AbstractThis research examines the cover images of two inflight magazines鈥擴lisse (Alitalia) and Blue Wings (Finnair)鈥攁s a method for airlines to manage their impression. Drawing on concept of impression management, the study focuses on the visual strategies the cover images employ in order to shape the audience's perception of the airlines. The data consists of 90 cover images published between January 2016 and February 2020. A visual rhetorical analysis was applied to examine the visual construction of the cover images and their functions. The findings show that the cover images of Ulisse and Blue Wings employed different strategies of visual rhetoric as part of their impression management. Whereas Alitalia seemed to strive for the image of a luxury airline, Finnair endeavored to create an image of an airline for ordinary people. Theoretically, this study contributes to the current knowledge of rhetorical approach to visual impression management in corporate communications. Methodologically, the study advances the research on corporate impression management by applying an analysis of visual rhetoric

Interest in image mosaicking has been spurred by a wide variety of research and management needs. However, for large-scale applications, remote sensing image mosaicking usually requires significant computational capabilities. Several studies have attempted to apply parallel computing to improve image mosaicking algorithms and to speed up calculation process. The state of the art of this field has not yet been summarized, which is, however, essential for a better understanding and for further research of image mosaicking parallelism on a large scale. This paper provides a perspective on the current state of image mosaicking parallelization for large scale applications. We firstly introduce the motivation of image mosaicking parallel for large scale application, and analyze the difficulty and problem of parallel image mosaicking at large scale such as scheduling with huge number of dependent tasks, programming with multiple-step procedure, dealing with frequent I/O operation. Then we summarize the existing studies of parallel computing in image mosaicking for large scale applications with respect to problem decomposition and parallel strategy, parallel architecture, task schedule strategy and implementation of image mosaicking parallelization. Finally, the key problems and future potential research directions for image mosaicking are addressed

Objective: The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate how current research ethics policies and procedures can fail to achieve meaningful privacy and consent from human subjects in data-related research areas, and additionally, to provide the beginnings of a supplementary framework that researchers can use to define meaningful consent. Methods: I will illustrate failures of current research ethics involving lapses in privacy and/or consent from three case studies of published research based on user data from Facebook, OkCupid and Ashley Madison. Results: The standard mechanisms by which we measure ethical soundness is producing morally questionable research when applied to some data-related research. While the policies and procedures of journals and regulatory bodies need to adapt to meet these new contexts, researchers can take ownership of the ethical ramifications of their work. Conclusions: I submit that researchers need to develop and train in a new subset set of ethics, called Data Ethics, or the applied framework of ethical principles in data-related inquiry, and beginning with a meaningful definition and test for consent is a good start

    High-Speed Rail and Equine Issues

    Get PDF
Community concerns have been raised about the possible negative impacts of high-speed rail (HSR) service on equestrian areas. Although much is known about the impact of aircraft noise on wild and domestic animals, relatively little information is available on the potential impact of HSR service on equine populations. This study will explore possible conflicts between HSR construction and operations in areas used for equestrian ranching, recreation, and related activities, and identify geographic areas where such conflicts could occur

Weathering with: Afterlife Treatment of Architecture

    Get PDF
When thinking about afterlife of architecture, one would imagine architecture鈥檚 incapability of maintain its form due to its deterioration. Humans tear down buildings to construct new buildings, or update building by replacing damaged parts. However recent study indicates that the traditional human-architecture relationship will end in the near future due to population increase and global warming. As humans lose more and more habitable lands, the remaining architecture on inhabitable lands will be abandoned. This raises the question of who then decides the fate of the abandoned architecture. This thesis sees weathering as the answer to the question and reimagines the human-architecture relationship through the lens of weathering. This thesis project is interested in proposing an architectural design that accepts weathering architecture and converts conventional modern architecture-- which has been consumed for a certain program and demolished afterward-- to architecture that embraces slow degeneration while interacting with its changing context. The objective of the proposed study is to explore the process of architectural materials being weathered within a certain time frame to contemplate how weathered architecture would fit in a future society. Oyster shells are the key material for the weathering architecture because of its capability of accommodating marine ecosystem. Its porous surfaces play various roles in each weathering stage, from air purification system to fertilizer for eelgrass. The changing roles are determined by its relationship to the context and specific human activities. The concept of letting architecture components remain the same while changing its functions is based on the project鈥檚 design philosophy that human operations will not become the decider of the weathering architecture

