Places of Memory and Oblivion in the Cultural Landscapes of the Polish Jurassic Highland. References and Extensions
Publikacja powstała w ramach projektu badawczego „Miejsca pamięci i zapomnienia. Interdyscyplinarne badania północnych terenów Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej”. | The publication was prepared as part of the project Places of Memory and Oblivion. Interdisciplinary Studies of the Northern Areas of the Polish Jurassic Highland.Prezentowany tom zamyka serię 6 opublikowanych wcześniej raportów badawczych, przygotowanych w ramach projektu „Miejsca pamięci i zapomnienia. Badania interdyscyplinarne północnych terenów Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej”, zrealizowanego na Wydziale Filozoficzno-Historycznym Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w latach 2014–2019 w ramach Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki Ministerstwa Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego.
This book contains a selection of theoretical works and photo essays as well as a chronicle of photo competitions organised in the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts at Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University since 2008, which is meant as the record of thoughts related to the specific, omnipresent though little examined so far, realm of the theory of architecture, i.e. photography. Its specific variant closely related to the building practice is called architectural photography. This monograph, however, is not restricted by means of the said definition and attempts at a slightly broader description of the phenomenon, reaching beyond its boundaries.Monografia powstała w ramach projektu badawczego nr WAiSP/DS/4/201
Toutowie : język i pamięć w ustanawianiu wspólnoty Wiślan w Banacie
The monograph is devoted to the issue of collective memory of an ethnic minority
living in the Ostojićevo village in the Serbian Banat, whose roots trace back to the
town of Wisła, located in the Cieszyn County. The members of this community are
the descendants of 19th-century labor migrants who mined and brewed saltpeter for
the purposes of the Austrian army, moving within the borders of one country from
the Austrian Silesia to the southern reaches of the Habsburg dominion. With time,
Evangelical saltpeter brewers started to settle in Banat, where the local Hungarian
community named the newcomers the Touts, a moniker which comes from the word
Tōth, used to denote settlers from Slovakia. It is estimated that currently, the size
of this community oscillates between 120 and 150 people.
The publication aligns itself with research on the relationship between language,
culture and society, underscoring the determining role of language in one’s
perception of the world, interpretation of social and cultural phenomena as well as
its function in consolidating communities. Linguistics of memory, adopted as the
research perspective, aims to showcase the interdependence between language as
a medium of memory as well as a means of its preservation, and between the culture
of a particular language community and its discourses (including the discourses
of memory) that shape collective identification. The monograph shows — in the
context of the transformations in the Tout collective memory — the way in which
the language code influences the shape of that memory, as well as the way in which
language, as a memory-shaping tool, can also serve as a tool of shedding inherited
trauma, which, in turn, results in a transformation of the group’s identity. Due to
the numerous factors that influence language as a tool in the process of shaping
the collective memory of the community, which, as a result, influences the way the members of that community identify, the analysis has been conducted within
a very precisely defined social context, taking into account historical determinants
that constitute the foundation of the current social and political situation of the
Tout community, as well as the inter-ethnic relationships in the local community.
To provide a background for the analysis of the social memory of the Touts,
the monograph describes the linguistic and cultural conditions of the multiethnic
community of Ostojićevo. It discusses the linguistic competence of the minority
group, taking into account their social arrangement, which includes different spheres
of life: the Vistula dialect is characteristic of the sphere of family life; Slovak is the
domain of the religious sphere; Hungarian is used in contact with neighbors and
colleagues; Serbian is the official language of education and media, while Polish is
used when interacting with the citizens of Poland as well as the officials at the Polish
Embassy in Belgrade. The description of cultural practices (on the example of wedding
customs) as well as inter-ethnic relationships in the rural society, on the other
hand, unveils the dynamics of the transformation of objective markers of identity
and the functioning of cultural patterns in specific instances of contact with others,
which result in partial assimilation of the Tout community with the majority groups.
The description of the communicative memory of the Touts, passed down in
narratives of the past from generation to generation constitutes a major part of
the monograph. It discusses stories of the ancestors, recorded during ethnographic
field research, which — next to denomination and language — shape the Tout
community. Intergenerational transfer, which solidifies the ethos of the Tout Evangelicals,
allows them to participate in the collective knowledge and memory, which
constitute the foundation of constructing the awareness of collective belonging.
Moreover, the monograph describes the process of folklorization of remembrance
stories, which has emerged as a result of conventionalization and objectivization of
intergenerational transfer.
