    Overview of PAN 2020: Authorship Verification, Celebrity Profiling, Profiling Fake News Spreaders on Twitter, and Style Change Detection

    [EN] We briefly report on the four shared tasks organized as part of the PAN 2020 evaluation lab on digital text forensics and authorship analysis. Each tasks is introduced, motivated, and the results obtained are presented. Altogether, the four tasks attracted 230 registrations, yielding 83 successful submissions. This, and the fact that we continue to invite the submissions of software rather than its run output using the TIRA experimentation platform, marks for a good start into the second decade of PAN evaluations labs.We thank Symanto for sponsoring the ex aequo award for the two best performing systems at the author profiling shared task of this year on Profiling fake news spreaders on Twitter.     Experimental Analysis of the Relevance of Features and Effects on Gender Classification Models for Social Media Author Profiling

    [Abstract] Automatic user profiling from social networks has become a popular task due to its commercial applications (targeted advertising, market studies...). Automatic profiling models infer demographic characteristics of social network users from their generated content or interactions. Users’ demographic information is also precious for more social worrying tasks such as automatic early detection of mental disorders. For this type of users’ analysis tasks, it has been shown that the way how they use language is an important indicator which contributes to the effectiveness of the models. Therefore, we also consider that for identifying aspects such as gender, age or user’s origin, it is interesting to consider the use of the language both from psycho-linguistic and semantic features. A good selection of features will be vital for the performance of retrieval, classification, and decision-making software systems. In this paper, we will address gender classification as a part of the automatic profiling task. We show an experimental analysis of the performance of existing gender classification models based on external corpus and baselines for automatic profiling. We analyse in-depth the influence of the linguistic features in the classification accuracy of the model.     Resumen de la tarea PoliticES en IberLEF 2023: Detección de Ideología Política en Español

    This paper describes PoliticES 2023, a shared task organized within the workshop IberLEF 2023 in the framework of the 39th edition of the International Conference of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing. This second edition of the task shares the goal of the first edition of PoliticES, which is to extract political ideology and other psychographic and demographic characteristics of users in social networks. What is new this year is that the traits are extracted from text clusters of users who share the same traits, and that celebrities have been included as a type of profession. This edition attracted 43 teams, of which 11 submitted results and 8 sent papers describing their systems. Most of the participants proposed Transformers-based approaches, but others also used traditional machine learning algorithms.Este artículo describe PoliticES 2023, una tarea organizada dentro del taller IberLEF 2023 en el marco de la 39 edición del Congreso Internacional de la Sociedad Española para el Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural. Esta segunda edición de la tarea comparte el objetivo de la primera edición de PoliticES, extraer la ideología política y otros rasgos psicográficos y demográficos de usuarios en redes sociales. Las novedades son que este año los rasgos se extraen de clústers de textos de usuarios que comparten los mismos rasgos y que se ha incluido celebridades como tipo de profesión. Esta edición ha atraído a 43 equipos, de los cuales 11 enviaron resultados y 8 presentaron artículos describiendo sus sistemas.     Psychographic Traits Identification based on political ideology: An author analysis study on spanish politicians tweets posted in 2020

    In general, people are usually more reluctant to follow advice and directions from politicians who do not have their ideology. In extreme cases, people can be heavily biased in favour of a political party at the same time that they are in sharp disagreement with others, which may lead to irrational decision making and can put people’s lives at risk by ignoring certain recommendations from the authorities. Therefore, considering political ideology as a psychographic trait can improve political micro-targeting by helping public authorities and local governments to adopt better communication policies during crises. In this work, we explore the reliability of determining psychographic traits concerning political ideology. Our contribution is twofold. On the one hand, we release the PoliCorpus-2020, a dataset composed by Spanish politicians’ tweets posted in 2020. On the other hand, we conduct two authorship analysis tasks with the aforementioned dataset: an author profiling task to extract demographic and psychographic traits, and an authorship attribution task to determine the author of an anonymous text in the political domain. Both experiments are evaluated with several neural network architectures grounded on explainable linguistic features, statistical features, and state-of-the-art transformers. In addition, we test whether the neural network models can be transferred to detect the political ideology of citizens. Our results indicate that the linguistic features are good indicators for identifying finegrained political affiliation, they boost the performance of neural network models when combined with embedding-based features, and they preserve relevant information when the models are tested with ordinary citizens. Besides, we found that lexical and morphosyntactic features are more effective on author profiling, whereas stylometric features are more effective in authorship attribution.publishedVersio

    A Decade of Shared Tasks in Digital Text Forensics at PAN

    [EN] Digital text forensics aims at examining the originality and credibility of information in electronic documents and, in this regard, to extract and analyze information about the authors of these documents. The research field has been substantially developed during the last decade. PAN is a series of shared tasks that started in 2009 and significantly contributed to attract the attention of the research community in well-defined digital text forensics tasks. Several benchmark datasets have been developed to assess the state-of-the-art performance in a wide range of tasks. In this paper, we present the evolution of both the examined tasks and the developed datasets during the last decade.     Bot and gender detection of twitter accounts using distortion and LSA notebook for PAN at CLEF 2019

    In this work, we present our approach for the Author Profiling task of PAN 2019. The task is divided into two sub-problems, bot, and gender detection, for two different languages: English and Spanish. For each instance of the problem and each language, we address the problem differently. We use an ensemble architecture to solve the Bot Detection for accounts that write in English and a single SVM for those who write in Spanish. For the Gender detection we use a single SVM architecture for both the languages, but we pre-process the tweets in a different way. Our final models achieve accuracy over the 90% in the bot detection task, while for the gender detection, of 84.17% and 77.61% respectively for the English and Spanish languages
