in this paper for simultaneous tracking of individual process variables in multivariable systems under step reference input. The controller design framework takes into account the minimization of a weighted sum of Integral of Time multiplied Squared Error (ITSE) and Integral of Squared Controller Output (ISCO) so as to balance the overall tracking errors for the process variables and required variation in the corresponding manipulated variables. Decentralized PID gains are tuned using three popular Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) viz. Genetic Algorithm (GA), Evolutionary Strategy (ES) and Cultural Algorithm (CA).     Tuning of Nonlinear PID Controller for TRMS Using Evolutionary Computation Methods

    In this paper, the Twin rotor MIMO system (TRMS) is tuned by Nonlinear PID controller using Evolutionary Computation methods. The proposed Nonlinear PID controller, used to tune TRMS, improves the system performance with additional degrees of freedom. Evolutionary Computation methods such as Differential Search Algorithm (DSA), real coded Genetic Algorithm (RGA) with simulated binary crossover (SBX) and Particle Swarm optimization (PSO) and Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) are used to determine the optimal parameters of the proposed controller by minimizing Integral Square Error (ISE) for rotor response of TRMS. SIMULINK MATLAB software is used for simulating the system. The statistical performance of the controller is analysed among twenty independent trials by taking best, worst, mean and standard deviations of ISE. Simulation results reveal that TRMS system tuned by nonlinear PID controller using Particle Swarm optimization (PSO) is better than the other methods

    Design of Multivariate PID Controller for Power Networks Using GEA and PSO

    The issue of proper modeling and control for industrial systems is one of the challenging issues in the industry. In addition, in recent years, PID controller design for linear systems has been widely considered. The topic discussed in some of the articles is mostly speed control in the field of electric machines, where various algorithms have been used to optimize the considered controller, and always one of the most important challenges in this field is designing a controller with a high degree of freedom. In these researches, the focus is more on searching for an algorithm with more optimal results than others in order to estimate the parameters in a more appropriate way. There are many techniques for designing a PID controller. Among these methods, meta-innovative methods have been widely studied. In addition, the effectiveness of these methods in controlling systems has been proven. In this paper, a new method for grid control is discussed. In this method, the PID controller is used to control the power systems, which can be controlled more effectively, so that this controller has four parameters, and to determine these parameters, the optimization method and evolutionary algorithms of genetics (EGA) and PSO are used.  One of the most important advantages of these algorithms is their high speed and accuracy. In this article, these algorithms have been tested on a single-machine system, so that the single-machine system model is presented first, then the PID controller components will be examined. In the following, according to the transformation function matrix and the relative gain matrix, suitable inputs for each of the outputs are determined. At the end, an algorithm for designing PID controller for multivariable MIMO systems is presented. To show the effectiveness of the proposed controller, a simulation was performed in the MATLAB environment and the results of the simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed controller

    GA-Based Optimization for Multivariable Level Control System: A Case Study of Multi-Tank System

    This paper presents a systematic way to determine the trade-off optimized controller tunings using computation optimization technique for both servo and regulatory controls of the Multi-Tank System, as one of the applications under the multivariable loop principle. The paper describes an improved way to obtain the best Proportional-Integral (PI) controller tunings in reducing the dependency on engineering knowledge, practical experiences and complex mathematical calculations. Relative Gain Array (RGA) calculation justified the degree of relation and the best pairing for both interacted control loops. Genetic Algorithm (GA), as one of the most prestigious techniques, was used to analyze the best controller tunings based on factor parameters of iterations, populations and mutation rates to the applied First Order plus Dead Time (FOPDT) models in the multivariable loop. Amid simulation analysis, GA analysis’s reliability was justified by comparing its performance with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) analysis. The research outcome was visualized by generating the process responses from the LOOP-PRO’s multi-tank function, whereby the GA tunings’ responses were compared with the conventional tuning methods. In conclusion, the result exhibits that the GA optimization analysis has successfully demonstrated the most satisfactory performance for both servo and regulatory controls

    PID Controller Design of Nonlinear System using a New Modified Particle Swarm Optimization with Time-Varying Constriction Coefficient

    The proportional integral derivative (PID) controllers have been widely used in most process control systems for a long time. However, it is a very important problem how to choose PID parameters, because these parameters give a great influence on the control performance. Especially, it is difficult to tune these parameters for nonlinear systems. In this paper, a new modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) is presented to search for optimal PID parameters for such system. The proposed algorithm is to modify constriction coefficient which is nonlinearly decreased time-varying for improving the final accuracy and the convergence speed of PSO. To validate the control performance of the proposed method, a typical nonlinear system control, a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) process, is illustrated. The results testify that a new modified PSO algorithm can perform well in the nonlinear PID control system design in term of lesser overshoot, rise-time, settling-time, IAE and ISE.Keywords: PID controller, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO),constriction factor, nonlinear system

    Comparison of LQR and PID Controller Tuning Using PSO for Coupled Tank System

    Coupled Tank System is one of the widely used applications in industries. Like other process control, it require suitable controller to obtain the good system performances. Hence, this paper presents the study of Coupled Tank System using LQR and PID controller. Both controller parameters are tuned using Single-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The performance of the system is compared based on the transient response in term of of Rise Time (Tr), SettlingTime (Ts), Steady State Error (ess) and Overshoot (OS).Simulation is conducted within MATLAB environment to verify the performances of the system. The result shows that both controller can be tuned using PSO, while LQR controller give slightly better results compared to PID controller

    A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

    Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

    Multi-input multi-output proportional integral derivative controller tuning based on improved particle swarm optimization

    The PID controller is regarded as a dependable and reliable controller for process industry systems. Many researchers have devoted time and attention to PID controller tuning and they all agree that PID controllers are very important for control systems. A PID equation is very sensitive; its parameters must always be varied following the specific application to increase performance, such as by increasing the system’s responsiveness. PID controllers still have many problems despite their importance for control systems in industries. The problem of big overshoot on the conventional gain tuning is one of the serious problems. Researchers use the PSO algorithm to try and overcome those problems. The tuning of the MIMO PID controller based on the PSO algorithm shows many disadvantages such as high-quality control with a short settle time, steady-state error, and periodical step response. The traditional PSO algorithm is very sensitive and it sometimes affects the quality of good PID controller tuning. This research has proposed a new equation for improving the PSO algorithm. The proposed algorithm is the combination of linearly decreasing inertia weight and chaotic inertia weight, after which a control factor was introduced as an exponential factor. This was very useful for simulations as it is adjustable. The Matlab simulation results of the experiments show that the simulations as it is adjustable. The Matlab simulation results of the experiments show that the new proposed equation converges faster and it gives the best fitness compared to linear inertia weight and oscillating inertia weight and other old equations. The MIMO PID controller system that consists of four plants was tuned based on the new proposed equation for the PSO algorithm (LCPSO). The optimized results show the best rise time, settling time, time delays, and steady-state compared to the systems that are tuned using the old equations. The exploration was directed at considering the impact of using the PSO calculation as an instrument for MIMO PID tuning. The results obtained in the examination reveal that the PSO tuning output improved reactions and can be applied to various system models in the measure control industry. The results for the MIMO PID controller tuned using PSO were assessed using integral square error (ISE), integral absolute error (IAE), and the integral of time expanded by absolute error (ITAE). The five well-known benchmark functions were also used to endorse the feasibility of the improved PSO and excellent results in terms of convergence and best fitness were attained.Electrical and Mining EngineeringM.
