Deep Learning Brasil at ABSAPT 2022: Portuguese Transformer Ensemble Approaches

Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) is a task whose objective is to classify the individual sentiment polarity of all entities, called aspects, in a sentence. The task is composed of two subtasks: Aspect Term Extraction (ATE), identify all aspect terms in a sentence; and Sentiment Orientation Extraction (SOE), given a sentence and its aspect terms, the task is to determine the sentiment polarity of each aspect term (positive, negative or neutral). This article presents we present our participation in Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis in Portuguese (ABSAPT) 2022 at IberLEF 2022. We submitted the best performing systems, achieving new state-of-the-art results on both subtasks.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, In Proceedings of the Iberian Languages Evaluation Forum (IberLEF 2022), Online. EVALITA 2020: Overview of the 7th evaluation campaign of natural language processing and speech tools for Italian

The Evaluation Campaign of Natural Language Processing and Speech Tools for Italian (EVALITA) is the biennial initiative aimed at promoting the development of language and speech technologies for the Italian language. EVALITA is promoted by the Italian Association of Computational Linguistics (AILC) and it is endorsed by the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA) and the Italian Association for Speech Sciences (AISV). EVALITA provides a shared framework where different systems and approaches can be scientifically evaluated and compared with each other with respect to a large variety of tasks, suggested and organized by the Italian research community. The proposed tasks represent scientific challenges where methods, resources, and systems can be tested against shared benchmarks representing linguistic open issues or real world applications, possibly in a multilingual and/or multi-modal perspective. The collected data sets provide big opportunities for scientists to explore old and new problems concerning NLP in Italian as well as to develop solutions and to discuss the NLP-related issues within the community. Some tasks are traditionally present in the evaluation campaign, while others are completely new. This paper introduces the tasks proposed at EVALITA 2020 and provides an overview to the participants and systems whose descriptions and obtained results are reported in these Proceedings

    App2Check @ ATE_ABSITA 2020: Aspect Term Extraction and Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis

In this paper we describe and present the results of the system we specifically developed and submitted for our participation to the ATE_ABSITA 2020 evaluation campaign on the Aspect Term Extraction (ATE), Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA), and Sentiment Analysis (SA) tasks. The official results show that App2Check ranks first in all of the three tasks, reaching a F1 score which is 0.14236 higher than the second best system in the ATE task and 0.11943 higher in the ABSA task; it shows a Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) that is 0.13075 lower than the second classified in the SA task

Lessons Learned from EVALITA 2020 and Thirteen Years of Evaluation of Italian Language Technology

This paper provides a summary of the 7th Evaluation Campaign of Natural Language Processing and Speech Tools for Italian (EVALITA2020) which was held online on December 17th, due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 edition of Evalita included 14 different tasks belonging to five research areas, namely: (i) Affect, Hate, and Stance, (ii) Creativity and Style, (iii) New Challenges in Long-standing Tasks, (iv) Semantics and Multimodality, (v) Time and Diachrony. This paper provides a description of the tasks and the key findings from the analysis of participant outcomes. Moreover, it provides a detailed analysis of the participants and task organizers which demonstrates the growing interest with respect to this campaign. Finally, a detailed analysis of the evaluation of tasks across the past seven editions is provided; this allows to assess how the research carried out by the Italian community dealing with Computational Linguistics has evolved in terms of popular tasks and paradigms during the last 13 years

A deep Natural Language Inference predictor without language-specific training data

In this paper we present a technique of NLP to tackle the problem of inference relation (NLI) between pairs of sentences in a target language of choice without a language-specific training dataset. We exploit a generic translation dataset, manually translated, along with two instances of the same pre-trained model - the first to generate sentence embeddings for the source language, and the second fine-tuned over the target language to mimic the first. This technique is known as Knowledge Distillation. The model has been evaluated over machine translated Stanford NLI test dataset, machine translated Multi-Genre NLI test dataset, and manually translated RTE3-ITA test dataset. We also test the proposed architecture over different tasks to empirically demonstrate the generality of the NLI task. The model has been evaluated over the native Italian ABSITA dataset, on the tasks of Sentiment Analysis, Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, and Topic Recognition. We emphasise the generality and exploitability of the Knowledge Distillation technique that outperforms other methodologies based on machine translation, even though the former was not directly trained on the data it was tested over.Comment: Conference: ICIAP202
