    Mixed Reality Applications for Safety Trainings in Wind Energy Sector: A Case Study

    The international renewable energy agency (IRENA) forecast that the wind industry will grow at an exponential rate in the coming decades. This enormous growth has created the need and demand for qualified workforce which includes engineers, technicians, and managers in the wind energy sector. Thus, the wind energy training sector needs to implement some innovative technologies in both safety and technical trainings to meet the growing industry demands and to create a qualified workforce. However, before finalizing on any innovative solution for safety training, the challenges that the wind energy training sector faces need to be analyzed. The biggest challenges for the wind energy training sector is to train the workers to work safely with large scale wind turbine structure and its components, working safely with high voltage and working in harsh marine environments. Wind power workers are often exposed to hazards that can result in fatalities or serious injuries due to these challenges. Therefore, the implemented innovative technology must ensure safety and improve efficiency of operations by being aware of the risks associated. However, the wind energy training sector is searching for cost effective solution especially related to remote training, when the technician is not able to attend the training physically. Moreover, the wind energy training sector is also looking for technology that can reduce human error and also reduce cognitive workload. Therefore, the use of innovative technology like mixed reality (MR) might provide potential benefits.MR includes the use of both the virtual reality (VR) which is a simulated immersive experience and the use of augmented reality (AR) which allows the person to see the real world, additionally overlaid with digital graphics and information in real time. However, there is a lack of clarity on how to effectively design mixed reality technologies in safety training of wind sector. There are technical challenges and gaps to identify the suitable hardware platform, suitable software platform and the associated tracking techniques. The purpose of this thesis is to develop: (1) the workflow, (2) the framework which will help to design mixed reality technologies in safety training of wind sector. Also to develop, (3) flowchart and (4) worksheet which will help to identify the critical training modules/scenarios and to identify the suitable type of technology (AR/VR/MR) needed for a particular scenario along with the suitable hardware platform, suitable software platform and associated tracking technique. Finally, to develop (5) demo MR model to demonstrate and validate the developed workflow and to understand the associated practical challenges like complexity of such mixed reality technologies and user familiarity. In order to achieve the purpose of this thesis, a six-step methodology was applied which includes: (1) system analysis, (2) use case analysis, (3) conceptualize, (4) computerize, (5) construct and (6) verify, validate and visualize. The case study started with system analysis which mainly deals with extracting the industrial needs and requirements. The system analysis includes two sub steps. First, is to perform a detailed systematic literature review (SLR) to understand the state of art in VR/AR/MR in the wind industry and other relevant industry. Second, an empirical exploration were the author attended a 5day GWO wind safety training at the Eigersund energy hub to personally experience and understand the training scenarios which will be crucial and beneficial to have a mixed reality application from both technician and company perspective. The use case analysis deals with the creation of the case context which includes selecting the critical training module based on accident data from literature review and to identify one similar framework in other engineering industry. The conceptualize step involves in classifying the selected critical module into training tasks and to identity the risk associated with each training tasks. It also involves in performing the concept study before building the MR model and to develop the scenario modelling chart. The computerize step involves in developing the actual 3D model and the demo MR model. The construct step involves the creation of the flowchart, worksheet, workflow and the framework and the sixth step is to validate and verify the research outputs. Consequently, as the result of the six-step methodology this thesis has provided new knowledge regarding four concepts: (1) sequence or workflow (2) the need for continuous and iterative process to design mixed reality (3) the logic and the rules for the selection of technical specifications (4) worksheet to classify the scenarios and to define training complexity. The thesis concludes that the safety training provider needs to rigorously follow the developed (1) mixed reality analysis (MRA) workflow, (2) mixed reality analysis (MRA) framework, (3) mixed reality technical specification (MRTS) flowchart and the (4) mixed reality technical specification (MRTS) worksheet. The MRA workflow provides the sequence that can enable the industrial practitioner to design MR application in a cost-effective and fit for purpose manner which includes screening out low risk scenarios. The MRA framework clearly indicates that the design to implement MR is an iterative process based on user needs and user level of familiarity. The MRTS flowchart provides the logic to identify the suitable type of technology for a particular scenario, along with the suitable hardware platform, suitable software platform and associated tracking technique. The MRTS flowchart must be used along with the MRTS worksheet which can help to identify the critical training modules/scenarios and further classify them to check if implementation of mixed realities is needed or not. In future, the complexity associated with such technologies must be studied after implementing in real-time. Based on the case study AR/VR should be designed to make work simpler and error free. However, in some cases if using the technology is creating unintended consequences and complexity, then the technology might not be used in such cases

    Adaptive tension, self-organization and emergence : A complex system perspective of supply chain disruptions