The current transformations of communicative memory into cultural memory
result in changes in the ethnic identity of the Ostojićevo Vistulans from local to
national—Polish. The internalization of a new collective memory based on the Polish
national symbolic universe is the result of actions on the part of various institutions
of power, understood as various institutions of public life. As a result, new ways of
affirming the Polish national identity appear, including linguistic tools (poems and
songs in Polish) and creating new places of memory (Polish House) or introducing
ways to differentiate between us and them (costumes for Polish folk music groups).
The monograph is supplemented by an analysis of the rhetoric of memory in media
messages, including Serbian television and documentaries, which, as multimedia
texts of culture, emerge as carriers of memory, playing a large role in the shaping
of collective identity.
Memory, which reveals itself in narratives and discourses about the past as one
of the ways to categorize the world (owing to the collectively sanctioned selection of
what should be remembered and what should be forgotten), constitutes the basis of
inculturation and identity creation among the members of a community. It should
be noted, moreover, that the further we reach with our memory, the more difficult
it becomes to verify the memories against reality, and the easier it become to notice the influence of language and culture on the picture it paints. The observation of
the transitional stage between communicative memory and cultural memory, which
can be currently witnessed in the Ostojićevo Vistulan community allows us to witness
the role of language (understood in the broader communicative and cultural
context) in transformation of memory and the following changes in identification
Społeczne znaczenie miejskich przestrzeni publicznych
The starting point for the observations made in the monograph The Social Importance of
Urban Public Spaces is the claim that if one wants to speak of the city these days as something
more than just an administrative, demographic and economic structure, it is necessary to provide
public spaces in which the denizens of the city could experience interaction both with other people
as well as with the urban space itself. The way in which the inhabitants of the city interact with
and confront the urban public spaces becomes, therefore, a singularly interesting research topic. It
is, in fact, a multifaceted process, closely connected with both the everyday functioning in those
spaces as well as the reflection upon their significance for the city or their role in creating the
urban and subjective identity. The aforementioned phenomena are, in turn, connected with the
varying manners of experiencing and defining the public space.
The experience of the urban public space constitutes the primary research topic. In order to
conduct the analysis of that experience, the author assumed the culturalist perspective, traditional
for social sciences, which assumes the analysis of the social reality from the perspective of an
individual. In light of that, the urban public space has been defined as an area in the city which
is accessible, appealing, facilitating contact with other users of the city, aesthetic, and one which
invites the people to meet, act and feel safe.
The research findings analysed in this monograph come from 2012, when the preliminary research
was conducted in three cities in the Upper Silesia: Jastrzębie-Zdrój, Tychy, and Żory. In each of those
cities, the research sample averaged over 300 respondents. Overall, 982 people were asked to take part
in the research conducted with the help of a questionnaire. In the monograph, the author compares
those results with earlier results of research conducted in Katowice and Gliwice by the author himself,
or with cooperation with other researchers. The use of that data, alongside the most recent research
findings, allows to come to more general conclusions which go beyond the scope of case studies.
The collected data allowed to formulate several conclusions regarding the social experience
of urban public spaces. It is possible to enumerate in each city a number of spaces which are
considered by the inhabitants to be good public spaces. Those usually entail marketplaces or other
squares located in the city centre, as well as attractive recreational spaces and parks.
From the perspective of the inhabitants of the cities and the users of public spaces, the most
important feature of such spaces is their multifunctionality, which allows their users to conduct
various activities. This, in turn, epitomises the importance of marketplaces, squares and parks. The latter are, in turn, particularly important for the recreational activities conducted within the
urban public spaces, as they constitute important locations in which people decide to spend their
leisure time. Thus, both parks and other urban public spaces remain in direct competition with
people’s homes as well as other places located outside of the city boundaries.
Even though the research did not point to any elements which could be classified as “the
fear of the urban space,” the inhabitants of the cities in question are charaterised by significant
social passivity. Over 30% of respondents do not participate in freely available events which take
place in urban public spaces. The only events which manage to attract larger percentages of the
city inhabitants are fairs, free concerts and religious events. Social, political or civil activities do
not constitute an important way of interacting with the urban space.
On the basis of the theory of spatial value, a claim has been made that city centres, even in
those cities in which those centres are either lacking or difficult to establish, evoke for the most
part more positive associations than shopping malls, which, for the majority of respondents, are
bland and described usually in terms of shopping arrangements. Therefore, echoing the concept
of spatial value, coined by Florian Znaniecki, and the division of values, coined by Aleksander
Wallis, it would be possible to consider city centres to possess existential spatial values, while
shopping malls posses only functional spatial values.
