    Identification and Analysis of Factors Influencing the Efficiency of Web Development Team Projects from the Students’ Perspective

    The postgraduate subject “Web Technologies” is offered to engineering students who have different engineering backgrounds. The students have generally studied other computer programming and design methodologies in their engineering domain. The major learning objectives of this subject include being able to critically evaluate web technologies, apply web design methodologies to web based systems, and work efficiently with groups. To achieve these objectives, we have designed a web development process to apply to the major assessment task of developing a web system as a group.     Learned Query Superoptimization

    Traditional query optimizers are designed to be fast and stateless: each query is quickly optimized using approximate statistics, sent off to the execution engine, and promptly forgotten. Recent work on learned query optimization have shown that it is possible for a query optimizer to "learn from its mistakes," correcting erroneous query plans the next time a plan is produced. But what if query optimizers could avoid mistakes entirely? This paper presents the idea of learned query superoptimization. A new generation of query superoptimizers could autonomously experiment to discover optimal plans using exploration-driven algorithms, iterative Bayesian optimization, and program synthesis. While such superoptimizers will take significantly longer to optimize a given query, superoptimizers have the potential to massively accelerate a large number of important repetitive queries being executed on data systems today

    This paper presents a feasibility study of historic urban industrial rehabilitation projects for job creation in urban core neighborhoods. The study demonstrates the important position these buildings have held in historic neighborhoods throughout history, for economic diversification and as employment centers. The evidence suggests that these buildings are important for small business generation, cultural and historic preservation, and sustained neighborhood revitalization.     Ru–CeO2 and Ni–CeO2 Coated on Open-Cell Metallic Foams by Electrodeposition for the CO2 Methanation

    CO2 methanation structured catalysts, made by a layer of Ru–CeO2 or Ni–CeO2 (Ru/Ce = 3/97; Ni/Ce = 1/3 and 3/1) on open-cell NiCrAl foams, are prepared by electrodeposition and a subsequent calcination step. The performance of the catalysts at a space velocity of 320,000 mL gcat–1 h–1 in a feedstock with H2/CO2/N2 = 4/1/1 v/v, significantly depends on the Ni content and the preparation method. A low Ru or Ni content promotes the metal–CeO2 interaction, the formation of defects in CeO2 as well as the development of a lower amount of cracks in the coating; however, the catalysts show a poor CO2 conversion and selectivity to CH4. The CH4 production rate at low temperature largely increases for the high Ni loaded catalyst, 68.7 LCH4 gNi–1 h–1 at 350 °C oven temperature. This productivity is similar to the value obtained with a Ni3Ce1 pellet catalyst prepared by the coprecipitation method, a behavior not achievable for low Ru- and Ni-loaded catalysts

    Cross-layer Peer-to-Peer Computing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    The future information society is expected to rely heavily on wireless technology. Mobile access to the Internet is steadily gaining ground, and could easily end up exceeding the number of connections from the fixed infrastructure. Picking just one example, ad hoc networking is a new paradigm of wireless communication for mobile devices. Initially, ad hoc networking targeted at military applications as well as stretching the access to the Internet beyond one wireless hop. As a matter of fact, it is now expected to be employed in a variety of civilian applications. For this reason, the issue of how to make these systems working efficiently keeps the ad hoc research community active on topics ranging from wireless technologies to networking and application systems. In contrast to traditional wire-line and wireless networks, ad hoc networks are expected to operate in an environment in which some or all the nodes are mobile, and might suddenly disappear from, or show up in, the network. The lack of any centralized point, leads to the necessity of distributing application services and responsibilities to all available nodes in the network, making the task of developing and deploying application a hard task, and highlighting the necessity of suitable middleware platforms. This thesis studies the properties and performance of peer-to-peer overlay management algorithms, employing them as communication layers in data sharing oriented middleware platforms. The work primarily develops from the observation that efficient overlays have to be aware of the physical network topology, in order to reduce (or avoid) negative impacts of application layer traffic on the network functioning. We argue that cross-layer cooperation between overlay management algorithms and the underlying layer-3 status and protocols, represents a viable alternative to engineer effective decentralized communication layers, or eventually re-engineer existing ones to foster the interconnection of ad hoc networks with Internet infrastructures. The presented approach is twofold. Firstly, we present an innovative network stack component that supports, at an OS level, the realization of cross-layer protocol interactions.