    The purpose of this thesis was to explore how microstate human interactions produce macro level self-organization and emergence in a supply disruption scenario, as well as discover factors and typical human behaviour that bring about disruptions. This study argues that the complex adaptive system’s view of complexity is most suited scholarly foundation for this research enquiry. Drawing on the dissipative structure based explanation of emergence and self-organization in a complex adaptive system, this thesis further argues that an energy gradient between the ongoing and designed system conditions, known as adaptive tension, causes supply chains to self-organize and emerge. This study adopts a critical realist ontology operationalized by a qualitative case research and grounded theory based analysis. The data was collected using repertory grid interviews of 22 supply chain executives from 21 firms. In all 167 cases of supply disruptions were investigated. Findings illustrate that agent behaviours like loss of trust, over ambitious pursuit, use of power and privilege, conspiring against best practices and heedless performance were contributing to disruption. Impacted by these behaviours, supply chains demonstrated impaired disruption management capabilities and increased disruption probability. It was also discovered that some of these system patterns and microstate agent behaviours pushed the supply chains to a zone of emergent complexity where these networks self-organized and emerged into new structures or embraced changes in prevailing processes or goals. A conceptual model was developed to explain the transition from micro agent behaviour to system level self-organization and emergence. The model described alternate pathways of a supply chain under adaptive tension. The research makes three primary research contributions. Firstly, based upon the theoretical model, this research presents a conceptualization of supply chain emergence and self-organization from dissipative structures and adaptive tension based view of complexity. Secondly, it formally introduces and validates the role of behavioural and cognitive element of human actions in a supply chain scenario. Lastly, it affirms the complex adaptive system based conceptualization of supply chain networks. These contributions succeed in providing organizations with an explanation for observed deviations in their operations performance using a behavioural aspect of human agents

    A Framework for Executable Systems Modeling

    Systems Modeling Language (SysML), like its parent language, the Unified Modeling Language (UML), consists of a number of independently derived model languages (i.e. state charts, activity models etc.) which have been co-opted into a single modeling framework. This, together with the lack of an overarching meta-model that supports uniform semantics across the various diagram types, has resulted in a large unwieldy and informal language schema. Additionally, SysML does not offer a built in framework for managing time and the scheduling of time based events in a simulation. In response to these challenges, a number of auxiliary standards have been offered by the Object Management Group (OMG); most pertinent here are the foundational UML subset (fUML), Action language for fUML (Alf), and the UML profile for Modeling and Analysis of Real Time and Embedded Systems (MARTE). However, there remains a lack of a similar treatment of SysML tailored towards precise and formal modeling in the systems engineering domain. This work addresses this gap by offering refined semantics for SysML akin to fUML and MARTE standards, aimed at primarily supporting the development of time based simulation models typically applied for model verification and validation in systems engineering. The result of this work offers an Executable Systems Modeling Language (ESysML) and a prototype modeling tool that serves as an implementation test bed for the ESysML language. Additionally a model development process is offered to guide user appropriation of the provided framework for model building

    The agency and geography of socio-technical transitions: the case of urban transport innovations

    The objective of this cumulative thesis is to gain deeper insights into the interplay of agency and structure through the empirical example of emerging technologies in the context of Industry 4.0. To achieve this goal, it enriches the theoretical background from evolutionary economic geography with insights from transition studies and management studies. Empirically, the analysis focuses on novelty creation toward intelligent transport systems in an urban environment. This encompasses software solutions such as big data platforms for traffic management, the Internet of Things to create a network of various objects and subjects within the city, or the development of autonomous vehicles. This thesis formulates four overarching research purposes: (1) comprehending socio-technical transitions during Industry 4.0 from an agency-based perspective; (2) understanding how agency facilitates or hinders innovation development; (3) identifying the impact of multi-scalar and cross-sectoral relations; and (4) integrating different theoretical approaches to gain a holistic understanding of the empirical domain. The thesis adopts a qualitative research design with a philosophical grounding in critical realism, drawing on semi-structured expert interviews, literature reviews, and document and network analysis. The main contribution of this thesis rests on four distinct research papers. A systematic literature review sets the conceptual basis for the analysis, identifying future research avenues based on the existing research body. The first case study analyzes the development of an app-based solution for managing urban logistics in Barcelona from a multi-level perspective. The other two case studies investigate the evolution of advanced air mobility in Germany and the city of Hamburg

    A systematic risk management model for construction project management: a case study of the new infrastructure project in the University of Mpumalanga

