Peeking Out from Behind the Curtain
Absconded by airport security to middle-of-nowhere Russia, Nikolai Alexeyev sat for several days in early September 2010 unaware of his infractions or of his fate. Like a page from a Cold-War spy novel, the point of his abduction was to terrorize; Alexeyev’s abductors psychologically tortured and berated him with homophobic remarks. Nikolai Alexeyev is the leading gay rights activist in Russia and has been a twisting thorn in the side of local and national government for several years. Upon his release, he resolved to agitate further by leading a public demonstration to boycott the Swiss International Air Lines for its involvement in his kidnapping. On October 4, 2010, protestors rallied in the streets of Moscow to support Alexeyev when no recourse was taken against his kidnappers and, essentially, to exercise newfound rights. Although members of the media nearly equaled the number of protesters, the rally symbolized progress—a distinct break from the way things were. This particular rally was the first government-sanctioned demonstration by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in the Russian capital (The Moscow Times, 2010)

Solving the kilo-second QPO problem of the intermediate polar GK Persei
We detect the likely optical counterpart to previously reported X-ray QPOs in
spectrophotometry of the intermediate polar GK Persei during the 1996 dwarf
nova outburst. The characteristic timescales range between 4000--6000 s.
Although the QPOs are an order of magnitude longer than those detected in the
other dwarf novae we show that a new QPO model is not required to explain the
long timescale observed. We demonstrate that the observations are consistent
with oscillations being the result of normal-timescale QPOs beating with the
spin period of the white dwarf. We determine the spectral class of the
companion to be consistent with its quiescent classification and find no
significant evidence for irradiation over its inner face. We detect the white
dwarf spin period in line fluxes, V/R ratios and Doppler-broadened emission

Neutral networks of genotypes: Evolution behind the curtain
Our understanding of the evolutionary process has gone a long way since the
publication, 150 years ago, of "On the origin of species" by Charles R. Darwin.
The XXth Century witnessed great efforts to embrace replication, mutation, and
selection within the framework of a formal theory, able eventually to predict
the dynamics and fate of evolving populations. However, a large body of
empirical evidence collected over the last decades strongly suggests that some
of the assumptions of those classical models necessitate a deep revision. The
viability of organisms is not dependent on a unique and optimal genotype. The
discovery of huge sets of genotypes (or neutral networks) yielding the same
phenotype --in the last term the same organism--, reveals that, most likely,
very different functional solutions can be found, accessed and fixed in a
population through a low-cost exploration of the space of genomes. The
'evolution behind the curtain' may be the answer to some of the current puzzles
that evolutionary theory faces, like the fast speciation process that is

Strange Loops: Apparent versus Actual Human Involvement in Automated Decision-Making
The era of AI-based decision-making fast approaches, and anxiety is mounting about when, and why, we should keep “humans in the loop” (“HITL”). Thus far, commentary has focused primarily on two questions: whether, and when, keeping humans involved will improve the results of decision-making (making them safer or more accurate), and whether, and when, non-accuracy-related values—legitimacy, dignity, and so forth—are vindicated by the inclusion of humans in decision-making. Here, we take up a related but distinct question, which has eluded the scholarship thus far: does it matter if humans appear to be in the loop of decision-making, independent from whether they actually are? In other words, what is stake in the disjunction between whether humans in fact have ultimate authority over decision-making versus whether humans merely seem, from the outside, to have such authority?
Our argument proceeds in four parts. First, we build our formal model, enriching the HITL question to include not only whether humans are actually in the loop of decision-making, but also whether they appear to be so. Second, we describe situations in which the actuality and appearance of HITL align: those that seem to involve human judgment and actually do, and those that seem automated and actually are. Third, we explore instances of misalignment: situations in which systems that seem to involve human judgment actually do not, and situations in which systems that hold themselves out as automated actually rely on humans operating “behind the curtain.” Fourth, we examine the normative issues that result from HITL misalignment, arguing that it challenges individual decision-making about automated systems and complicates collective governance of automation
