    Principal water resources users were surveyed to determine the impact of remote data streams on hydrologic computer models. Analysis of responses demonstrated that: most water resources effort suitable to remote sensing inputs is conducted through federal agencies or through federally stimulated research; and, most hydrologic models suitable to remote sensing data are federally developed. Computer usage by major water resources users was analyzed to determine the trends of usage and costs for the principal hydrologic users/models. The laws and empirical relationships governing the growth of the data processing loads were described and applied to project the future data loads. Data loads for ERTS CCT image processing were computed and projected through the 1985 era

    Automatic differentiation in machine learning: a survey

    Derivatives, mostly in the form of gradients and Hessians, are ubiquitous in machine learning. Automatic differentiation (AD), also called algorithmic differentiation or simply "autodiff", is a family of techniques similar to but more general than backpropagation for efficiently and accurately evaluating derivatives of numeric functions expressed as computer programs. AD is a small but established field with applications in areas including computational fluid dynamics, atmospheric sciences, and engineering design optimization. Until very recently, the fields of machine learning and AD have largely been unaware of each other and, in some cases, have independently discovered each other's results. Despite its relevance, general-purpose AD has been missing from the machine learning toolbox, a situation slowly changing with its ongoing adoption under the names "dynamic computational graphs" and "differentiable programming". We survey the intersection of AD and machine learning, cover applications where AD has direct relevance, and address the main implementation techniques. By precisely defining the main differentiation techniques and their interrelationships, we aim to bring clarity to the usage of the terms "autodiff", "automatic differentiation", and "symbolic differentiation" as these are encountered more and more in machine learning settings.Comment: 43 pages, 5 figure

    Generating rewritable abstract syntax trees - A foundation for the rapid development of source code transformation tools

    Abstract. Building a production-quality refactoring engine or similar source code transformation tool traditionally requires a large amount of hand-written, language-specific support code. We describe a system which reduces this overhead by allowing both a parser and a fully rewritable AST to be generated automatically from an annotated grammar, requiring little or no additional handwritten code. The rewritable AST is ideal for implementing program transformations that preserve the formatting of the original sources, including spacing and comments, and the system can be augmented to allow transformation of Cpreprocessed sources even when the target language is not C or C++. Moreover, the AST design is fully customizable, allowing it to resemble a hand-coded tree. The amount of required annotation is typically quite small, and the annotated grammar is often an order of magnitude smaller than the generated code

    Geometric data transfer between CAD systems: solid models

    The CAD/CAM community is showing great interest in the development of data exchange standards. This article highlights some aspects of the work accomplished during the first phase of the ESPRIT project CAD*1. Part of this work has resulted in a specification for the exchange of solid models, as well as in some pilot implementations of processors based on this specification. This work also contributes to the efforts of the International Standards Organization (ISO) in developing the Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP). The authors present a summary of the CAD*1 approach, addressing the structure of neutral files for solids, entities, and attributes supporting three kinds of representations, facilities for the transfer of parametric designs, referencing library components, and other general mechanisms. Also is described the current state of the specification and processor implementations. An example of a CAD*1 neutral file is included. Results from cycle and intersystem solid model transfer tests are presented, showing the practicality of the CAD*1 proposal. B-rep model transfer results are discussed in some detail.