    The construction industry has become the significant player in the economy of many developed and developing countries in the world. The industry contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment rate of many nations. As such, the industry is the engine for the economic development and growth across the world. Recently, African countries have received global attention due to its calls for massive infrastructure development and maintenance thereof. Accordingly, the South African government has adopted a National Infrastructure Development Plan (NIDP), which seeks not only to transform the economic landscape of the country, but also to support the integration of the African economies through infrastructure development. To ensure that the execution of these infrastructure projects is successfully delivered in terms of time, cost, and scope; project risk management in the construction industry has become an important area of interest in the execution and delivery of the infrastructure projects. However, the constantly increasing complexity and dynamics in the delivery of construction projects have serious effects on the risk management processes during the execution of the project. In practice, risk methods and techniques have proven to be unrealistic when using the traditional risk management approach in the context of the complexity and dynamic environments wherein construction projects are delivered. Worryingly, project management practitioners in engineering and construction projects still lack the holistic and systematic insight and understanding of construction projects when applying the risk management procedures in the complex and dynamic projects environments. As a result, there are growing reports of unsatisfactory delivery of construction projects in terms of time, cost, quality, and environmental objectives. In this regard, the call for embracing the systems thinking paradigm as the alternative approach that will provide more clarity in dealing with the complex management challenges and which will gradually substitute the traditional theoretical approach of dealing with construction project management, is becoming prominent. Against this background, this study uses a multiple case study approach to explore how a systematic risk management approach could be developed and applied towards successful delivery of construction projects, and subsequently to propose a systematic risk management model that is designed to depict and grasp the underlying complexities and dynamics embedded ix | P a g e in construction projects. The choice of the case study design is founded on its utility and appropriateness for in-depth investigations into phenomena in its context as well as its usefulness for exploratory studies. Therefore, to explore the risk management phenomenon in real-life settings, the unit of analysis in this study was based on three construction projects built in one of the new Institutions of Higher Learning in South Africa during the period between 2017 and 2019. Notwithstanding the unique characteristics of these projects, the complexity and dynamic environments of these projects also emanated from the facts that i) the successful delivery of the projects was a predecessor activity to the academic schedule and activities; ii) this was one of the first universities to be built by the democratic Republic of South Africa; and, iii) the construction contract used for the delivery of the construction projects is relatively new to the professionals in the country’s construction industry. This qualitative case study design has its backbone in the constructivism philosophical paradigm which is underpinned by the ontology that there are multiple realities as conceptualized, experienced, and perceived by the people in their real-life situations or natural settings. Accordingly, the construction professionals, projects’ documents as well as field work observations were purposively chosen as the essential and reliable methods of data collection for this case study. For analysis, a conventional content data analysis methodology was applied on the empirical data that was obtained from the multiple data sources to provide a clearer understanding of the contexts in which the risk management for construction projects is performed. Accordingly, a qualitative data analysis software system called MAXQDA was used to enable the performance of data coding, managing coding, and eventually the retrieving of the coded segments in a form of visual models and summary tables. Ultimately, the qualitative content analysis approach in this thesis was performed in terms of a ‘critical filter of thick description’ which involved a balanced approach between the deductive analysis and the inductive analysis processes. With the assistance of the MAXQDA, performing the multiple levels coding and analysis processes in this thesis has not only been efficient, but also more reliable. To shed insight into the empirical findings of the study, a hybrid theoretical framework has been applied in the discussion and interpretation of the findings. The theoretical framework of this study is underpinned by the complexity theory and the theory of systems engineering. The applicability of these theories in this study is essential in providing a x | P a g e systematic and logical explanation of the practices of risk management in construction projects and further helps to explain why particular events occurred in the processes of risk management. Eventually, the theoretical framework has enabled the designing and developing of a systematic risk management model that will assist in depicting and grasping the underlying complexities while supporting proactive decision making in the delivery of construction projects. To this end, this study has made several major contributions in three multiple folds in the body of knowledge. Firstly, this study makes theoretical contributions by developing an empirically underpinned systematic risk management model which provide more clarity on comprehending the multifaceted and complex risk factors embedded in construction projects. Secondly, the qualitative case study approach and the associated analysis methods thereof in this thesis provides novelty and lays the groundwork for future research and methodological replicability in another similar phenomenon elsewhere in the world. Thirdly, this study has gone some way towards expanding the understanding and the basis for managerial decision making in relation to front-end planning and proactive approach for risk management, and eventually to improve projects’ performances on cost, time, scope, and environmental sustainability. In this regard, the key practical implication for project management practitioners is that the adoption and embracing of the systematic and holistic thinking approach in the risk management processes could enhance the successful delivery of construction projects. In the literature, there is paucity and need for more research into the exploration and analysis of the integration and interplay between the systems engineering and complexity perspectives and the other knowledge areas in the PMBOK. In conclusion, this thesis therefore argues that to address the deficiencies in risk management practices during construction projects’ delivery, the solution requires a paradigm shift from the traditional linear approach which, by design, overlooks the complexities, non-linearity and interdependences of the elements that are underpinning and characterizing the nature of the contemporary construction projects.     Guideline-based Decision Support in Medicine Modeling Guidelines for the Development and Application of Clinical Decision Support Systems The number and use of decision support systems that incorporate guidelines with the goal of improving care is rapidly increasing. Although developing systems that are both effective in supporting clinicians and accepted by them has proven to be a difficult task, of the systems that were evaluated by a controlled trial, the majority showed impact. The work, described in this thesis, aims at developing a methodology and framework that facilitates all stages in the guideline development process, ranging from the definition of models that represent guidelines to the implementation of run-time systems that provide decision support, based on the guidelines that were developed during the previous stages. The framework consists of 1) a guideline representation formalism that uses the concepts of primitives, Problem-Solving Methods (PSMs) and ontologies to represent guidelines of various complexity and granularity and different application domains, 2) a guideline authoring environment that enables guideline authors to define guidelines, based on the newly developed guideline representation formalism, and 3) a guideline execution environment that translates defined guidelines into a more efficient symbol-level representation, which can be read in and processed by an execution-time engine. The described methodology and framework were used to develop and validate a number of guidelines and decision support systems in various clinical domains such as Intensive Care, Family Practice, Psychiatry and the areas of Diabetes and Hypertension control
