Online learning of physics during a pandemic: A report from an academic experience in Italy
The arrival of the Sars-Cov II has opened a new window on teaching physics in academia.
Frontal lectures have left space for online teaching, teachers have been faced with a new way
of spreading knowledge, adapting contents and modalities of their courses. Students have
faced up with a new way of learning physics, which relies on free access to materials and
their informatics knowledge. We decided to investigate how online didactics has influenced
students’ assessments, motivation, and satisfaction in learning physics during the pandemic
in 2020. The research has involved bachelor (n = 53) and master (n = 27) students of
the Physics Department at the University of Cagliari (N = 80, 47 male; 33 female). The
MANOVA supported significant mean differences about gender and university level with
higher values for girls and master students in almost all variables investigated. The path
analysis showed that student-student, student-teacher interaction, and the organization of
the courses significantly influenced satisfaction and motivation in learning physics. The
results of this study can be used to improve the standards of teaching in physics at the
University of Cagliar
Wide-Field InfrarRed Survey Telescope-Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets WFIRST-AFTA 2015 Report
This report describes the 2014 study by the Science Definition Team (SDT) of
the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) mission. It is a space
observatory that will address the most compelling scientific problems in dark
energy, exoplanets and general astrophysics using a 2.4-m telescope with a
wide-field infrared instrument and an optical coronagraph. The Astro2010
Decadal Survey recommended a Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope as its top
priority for a new large space mission. As conceived by the decadal survey,
WFIRST would carry out a dark energy science program, a microlensing program to
determine the demographics of exoplanets, and a general observing program
utilizing its ultra wide field. In October 2012, NASA chartered a Science
Definition Team (SDT) to produce, in collaboration with the WFIRST Study Office
at GSFC and the Program Office at JPL, a Design Reference Mission (DRM) for an
implementation of WFIRST using one of the 2.4-m, Hubble-quality telescope
assemblies recently made available to NASA. This DRM builds on the work of the
earlier WFIRST SDT, reported by Green et al. (2012) and the previous WFIRST-2.4
DRM, reported by Spergel et. (2013). The 2.4-m primary mirror enables a mission
with greater sensitivity and higher angular resolution than the 1.3-m and 1.1-m
designs considered previously, increasing both the science return of the
primary surveys and the capabilities of WFIRST as a Guest Observer facility.
The addition of an on-axis coronagraphic instrument to the baseline design
enables imaging and spectroscopic studies of planets around nearby stars.Comment: This report describes the 2014 study by the Science Definition Team

Engineering for a changing world: 60th Ilmenau Scientific Colloquium, Technische Universität Ilmenau, September 04-08, 2023 : programme
In 2023, the Ilmenau Scientific Colloquium is once more organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The service is tailored to individual users’ requirements to ensure that researchers can focus effort on their science, rather than struggling with correct use of unfamiliar satellite data
Satellite monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs) to protect the aquaculture industry
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can cause sudden and considerable losses to fish farms, for example 500,000 salmon during one bloom in Shetland, and also present a threat to human health. Early warning allows the industry to take protective measures. PML's satellite monitoring of HABs is now funded by the Scottish aquaculture industry. The service involves processing EO ocean colour data from NASA and ESA in near-real time, and applying novel techniques for discriminating certain harmful blooms from harmless algae. Within the AQUA-USERS project we are extending this capability to further HAB species within several European countries