Such spaces influence the identity of the subjects, to a certain degree, particularly that structure
of it which could be called after Peter Weichhart individual spatial identity. Despite a high
level of identification with the city and its inhabitants, there exists only a minority of the city
inhabitants which declare that they do posses a space which would strengthen their relationship
with the city, i.e. facilitate the creation of individual spatial identity.
On the basis of the research findings presented in this monograph, it would be possible to
differentiate between six social roles of urban public spaces: functional, interactive, symbolic,
axiological, identical and civic. Their significance in contemporary cities varies on a case by case
basis. From the perspective of the city inhabitants, the functional role remains the most important,
while the civic role is considered the least important
Teorie dyskursu w perspektywie socjologicznej
Otóż najbardziej trafną i najbardziej
syntetyczną odpowiedź przynosi słowo-klucz: wielość. Wielość możliwych semantycznych
identyfikacji stanowi źródło ambiwalencji. I stanowi źródło problemu.
Podejmujemy próbę wprowadzenia Czytelnika w grunt grząski i niedookreślony.
odsłonach.2 A zatem: wielość i różnorodność. Ten zaledwie pobieżny ogląd wskazuje na następujące zastosowania (znaczenia) przedmiotowej kategorii: „dyskurs konstytucyjny”, „dyskurs
politologiczny”, „dyskurs medialny”, „dyskurs fikcyjny”, „dyskurs cielesny”, „dyskurs miłosny”, „dyskurs poznawczy”, „dyskurs publiczny”, „dyskurs nowoczesności”, „dyskurs krytyczny”, „dyskurs
kolonialny”, „dyskurs globalizacyjny”, „dyskurs codzienny”, „dyskurs polityczny”, „dyskurs
dogmatyczny”, „dyskurs religijny”, „dyskurs nieczysty”, „dyskurs oświeceniowy”, „dyskurs
antropologiczny”, „dyskurs prasowy”, „dyskurs władzy”, „dyskurs nauki”, „dyskurs historyczny”,
„dyskurs kulturowy”, „dyskurs edukacyjny”, „dyskurs antysemicki”, „dyskurs postzależnościowy”,
wybraną stronę sceny politycznej obfitują we wtręty w postaci jakiegoś „dyskursu”. Aktorzy szeroko
pojętej sfery publicznej co rusz odkrywają jakieś „dyskursy”. Wydaje się, że to konstrukt, który
dobiega (żeby nie powiedzieć: straszy) zewsząd.
Ten to konstrukt stanowił będzie przedmiot naszych rozważań w perspektywie socjologicznej.
To jedno z fundamentalnych założeń metodologicznych, któremu będziemy dochowywać
wierności w toku niniejszego wywodu
Moc narrativum : idee biologii we współczesnym dyskursie humanistycznym
The so far abiding natural history paradigm has been expanded of yet. Nowadays,
its core constitutes information, whereas its investigation has led biological
sciences to neo-evolutionary solutions and theories under a common
label of the “third culture” . The book presents these changes, looking at their
consequences for the humanistic sciences. The author also formulates a thesis
and proves that a new culture theory, close to the diagnosis of the postmodernist
philosophy and sociology of culture (Baudrilliard, Foucault, Lyotard)
has been created within natural history, especially due to the theory of
Richard Dawkin’s selfish gene, and its extrapolation through memetics. The
theory rests on the conception of memo and evolution of the postgenetic information,
shaping an idiosphere, i.e. a stage of evolution in the Earth following
a biosphere. The author outlines her own memetics research programme, criticising
its achievements so far, and drawing conclusions from a comparison of
memetics with other theories of the “third culture” , especially with the chaos
theory. The assumptions of this very thoery, and a synthesis of culturological
investigations conducted in the area of the natural history discourses, has
led the author of the work to a narrativum hypothesis — an attractor of an
idiosphere’s universal phase space, a basin of attracting thoughts, speech and
ideas. Memetics, rebuilt according to the research proposal presented in the
book, reveals, at the same time, new research possibilities as an interdisciplinary
theory, as well as a potentially new methodology of humanistic sciences,
including narratology and media studies. The evidence of its efficiency
and usefulness in research on life and forms of ideas in an idiosphere belongs
to the near past which can totally change our understanding of culture
