Cross-layer Scheduling with Feedback for QoS Support
AbstractNext-Generation Networks (NGNs) will support Quality of Service (QoS) over a mixed wired and wireless IP-based infrastructure. A relative model of service differentiation in Differentiated Services architecture is a scalable solution for delivering multimedia traffic. However, considering the dynamic nature of radio channels typically, it is difficult to achieve a given service provisioning working at the IP and lower layers separately as in the classical approach, without a run-time adaptation of the system towards the target quality. This work describes an IP cross-layer scheduler able to support a Proportional Differentiation Model (PDM) for delay guarantees with content-awareness, also over wireless. The key idea is to leverage feedbacks from the lower layers about the actual delays experienced by packets in order to tune at run-time the priority of the IP service classes in a closed-loop control with the objective of supporting a PDM at the network node on the whole, considering the cumulative latency in crossing the first three layers of the protocol stack, as relevant for the end-user. A simulation analysis demonstrates the prominent improvements in reliability and robustness of the proposal in the case of time-variant performance of the MAC and PHY layers with respect to the classical non-cross-layer approach and the open- loop control. Furthermore, considerations on the required functionality and likely deployment scenarios highlight the scalability and backward compatibility of the designed solution in supporting the concept of network transparency for the delivering of critical applications, as of the e-health domain
Tactical communication systems based on civil standards: Modeling in the MiXiM framework
In this paper, new work is presented belonging to an ongoing study, which
evaluates civil communication standards as potential candidates for the future
military Wide Band Waveforms (WBWFs). After an evaluation process of possible
candidates presented in [2], the selection process in [1] showed that the IEEE
802.11n OFDM could be a possible military WBWF candidate, but it should be
further investigated first in order to enhance or even replace critical
modules. According to this, some critical modules of the physical layer has
been further analyzed in [3] regarding the susceptibility of the OFDM signal
under jammer influences. However, the critical modules of the MAC layer (e.g.,
probabilistic medium access CSMA/CA) have not been analysed. In fact, it was
only suggested in [2] to replace this medium access by the better suited
Unified Slot Allocation Protocol - Multiple Access (USAP-MA) [4]. In this
regard, the present contribution describes the design paradigms of the new MAC
layer and explains how the proposed WBWF candidate has been modelled within the

Handover in Mobile WiMAX Networks: The State of Art and Research Issues
The next-generation Wireless Metropolitan Area
Networks, using the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access (WiMAX) as the core technology based on the IEEE
802.16 family of standards, is evolving as a Fourth-Generation
(4G) technology. With the recent introduction of mobility management
frameworks in the IEEE 802.16e standard, WiMAX
is now placed in competition to the existing and forthcoming
generations of wireless technologies for providing ubiquitous
computing solutions. However, the success of a good mobility
framework largely depends on the capability of performing fast
and seamless handovers irrespective of the deployed architectural
scenario. Now that the IEEE has defined the Mobile WiMAX
(IEEE 802.16e) MAC-layer handover management framework,
the Network Working Group (NWG) of the WiMAX Forum
is working on the development of the upper layers. However,
the path to commercialization of a full-fledged WiMAX mobility
framework is full of research challenges. This article focuses on
potential handover-related research issues in the existing and
future WiMAX mobility framework. A survey of these issues in
the MAC, Network and Cross-Layer scenarios is presented along
with discussion of the different solutions to those challenges. A
comparative study of the proposed solutions, coupled with some
insights to the relevant issues, is also included
Enabling Technologies for Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications: From PHY and MAC Layer Perspectives
© 1998-2012 IEEE. Future 5th generation networks are expected to enable three key services-enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine type communications and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). As per the 3rd generation partnership project URLLC requirements, it is expected that the reliability of one transmission of a 32 byte packet will be at least 99.999% and the latency will be at most 1 ms. This unprecedented level of reliability and latency will yield various new applications, such as smart grids, industrial automation and intelligent transport systems. In this survey we present potential future URLLC applications, and summarize the corresponding reliability and latency requirements. We provide a comprehensive discussion on physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer techniques that enable URLLC, addressing both licensed and unlicensed bands. This paper evaluates the relevant PHY and MAC techniques for their ability to improve the reliability and reduce the latency. We identify that enabling long-term evolution to coexist in the unlicensed spectrum is also a potential enabler of URLLC in the unlicensed band, and provide numerical evaluations. Lastly, this paper discusses the potential future research directions and challenges in achieving the URLLC requirements
Energy Efficient Reduced Complexity Multi-Service, Multi-Channel Scheduling Techniques
The need for energy efficient communications is essential in current and next-generation wireless communications systems. A large component of energy expenditure in mobile devices is in the mobile radio interface. Proper scheduling and resource allocation techniques that exploit instantaneous and long-term average knowledge of the channel, queue state and quality of service parameters can be used to improve the energy efficiency of communication.