Center for music education : Villavicencio, Colombia

VillavicensesThe Music training center is a project planned as a cultural facility located in Villavicencio, Colombia, city where exists a deep crisis as throughout its whole territory. This crisis is based principally in two aspects: the dilution of the folklore in its citizens, and the poor network of facilities in the city and the region; which lead me to think that for this reason, it is indispensable to develop a project that not only recovers the cultural identity of the Villavicenses but also gives to the people different life options rooted in their traditions. The proposal will attack the lack of identity of the native people and the dissemination of their customs through an architectural project that responds to the spatial needs and to the serious difficulties that the population is facing. Problems expressed along the investigation that work as reasons for the materialization of this proposal, as the little relationship of the urban facility to the place where it is located; the relationship between corruption and the weak network of buildings and public projects; and how the inactivity of citizens (especially teenagers) in the majority of time, is transformed into the crime that has affected the Colombian nation through the years. I decide to approach to these problems by taking into account some of the studies of different specialists who agree giving answers related to the music as solution for these issues, as for example Robert Zatorre, professor in neurology and neurosurgery which expresses that it is impossible to find social rites or important moments in life without music, since its main function is the social cohesion; what suggests to me to believe that it is indispensable generate consensual relationships in all the social groups of any community in order to achieve a correct harmony in at least the majority of its inhabitants. This link can be achieved by common interests or tastes like for example music, which, according to Juan Rogelio Ram铆rez Paredes in his thesis of sociology, bases a collective identity reflected in an image, and permanently builds socialization spaces. Although we find great importance to music with different experts in child pedagogy and licensed in this area, that agree that the music helps and facilitates the different learnings and the way of accessing knowledge, and that it must be treated in a way seriously and carefully as it motives the children to social integration and helps them in their psychomotor, cognitive and emotional development. The project, it is developed according to the social problems already identified and described above and is proposed architecturally from the recognition of the context in which it is located. The musical training center is located in the Macarena neighborhood, a low-income neighborhood that collides with different education centers, parks of great importance for the city and the football stadium. The shape of the facility is born from the projection of lines of the urban footprint and seeks to be a centripetal element, which picks up the different users of the other facilities and centrifugal through its public space that carries and connects with the aforementioned buildings. Music is the best option to recover the traditions of a community that little to little has lost its customs since it works as a social connector that achieves a collective identity like in the case of the llanera music and creates a fine form of social interaction.Arquitecto (a)Pregrad

Understanding novel metaphors. A milestone in the developmental trajectory of children with agenesis of the corpus callosum?

    Get PDF
This study explores novel metaphor comprehension in a 7.2-year-old child (conventionally called RJ) with complete and isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). RJ鈥檚 cognitive level was adequate for his age as well as most of his linguistic competencies. The child鈥檚 performance was compared to typically developing (TD) controls on a test assessing novel metaphor comprehension for preschoolers. RJ鈥檚 performance showed a delay of about three years in relation to the expected level for his age, and also a significant gap compared to the TDs. The results highlighted the possibility to detect weaknesses in understanding novel metaphors in children with ACC, in spite of their apparently adequate linguistic capabilities. An early detection of a weakness in this area can pave the way to neurolinguistic treatment in order to enhance the understanding of nonliteral meaning, which, in the developmental trajectory, will be increasingly involved in everyday life communication. Future research should explore more in-depth a capability that intrinsically requires high interconnectivity, such as novel metaphor comprehension, in a brain in development where the major tract connecting the two hemispheres is missing