This thesis focuses on exploiting queue and channel state information as well as quality of service parameters in order to design energy efficient scheduling techniques. The proposed designs are for multi-stream, multi-channel systems and in general have high computational complexity. The large contributions of this thesis are in both the design of optimal/near-optimal scheduling/resource allocation schemes for these systems as well as proposing complexity reduction methods in their design.
Methods are proposed for both a MIMO downlink system as well as an LTE uplink system. The effect of power efficiency on quality of service parameters is well studied as well as complexity/efficiency comparisons between optimal/near optimal allocation
Optimization of the interoperability and dynamic spectrum management in mobile communications systems beyond 3G
The future wireless ecosystem will heterogeneously integrate a number of overlapped Radio
Access Technologies (RATs) through a common platform. A major challenge arising from the
heterogeneous network is the Radio Resource Management (RRM) strategy. A Common RRM
(CRRM) module is needed in order to provide a step toward network convergence. This work
aims at implementing HSDPA and IEEE 802.11e CRRM evaluation tools.
Innovative enhancements to IEEE 802.11e have been pursued on the application of cross-layer
signaling to improve Quality of Service (QoS) delivery, and provide more efficient usage of
radio resources by adapting such parameters as arbitrary interframe spacing, a differentiated
backoff procedure and transmission opportunities, as well as acknowledgment policies (where
the most advised block size was found to be 12). Besides, the proposed cross-layer algorithm
dynamically changes the size of the Arbitration Interframe Space (AIFS) and the Contention
Window (CW) duration according to a periodically obtained fairness measure based on the Signal
to Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) and transmission time, a delay constraint and the
collision rate of a given machine. The throughput was increased in 2 Mb/s for all the values of
the load that have been tested whilst satisfying more users than with the original standard. For
the ad hoc mode an analytical model was proposed that allows for investigating collision free
communications in a distributed environment.
The addition of extra frequency spectrum bands and an integrated CRRM that enables spectrum
aggregation was also addressed. RAT selection algorithms allow for determining the gains obtained
by using WiFi as a backup network for HSDPA. The proposed RAT selection algorithm
is based on the load of each system, without the need for a complex management system. Simulation
results show that, in such scenario, for high system loads, exploiting localization while
applying load suitability optimization based algorithm, can provide a marginal gain of up to
450 kb/s in the goodput. HSDPA was also studied in the context of cognitive radio, by considering
two co-located BSs operating at different frequencies (in the 2 and 5 GHz bands) in the
same cell. The system automatically chooses the frequency to serve each user with an optimal
General Multi-Band Scheduling (GMBS) algorithm. It was shown that enabling the access to
a secondary band, by using the proposed Integrated CRRM (iCRRM), an almost constant gain
near 30 % was obtained in the throughput with the proposed optimal solution, compared to a
system where users are first allocated in one of the two bands and later not able to handover
between the bands. In this context, future cognitive radio scenarios where IEEE 802.11e ad hoc
modes will be essential for giving access to the mobile users have been proposed
